I asked santa so nicely back in 2019 (according to this thread) for a paypal donation button on the home page, but I guess I was naughty that year, 'cause it didn't happen. I've been better (?) this year, and I did just send a paypal your way, but gosh darn it would be so much easier if santa would check his list twice (and maybe send out a yearly reminder that he was compiling his naughty list)..
Thanks for everyone's support.

We need to keep this thread alive! Right now, you have to PM to ask for the email address for paypal, or the postal address for checks.. I couldn't send much, but did send a bit.
If you donate, post to keep this thread up top! He's not asking, so it's up to us.
Heck- just cut and paste the above...!

Egads has it really been that long? :o( Sorry Lenny, it's been a few rough years
Let's keep this site going folks!!!
Thank you Sir! Site has pretty much been on autopilot but lately the russian hackers have been trying hard to get in and I have been busy in the background trying to keep the site up. I think everyone has been hit hard the last few years $$ wise, but I will always do my best to keep the site up and running, even though it seems FB has taken over and replaced most forums these days.

OK. I can see the forward sweep. The difference is obvious when you see them side by side. I was thinking about using a third party landing gear eventually but now I know not to do any work on these.
Thanks!

yep, it's a tricycle gear. With your gear, you see the wheel is centered between the upper mounting points. The taildragger gear has the wheel slightly ahead of the front attachment point. Notice this picture. JImChuk
-
You have tricycle gear in the TW position. Tailwheel gear has longer legs and is swept forward.
-
Jim will eventually respond and in all likely hood say it is a tricycle landing gear. when you first posted pictures of the project someone was pointing this out.
-
So I am finally getting started on my Avid kit. Someone already mentioned that it doesn't look like I have the correct front gear for a tailwheel setup. The manual say that the gear for tailwheel is longer than that for a tricycle, but it does not say by how much. What I have measures at 20". I was likely going to use something besides the stock gear anyway. Can anyone help with this first mystery?

The edges on my box were 1) highly irregular and 2) too tall, pressing down on the frame and up on the seat pan. So, I cut them off, and glued with safety wire the pan to the frame. I also didn't like the way it would have cut into the formed seat "truss" on the botton of the pan, so made the access door smaller than the box to avoid the truss. I split foam tubing for the seat-to-box edge interface- no pics of that.
-
Went with a step, but didn't like the idea of stressing the gear leg too much. ordered some 1" ID tubing, split that, then welded a bar support to those, and pop-riveted those to the gear legs.
Am about to cover the gear- this was one of those "stopping places" - need to get the fuse up on gear. Welds aren't pretty (one reason I didn't want to mess with the gear legs directly). The inserts are rivnuts.
Onward.

This is barely a technical task, but I thought that it was necessary. As I am sorting through all of the parts that came with the plane that I just bought I wanted to put the wings in a safer place. This is a simple design from an old EAA article. I followed it pretty closely. I bough new casters instead of the recommended salvaged roller skate wheels. The only problem that I ran into is that my CAD 2x4's are a lot straighter than what you can get from Home Depot.

It was a long drive this weekend, but I was able to bring my Avid home. There is quite a bit to go through and to figure out what I have and do not have. There are two boxes of documentation to sort out first.
But I just wanted to share the beginning of the journey finishing this plane.

Jabiru, Australia has a good supply of parts. I just bought new barrels for my A Series 2200.
I run Rotec water-cooled heads which I love but it does require fitting pumps and a radiator which is a big job.
Were I to do it all again I would purchase a brand new Jabiru as they have alloy barrels that cure many ills and the price is amazing compared to a Rotax.

If it's a sling seat, it should fit. I was measuring a Kitfox seat and Avid fiberglass seats recently, and it seemed like the back part of the Kitfox was 1" longer. I do have a spare Kitfox fiberglass seat from a Kitfox 2. Depending on what motor you were using in the Kitfox, the Avid cowl may work. 582 is spark plugs up in a Kitfox and inverted in the Avid, so for that the Kitfox cowl is a lot taller. With a 912 though, it would be a lot closer. I was actually going to use an Avid cowl on my Kitfox 4 with 912 build. I have since sourced a Kitfox smooth cowl and will go with it. If you meant elevator and horizontal stabilizer, it could probably be made to work with some modification, the MK IV elevator had a built in trim tab and I seem to remember the elevator is larger than earlier Avids. This is my Kitfox 4 with Avid MK IV cowl. It looks short because I have a modified longer motor mount. The standard Kitfox 4 912 mount puts the engine about 4" further back. JImChuk

Could anybody tell me if the following Avid parts would suit a Kitfox fuselage?
- elevator and vertical stab
- seats
- engine cowling
without too complex modifications!
