Similar to my idea, only different.

Here is the back side. I took a 1/4 nylon piece, mounted and measured the degrees of deflection and marked the centers. I removed and then I used a Dremel to make the grooves. Works very well and holds up to vibration so it doesn't slip.

I sure like your detent set up for flaps. Would you have any more pics of the back side mounting? Did you create this by hand (lots of filing and sanding) or machine? Thanks. B

Nice sheet metal work Larry. I'm looking forward to more updates on this one.

What thickness of Plexiglass, or Lexan was yours made of ? I always knew that the upper bearing would have to be added, the turtle deck that I have does not have an upper bearing, I hope it was never flown without the bearing

I have the old style vented cap on mine.  When I was trying to balance the prop I replaced it with a threaded plug modified to mount an accelerometer.  With the plugged vent, it did leak some oil out the rear seal.  I've had no leakage after returning to the vented cap.

Just checking, but you're only filling the gear oil to the lower of the two witness holes, correct?  When filled correctly the gearbox only is about 1/4 to 1/3 full of oil.

Mine was bent up using a break. You need a way to properly build the upper bearing into it for the flaperon linkage as well. I use a set of machine screws and washers on either side of where the rod comes out. Takes a few extra minutes to remove the turtle deck but I don't fold my wings so not a big deal.

  8. herman pahls added a post in a topic Looking for information on Kitfox wheel hubs

I did what FoxDB suggested and agree with modifying off the shelf products versus starting from scratch unless using the lathe is the motive.
I needed more powerful brakes for 29" bushwheels than the original Kitfox brakes had to offer.
I took the Matco A3A axles which are 1-1/4" OD and drilled them out with a 3/4" drill bit on a lathe.
Then slid the bored out axles over the 3/4" Kitfox axle (this axle does not have a flange for the caliper bracket)  and welded the Matco supplied plate to the gear leg.
I did the welding with the gear leg still attached to the airframe and it only took minutes to do.
The 3/4 axles are still supporting the weight of the airplane and the welded on plates serve as anti rotation and a place to bolt the bored out axle and caliper bracket to.
I also fly a model 2 that has the Kitfox supplied brakes where the caliper bolts to the wheel.
Removing that wheel requires unbolting the caliper from the wheel and removing the bearing adjustment nut to remove the wheel and hub.
These wheels are not readily available since they require the welded on lugs to bolt the caliper to.
My model 4 has been converted to newer style Matco brakes where the rotor is bolted to the hub.
Removing that wheel only requires removing 3 nuts and does not involve the brakes or bearings.
Matco wheels are readily available in several diameters and I use the 6" wheels for Bushwheels and the 8" for the Nanco's and only takes minutes to change depending on the mission.
This is the same brake system that is used on the Just Highlanders.

    C box air vent
On my 582's I have never used the C box air vent and have never noticed an issue. For whatever reasons possessed me I added the air vent to my C box and it seems to throw a lot of oil out. I was very careful not to over fill but throws just the same. What are your opinions, keep it and keep filling back up or get rid of it?

Kitfox sells an antenna mount that goes just behind where the turtledeck ends.  I have one, but you could make your own.

In my avid there is a antenna tab right at the lower end of the turttle deck opening, in the middle, I place my antenna there and I have no problem at all, even when I fold the wings...

Looks nice, but then I'd need to find a new place for my antennas. I'll stick with aluminum for now.

Okay.  It's cooling off, winter's coming again and the flying weather is questionable.  Back to work on the Mangy Fox!

My accomplishment for today is a new firewall.  The original firewall was, first off, a mess.  It looked terrible and was so full of holes, it should have been called a fire screen.  Second, since I reworked the rudder peddles into something functional, they wouldn't fit in the footwells.  So a new one was definitely in order.

Yep, Lexan (or polycarbonate) sheet can easily be cold formed in a press brake. Plexiglass (or acrylic) sheet needs to be heated.before it will form.

Lexan is somewhat softer than plexiglass so it will scratch more easily. It can also be drilled without the tendency to crack like plexiglass.

Lexan is not resistant to gas and will craze if gas is spilled on it. I discovered that when I used it for a windshield on my pre-war Aeronca.

Dave everyone that I have talked to who have done it said it wasn't worth the time. With the false ribs on the avid HH wing it creates small dips in the fabric that almost act as a VG. I've had the stol speed ones in my hangar for 2 years I've just never gotten around to installing them.

Thanks for the report Joey. It's fun to hear stories from you guys that have flying planes. Helps with the motivation.

I've bent Lexan (polycarbonate) in our metal brake. Here's a video of a guy mending a piece:

On our regular sized brake, you can bend 90 degrees in one bend. I was bending fairly thin stuff though. Probably about 1/16". Not sure how it would work on thicker material.
