I hope you are planning to use some fire-protection material over the aluminum that the FAA will approve. Standard is .016 stainless or .018 galvanized, and the FARs give that minimum thickness to withstand the only approved fire test.

Thanks Paul - Anything helpful = I thought from the photos that yours was a nose-dragger. I have bought several builders manuals for KF and Avid, but yet have no drawings or photos of frame attaches or nose gear pictures or any info on construction, materials, etc. I have my own designed, see my latest post on page 3 of
C-Box ratios where I wrote to Randy. Always like to see what others have done, and maybe make changes to my design to make it better, if that is possible.
Whatever, whenever, you can post something it will be appreciated - or anyone else that has info on nose gear.

Ed mine is a taildragger but the MK IV was build so that it could be either one. If you are wanting pictures of the frame structure I can take some but it will be a couple of days before I have a chance to get back to the hanger.

Many Thanks for all the info Randy,
Mine is going back to welder the first of May for "final"(?) mods. I used a scrap MDX bike frame (don't laugh too loudly please) that can be bought at Walmart for about $100 to make my nose gear, attaching it to a fork salvaged from a PA-22 Piper Tripacer and making it castoring with a six inch wheel and 600 tire. OF Course, the three inch wing LE extensions have to be designed and made, all of the flaps and ailerons made, along with the hook-ups.
guess I am about 30 percent with 90 percent to go??? Hopefully will be in paint this year. Only been on this project for 16 years,
so very near completion, and ready to try it out. Will let the world know with photos and stats when I finally get there!!

Yup, i'm up poop creek for using a vw and a redrive. After looking into it more you're right. It would be at least 200# and probably more. That's Subaru territory at that point and a lot of weight on the nose.

As much as I wish for a 4 stroke, there looks like nothing is going to come close to the old 582 for HP/thrust for anywhere near the same weight.

I guess i'll keep on truckin with the 582 and saving till the right engine comes up for sale. Thanks for saving me a pile of work, cash and a headache.

If you read the Kitfox Histories, you will see that the early ones did not have enough tailfeathers. I believe the same is true for the Avids. As models progressed, the tails kept getting larger. I had a notebook filled with tail calculations until my mind went to mush! He was correct in enlarging the tail - A LOT! Mine was enlarged - a lot. I could furnish the formula from Darrol Stintons Book, The Design of the Aeroplane, the best design book I have ever read, but then you might get the room ahead of me in the "Designers Mental Ward"!!! Best thing is to just go with the measurements for the later models, and go flying.
The Rans is a nice airplane - most comfortable seats I have sat in.

I installed the certified aircraft style primer tonight and it worked great immediately.
I did not have to pump it a number of times to prime it like I did with the Rotax plunger type.
Attaching the 1/8 inch prime tubing is not as simple as it is with the barbed fittings on the Rotax primer.

mine is SN 581 Model C ordered with heavy hauler wings from the factory. The paperwork I have from the dealer order says 1085# gross. This is the only place I have seen that number. Not sure how accurate it is, but I do know that it was ordered as a HH.

Unless your making your own mount and cowl, I was told the VW with redrive woun't fit inside due to moving the thrust line.

15 hp of gain against weihgt, building issues and money, may be sell the avid + money for 912 equals good used 2 seater 912 ultralight plane.

Yeah that is what I thought.

You guys are running the tires at max or a bit over with the confidence that they will work reliabily because they are designed for rough off road use. Makes sense to me if I still had my MKIV and it's 1150 gross, but I think my Magnum would be pushing the envelope just a bit too far at 1750 gross.

At gross my Magnum has about 800 Lb on each main tire and probably 150 on the tailwheel. A bit too much for me.

Oh well, they do look like a GREAT option for planes that gross in the 1000 Lb range!

Avid C with stol wings and Rotax 912
Last year I bought an Avid C model with stol wings and Rotax 912 engine. I bought the plane in Germany and took it by road home to Denmark, where I live. My plan is to build new Heavy Hauler wings for it. Howewer: I have run into some problems with the local authorities. They claim that my planes serialnumber: 468 is to low for the plane to be fittet with Heavy Haulers. I have never heard of this before. If this in untrue, I need some good arguments, or preferably, some kind of documentation that can convince them to let me go ahead with the project.

I will really appreciate if you guys can help me with this.

Herman that's a pretty big can o worms but obviously it can be done. I'm assuming you've already contacted that guy on the other forum who has Dan Denney's original Mod 1 with a 912 on it? I looked at it during the Factory Fly-in. Besides that funny looking stick with a wheel on the end of it that he put on the front it was a nice looking airplane.

I have an almost complete MKIV kit that someday I want to stretch the fuse and put a 912 on it. I think one of these earlier models with a STOL wing would be amazing with the 912UL on it.

My airplane went from 484lbs with a 532 according to the original W&B to 535. I think the A&P that did my wings went waayyy overkill on the silver probably adding some unnecessary weight. 85% of the time I am light and out dinking around but during the other 15% of the time when I'm at gross flying to Idaho with a guy in a 100HP Rans who literally flies circles around me the extra HP would sure be nice!

Ok i'm back on the VW topic. I thought i'd find a cheap 912 by now but that's not the case.

Has anyone or does anyone know of someone running the vw with a reduction drive. From my research (web browsing) it seems like the vw won't give a great amount of thrust unless a reduction drive is used.
I'm sure this will increase the weight to the 170-180 installed weight. Making it 80 lbs heavier up front than the 582 thats on it now.

I've decided to hold on to the Avid for a while and fly the heck out of it cause working on the other plane project has me ever looking skywards. I fly almost exclusively by myself and am kicking my butt for not putting in a second wing tank when i recovered the one wing. I live in the Alberta prairies so no worries about needing to out climb a mountain...yet. Less fuel burn and more range along with a 4 stroke so i can go touring around more than 40 miles away from home would be nice.

So i know i'm probably headed down the path others have taken then switched but i'm most likely going to try it. I'm thinking a roughly 70 hp vw with redrive and the battery in the far back for W&B.

I know some of you swear by the 582 but alas i'm not a 2 stroke person and most likely never will be. To those of you who are, i tip my hat.

    Weight gain
Airplanes are like most humans; they gain weight with age.
I was shocked by how much weight my Model 1 gained in 17 years from the original 532 with single ignition and A-box.
Just a few pounds here and there.
582 with dual ignition, C-box, RK clutch, IFA prop,HACman mixture control, cabin heater and ducting, Odyssey battery left over from the Jabiru, bigger battery cables as need for the Jabiru, bigger tailwheel, matco brakes versus the original go kart brakes, radios and antennas, fuel flow meter, EIS, tools and a few spare parts, bigger than original tires and I am going bigger yet, 3/4 to 1 inch lift struts, plastic lift strut fairings, water logging?,
What started out as a marginal 2 seater due to 950# gross weight and my 200#'s has turned into a single seater unless my wife fly's with me which she doesnt very often.
    I am considering going to a 80 HP 912.
I have seen posts that say the 912 will only add 35 pounds over a 582.
    Is that realistic?
Besides getting the battery moved aft for weight and balance it seems like one builder installed larger tail feathers on his shorter fuselage Kitfox with a 912.
Opinions, facts and ideas would be appreciated .
    Thanks Herman

    MAP - A Non-education
SORRY TO SAY: My AMT books and courses at University of Alaska, did not provide any helpful education for flying with the MAP gauge.
This was a mechanics course, and not intended to make us pilots.
The info gathered so far, is that, "The throttle has to be advanced before the pitch is increased.", and "The pitch must be decreased before the throttle is retarded." "MAP and EGT are used to monitor engine power and fuel use." (but did not say "how")
Guess this all means, "Don't Lug the engine"?
Sorry I can't provide more meaningful info. Maybe the round-engine pilots know more about this than us auto-drivers?

500# ATV with a fat boy riding it.. There is always a good fudge factor tossed in there. I have flown mine at um... max + with extreme prejudice and they have been just fine at 8 PSI.
