He doesn't feel comfortable anymore being PIC. Feeling old perhaps.
Yet another reason I want to start building NOW and not when I'm half dead!

Oh - you're right about it being a one-off.  I asked John if he were to build another one, how he would go about it.  He said he couldn't - Brett McKinney has the jigs and tooling, and John  doesn't have plans.

    New Fat Avid owner
    Good Day All:
I figure it is time to surface on this forum.
I am Jim Rainbow and have just purchased an Avid Plus project from a Barnstormers ad.

    Some info about me:
I reside in Uxbridge Ontario Canada (about 50 Kilometres or 30 miles NE of Toronto)
I am currently in the process of getting my license and have about 20 hours of lessons behind me and am loving the sport, as I knew I would.
As well as me taking lessons so are my 2 sons and soon to be Son In Law in a Challenger 2 I purchased 3 years ago which needed about 18 months worth of repairs before I could fly it.
Did a lot of work to it including repainting the fuselage after some hefty fabric repairs due to the local squirrel population taking up residence int the fuse and wings.
The Challenger is rated as Basic Ultralight in Canada which places some restrictions on its operation which I am not prepared to live with once I have my license,
The Avid is the next step for me having been approved by Transport Canada to be imported to Canada as aircraft parts and registered as a "new" amateur built aircraft, which allows me to fly without helmets and carry passengers, it also allows me to fly into the US (Oshkosh here I come !!!)
My plan is to have the Avid finished in 1 1/2 to 2 years. Which is coincidentally when I will have no further use for the Challenger as I believe by the end of this summer (2014) we will all be licensed, I then want to install the Amphibian Floats on the Challenger over the winter of 2014 /2015 and get some training for all of us on water before getting rid of the Challenger and start flying the Avid.
In my head this schedule seems to work.

Enough about me and now about the project.

    I have purchased the following:
Airdale Fuselage (This is the fuselage owned originally by Mark Schindler a current member listed in the builders list)
Avid Mark IV Wings, Horizontal Stab and Elevator from a previously flown MK IV with Heavy Hauler Wings
Grove Landing Gear with Matco Brakes
A Large Roll of Dacron purchased by Mark S
The project is going to require a complete recover and paint (which I am really looking forward to as I love spray painting as a hobby), the fitting of the wings, and Horizontal Stab and Elevator to the new fuse along with all the other things I will have to do once our inspection agency sees it.
    (See Pictures Below)
Anyway, I am sure I am going to get lots of use from this forum and look forward to sharing the journey from what I have to what I see flying in my minds eye.
My plan is to update my progress via a photo journal of sorts.
Hope to interact with you all soon
PS I DO play banjo .... don't hold it against me.

The plane had a significant amount of next-level engineering, I really like the cabin structural improvements and foot wells. For better or worse, the new owner will definitely have a one-off plane with an interesting heritage. Did John mention why he decided to sell?

It does look goofy with the tiny wheels/tires. Funny too, after looking at a whole lot of Avids over the years, the only two with a RV style stinger tail spring I've ever seen show up within a month of each other. I get the benefits on a short-coupled taildragger but can't imagine that would hold up to the abuse Avid owners who stray off pavement can inflict. Anyhoo... looks like a stretched fuse, long spar Avid speed wing or possibly Kitfox Riblett wing. Count the ribs and look at the fabric over the wing tank. Top of tank is real smooth, looks more like a KF slip-in tank than Avid F/G wrap tank... although the flaperon counterbalance weights are round Avid style, not the square KF style. Maybe right in keeping with a 'use-what-ya-got-on-the-shelf', Frankenstein-like mentality. Interesting brake pedal mods, seems like they would exacerbate the poor ankle geometry problem rather than improve it. One thing for sure, that panel is a hot mess IMHO...

WANTED: 72" prop for soob belt reduction pusher
My Dad is building a Soob powered hovercraft this winter . It will have a belt drive reduction so prop is spinning the same as the engine in a pusher configuration. He asked me to keep my ears open for a 72" prop for it. He has a couple of Ivo hubs if anyone has some blades laying around.

Good visibility, light weight, and I bet it flys great, v.gs etc. I still have the 90 percent to go on my Avid IV.

    Wanted: transponder
Does anyone have a transponder that they could let go of? I'm looking at purchasing an aircraft but I live under the dang mode-C veil of the local class Bravo ring and will have to install one to be legal.

Obviously I would prefer something small and inexpensive, I would say cheap, but I don't want junk either!

I talked to John today and got more information on the plane. I'm waiting on pictures and a few more answers to questions I have about it but looks fairly promising.

    Superflite Instruction Manual Mistake!!!
    To All Beware!

I bought a partially built avid Magnum that already had the fuselage and control surfaces covered with Superflite. So I put a lot of work into the wings to get them ready for covering. I bought Superflite's instruction manual and DVD and read and watched them several times. I called Superflite and asked some final questions and asked them for any advice. They told me to start on something small, but I only had a wing to start on.
The manual, on page 5.3, says to mix 2 parts U-500 (Glue) and 1 part MEK. The DVD shows the graphic from the book with 2 parts U-500 and 1 part MEK, HOWEVER the narrator says "2 parts MEK to 1 part U-500" THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE!
I figured the narrator misspoke and I was wrong! It is misprinted in the book and in the graphic on the DVD.
Of course I figured this out after covering my wing with the wrong mixture. It resulted in me covering the top of my wing with fabric only to find some unsightly and uncorrectable glue under the fabric.
So, I had to undo all of my fabric and glue work. I had to use MEK to scrub all of the glue off of my wing. It took two days and I have to re-paint some of the wing.

Here is the most outrageous part...I'm still steaming over this!
I searched the internet to see if I was the first to discover this. On another forum for Rans and super cubs I found that this mistake has been in the manual since at least 2009! Many people have done the same thing I did.
I called Superflite and they directed me to a friendly fella named Randy, their technical help. I told him the story and he had heard it before, he asked me if I had the new manual and I said yes. He said that he was sorry, and had no control over what the main office does, but he was surprised they had reprinted the same, known, mistake!
I called the main office and told them about the mistake and they basically said "oh yah, that is wrong..." There was no offer to make things right by reimbursing me for the glue or fabric.
To be fair, I didn't push reimbursement, I intend to write them a letter. I just wanted to move on!

Why don't they add a piece of paper to their book with changes? Or have a warning on their website? Or for heaven's sake, tell me when I call and ask for first time advice?

So for anyone reading this...you should use a mixture of "2 parts MEK to 1 part U-500". Randy said that mix is a ball park starting point, but you don't want the glue to be too thick, so add more MEK the longer you work with it because the MEK is evaporating. If you make my mistake, the glue will be too thick and you will have to remove it...not fun!

I'm sure they have a good product, but I'm having a rough start!

    Thanks,
    Ron

You're right Ed, the axel is for a grove gear.  I think they are available from Grove for about $75 each.  When I put Kitfox hubs on my first MK IV, (stock tube gear) I had to take out the Avid 3/4" diameter axels, and put in slightly longer 3/4" ones.  Jim Chuk

PS  Leni,  there was some question about whether you or your brother John was going to use  them, but I'm sure I sent them to you.  It might have been 5 or 6 years ago now.

    Thanks Rod,
Looks like the rear spar is at same height in both, so tops should be OK - just bottom profile different - don't see why it wouldn't work - just look different on bottom.  Ribs on each side of tank could be built up to match profile.

    Thanks Leni,
What is the size for a 30" airstreak - My 8.50 x 6 airstreaks are not that big, but they are heavy!
         Lostman,
That axle looks like a Grove, and is made to fit the Spring Gear, and the holes are different than the original  Kitfox tubing gear - Most of the kits just had a plain tube for the axle, but I have one set with a solid bar.
Grove makes axles in several different bolt patterns.
