    Matco vs Maule
I know everybody with a Matco won't go back to Maule. Right? I went out tonight and did some high speed taxi practice on a friends pasture strip. Pretty rough. I run the maule with the lock/release cam removed. That helped a lot when things are not going straight. Anybody notice huge handling improvement going to the Matco? I'm carrying extra weight for my soob up front. Had to really get beefy with the springs to take the lickin. Double spring, extra heavy duty.

The spring is nothing to special. A piece of old trailer spring cut to the right length. Use the hole where the center bolt went through. A good bit and slow drilling speed will drill through spring steel. Use a grinder to shape the sides where it fits into the saddle. Probably take an hour for everything if you have a basic workshop. Why not just leave the tailwheel on?

That's why Alaska is so much fun!   Seems like every little Podunk airport down here has 2 guys in suits and ties doing ramp checks!   I think I have figured it out tho - If you land on the small strips that have an X on them, then there are no suits and ties waiting!
I thought it was very nice for someone to mark these strips - Guess it took too much paint to put 'No Ramp Checks' on the runway, so they just used an X.....

I guess I should read before I post.  like a lot of things that are common practice up here, we do shit that may not quite be to the letter of the law... I never heard of anyone here getting hit for having too much gas in the tank.  I have even seen them with tear drop tanks on the sides in addition to the 8 gallon seat tank

If you just want one for running radios, this thing is under a pound.  Its going to be hard to beat something like this for the money and weight!

I just picked up my EarthX battery at the show yesterday and learned a few more things about it.  It is the L I FE (Lithium Iron Oxide) like Leni said and is a lot more stable than other lithium types.  It has the built in circuitry that keeps the battery cells all balanced continually while charging (from the alternator or any charger).  It also cuts off the charge if it goes over 16 volts and automatically kicks back in when the charge drops to under 16 volt so it protects the battery.  If the battery does somehow get severe over voltage it "plumps" it rather than causing a nuclear meltdown and fire.  Plumping it just causes the plates to separate and the battery goes dead.  One additional feature of the EarthX is that the cases are made of a flameproof plastic material so they don't burn.  You cannot connect them in parallel with lead batteries though since the lead batteries are normally charged at 12.5 volts and the EarthX are normally charged at 14.5 volts. the lead battery will run the EarthX battery down when they are connected together.

The battery is a true 3.5 lbs plus has been performed very well in snowmachines for years, supposed to work fine at -30.  The PC680 has 520 peak cranking amps and 170 CCA's; the EarthX ETX36 has 680 peak cranking amps and 405 CCA's.

I'd like to find an old spring/skid so I can slip a caster wheel onto it before I fold the wings on my tri-gear. That way I can roll it around with the wings folded.

Ed, no limit on how far you can fly, other than how far your 5 gallons gets you. The one requirement that most ultralights are not technically legal on is the stall speed limit. Just Google part 103 to get all the details.

I was fairly certain that the regs said 5 gallon max fuel, and 25 miles from takeoff airport.

I like the combination of the eye-bolt and a Cessna type spring leaf tailskid - you get security for tie-down, and a lot of noise when the tail gets too close to the concrete or rocks.   The aluminum spring used on some Kitfoxes is good too.

I think the connector between the two is the main feed line to the carb or gascolator.  The only bugger is with the pick up that far off the bottom of the header, if it goes dry and you switch tanks, it make take a bit to get the fuel to the carb.  Low level this could be a real bugger if you let it happen.

he who dies with the most tools in the box wins!  It never fails, the one obscure tool that you have not used in years and years is the one you need RIGHT now at 1 am and NO place in town is open to replace the one you just sold at a garage sale last week...

I think most so called ultralights were (are) ill eagle in one (or more) way or another.  Few of the fixed wing ones make weight.  Jim Chuk

Thanks Paul. I did search and found a 12-PC metric set with 3/8" drive for ~$85 shipped form Northern Tool. Think I'll go that route. might not be the most used tools in the chest but someday I will be happy to have the other wrenches.

I would keep both headers, however, I would flip the fittings to 45* down. I do not like the looks of that potential air trap. Not sure what benefit the tubing connector between header tanks provides, is it shown that way in the Magnum manual?

well we got some outlaws around here then.. 8 gallon seat tanks in quite a few of the ultralights that used to buzz around here.  As long as they were under the 254 the rest was taken up in tankage

That's right, but remember Ron White's lesson - it doesn't matter what she looks like, it can be tucked, implanted, liposucked, stretched or sagged as needed. But always remember, you can't fix stupid!
