Geez, I didn't look at the current asking price.  It wasn't like that in the last century when I bought it.  I'm with you on the boat gauge.

Yup, that's the one I'm using.

I'm using a backup electric pump which I haven't really needed yet other than to fill the carb bowls after maintenance.  I also have a fuel pressure gauge (1" UMA) with a Mallory Fuel Pressure Isolator so I'm not running a pressurized fuel line into the cockpit.  Wish I had a good fuel flow meter, but it's not worth hundreds to me.

Sweet! Those rocker boxes are sure going to keep the Rotax fanboys guessing.

I vote for air trapped in the system.  Is your thermostat drilled with a bypass hole?  The hole allows for purging air from the system when the thermostat is closed.  It might also allow the thermostat to heat and open quicker with the little bit of flow it allows.

Different systems are used for posting pump octane.  US and Canada generally use AKI (Anti-Knock Index) which is a calculated average of (RON + MON)/2.  New Zealand, Australia and Europe use RON only.  RON and MON are both determined on test engines with variable compression ratios, but each test is at a different RPM and the fuel is supplied under different conditions.

    Luke,
Thanks for taking the time to document all this for us.  I like your jigging techniques.

My IVO medium IFA uses a Sagami planetary gear reduction DC brushed motor with 36mm diameter.  It doesn't look to be adapted from a drill, but it probably has similarities.

I'd try a hot air gun first.  Lots of adhesives used on our birds will soften with heat.  The aluminum stick should transfer heat pretty quickly.

Non issue.  They're not adjustable. You'd have to really lay on filler and paint to cause difficulty with Kitfox flaperons.

  11. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic How to rebuild a Bing 54 Carb

Thanks Joey.  Nice pics and explanations.
Do you blow out or ream any passages in the carb body?  Anything needed on the enricher circuit?  On the slide side, do you do anything to inspect the needle, replace the O-rings or anything?  I'm asking because I'm just coming up on 200 hrs and want to catch everything I can.

I've always appreciated the EAA Hints for Homebuilders videos that Brian Carpenter has done.  He's had plenty of them: http://www.eaavideo.org/search.aspx?t=carpenter

I'm running  195 main jets with my Hacman.  Let's me go full rich and throttle back through the mid-range without EGT excursions.

That's one great collection of ugly, all in one small aircraft. You've got enough material there to do a "How not to" seminar on wiring methods. I second Larry's opinion on starting over. Duct tape, wire nuts, incorrect wire insulation, lack of circuit protection devices, Dime store crimp splices, no wire lables. The only thing I don't see is wiring bundled with fuel lines.
Have fun with the do-over. Make sure to do a schematic first and the next owner will thank you.

I haven't had one go bad. I did rebuild mine since the kit was cheap and it seemed like a good idea.
I would expect you'd experience fuel starvation and possibly a fuel drip from the weep hole. A common issue is a collapsing pulse line from the engine. This line should be inspected and possibly replaced at each condition inspection.  The common Rotax suppliers sell special pulse line.

Here are some pics of the throttle cables I fabricated.
I think I bought the cable parts at ACS.  They've got all the stuff here too: http://www.greenskyadventures.com/throttle_cable/throttlecable.htm  Solder and flux were from the local hardware store. I bought the 45 degree brass tubes from a moped shop for something like $5.  The only shortcoming on them is they won't pass the cable with ferrule installed, so they aren't coming apart.
You just have to be careful set the ferrules so they don't move while dipping in the solder.  I think I slid them up the cable then lifted one wire strand a bit before sliding the ferrules back in place.

I'm not sure you can eliminate the bellcrank. You need the reverser function to work with the Bing 54 slides.
I ended up making my own custom cables which came out great. The ferrels have to be soldered on after the cables are cut to length and installed in the sheaths. It required making a little solder pot out of a pipe cap which I heated with a torch.  If you're interested, I could dig up some pics and post them up.

You can measure the resistance across the terminals of the amp meter.  If it's really low, say 0.1 or 0.2 ohms, the meter has an internal shunt.

Hi Tim, Welcome to the forum.
A Model IV can be an acceptable performer if it's kept light.  Find out what it's current empty weight is and post it up.  Also, see if the owner will take you up.  You'll get a pretty good idea once you see the climb performance with two aboard.
That plane looks pretty nice in the pics.  I note the rudder pedals aren't reinforced in accordance with the service bulletin that was issued some years ago.  What brand of prop and size is that?  It isn't one that's familiar to me.
The price does seem high to us in the states, but you have to be the judge of it's value in your market.  Post up some more details if you want more feedback.

Could be belleville washers on a B gearbox.  A C gearbox doesn't use them.
If you have any friction in the carb slides, it could do this if they don't drop smoothly together.  I had to replace my original throttle cables because I was unable to get smooth action even after lubing them generously.

Doug, I hope your beautiful upholstery job didn't go with the plane.  That alone is a work of art.

Beauty pics, Joey.  Hard to imagine flying at 565 Kts coming from the KF background.  I hope you used your #2 pencil on that SAT test sitting under your  W&B chart.
