Leni, did you give up on the spinner after that, or just religiously use the loctite?

Ultralight or medium? Two or three blade? I've got a UHS fiberglass spinner available, trimmed for a two blade medium IVO.

Thanks for the parts list, Doug. For some reason my Maule installation is charmed and I haven't had any real issues with it. I know there are better options, but it ain't broke and I guess I'm not going to fix it... Now I've just cursed myself.

You could try either onlinemetals.com or speedymetals.com if you want it shipped. If you get to Sioux Falls or Sioux City you should be able to find a steel supplier who will work with you.

I'm not sure if it helps, but here are pics of my elbow / exhaust as installed.

Thanks for the pics, Joey.  That's some awesome scenery to backdrop all that airpower.  You may have another career doing air to air photography once you retire.

TJay, the normal 582 Kitfox exhaust is specially modified to fit inside the cowling.  I believe a standard Rotax exhaust would need modification or you'll need to do a fair amount of cowling work to mount it.  So it's best to look for one off of a Kitfox.

We'll assume the Kitfox kit includes the full Model IV mixer assembly, control arms and some weld-in plates.  In any case, in my opinion, it's not a worthy investment on a Model III.

OK, I've got it now, thanks!   At $2,195, unless it can magically turn my KFIII into a IV, I think I'll continue to use my feet.

Ed, What is this kit you mention?  I just rechecked their catalog and found nada.  Would it be applicable to just Model I, or any Model I - III?

  12. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic Those of you with dual wing tanks, lets talk plumbing to the header?

A lot of early Kitfoxes did have a small (1 gallon or so) aluminum header tank mounted behind the dash to go with wing tanks.  It did have a vent connection, but only used with a manual valve to purge air from the system.  It didn't work so well and resulted in the factory coming up with the poly behind seat header.  I'm pretty sure there was a service bulletin put out pretty much mandating replacement.

Most noise canceling in your transmission comes from the microphone design.  There are usually two ports - one on the front of the mic and one on the back.  In theory, it should cancel out everything except your voice.

What headsets are you trying?  You might be able to borrow a known quiet headset and give it a try.  Also, keep the mic adjusted right next to your lower lip.

Does the thermostat have a weep hole to give some circulation when it's closed? I'm trying to understand how it will function with the long dead leg to heat in order to open.

I've never seen a fuel shutoff mounted on the panel.  Good out of the box thinking!  Out to make flow checks a bit easier.

Also, excuse my ignorance, but how do you powdercoat over powdercoat?

Per the builder's manual of the time, neither are stitched on mine and no issues.

My guess is your GSC is a 66" if it came with the kit.  You'll probably be a bit underpropped.  How about contacting GSC to get their opinion?

Thanks for posting this, Joey.  Even though I'm a flatlander I figure I can land smoother than the Maule at 08:10 in the video.  Also, I was happy to see the two-stroke Kitfox in the mix near the end.  Who's plane is that?

  20. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic C box air vent

I have the old style vented cap on mine.  When I was trying to balance the prop I replaced it with a threaded plug modified to mount an accelerometer.  With the plugged vent, it did leak some oil out the rear seal.  I've had no leakage after returning to the vented cap.

Just checking, but you're only filling the gear oil to the lower of the two witness holes, correct?  When filled correctly the gearbox only is about 1/4 to 1/3 full of oil.

Nice collection of pics, Joey.  Thanks for posting them.  As others have said, after you've been to a bunch of them you tend to forget to take pictures anymore.  You sure got around and captured the essence of Oshkosh.  Thanks!

  25. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic Earth X Battery Warning!!!

    HighCountry,
I'm glad the meltdown ended up as an inconvenience instead of an incident.  EarthX claims to use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) cells to make their battery pack which are known to be the safest Lithium technology.  These cells shouldn't exhibit this behavior, so it would be helpful for others on the forum to hear how EarthX can explain the event.  The only thing I see from their website is a maximum of 15 V should be applied from the charging circuit.  Maybe if you have a Rotax regulator, it isn't a good match for the battery pack.  In short, I'm curious what went wrong.
