I like the handling of the 8" matco.  It soaks up the bumps better and it does not dig in when your playing in the soft stuff.  That said, I wish I would have gone with the dual arm not the single arm.

I made an extended bar for the TW chains to attach to on the rudder so I could get more throw, but the tail spring is so tall when set to the correct angle that the chains are at a stupid angle and I loose most of the steering anyway.  I need to make a new bar that will drop the chain attach point down a couple inches to give me better geometry on the chains and that should help the steering a BUNCH.

The tail wheel you have is not a bad one, I just like wider so I dont have an anchor digging in on the soft stuff.

I wasn´t aimming for legalities issues, but more like an EYE BALL DESIGN, back yard inventor, this is a sweet little plane.

    take a look at it,

    1. straight square fuselage
    2. bottom side is flat, meaning can be use as a waterline and reference and easy to build in the bench.
    3. Cowling is as square as it can be, yet it looks good with the large spinner on it,
    4. wings, SIMPLE, one piece, attached to the rest with an "A" frame.
    5. Engine, Honda orinally 14hp upograded it to 30+HP
    6. workmanship is not "THAT" questionable

However he needs help like the rest of us, Just a little bit of help and he will be on track, he was banned from a local airport... that´s why he is looking for a take off place...

is a ultralight in definition, and therefore the rules are different, if he would have choose a different design, I don´t think he could get away with many things...

either way an A + for his effort, workmanship and enthusiasm!!

    Regards

Doug, Sorry I am so long getting back on this.  I have mine set about the same as Jerry with the exception of the oil temp alarm which I set to 270 F which is 15 F below Rotax max.

Looks like you have the good Maule TW with the larger, inflatable tire.  Wish I had that instead of the little hard wheel.

I heated the Hysol'd fittings today and they twisted right out! Thanks for that tip!

Yes, I agree that the 45s going down is the best option for all the reasons mentioned. The do both combine and run forward to the fuel shutoff valve and then through the firewall to the engine.

Thanks again for all the help! It is great being able to find answers to these questions! It is nice not having to reinvent the wheel with every road bump!

I know everybody with a Matco won't go back to Maule. Right? I went out tonight and did some high speed taxi practice on a friends pasture strip. Pretty rough. I run the maule with the lock/release cam removed. That helped a lot when things are not going straight. Anybody notice huge handling improvement going to the Matco? I'm carrying extra weight for my soob up front. Had to really get beefy with the springs to take the lickin. Double spring, extra heavy duty.post-232-0-03135200-1399263403.jpeg

The spring is nothing to special. A piece of old trailer spring cut to the right length. Use the hole where the center bolt went through. A good bit and slow drilling speed will drill through spring steel. Use a grinder to shape the sides where it fits into the saddle. Probably take an hour for everything if you have a basic workshop. That's why Alaska is so much fun!   Seems like every little Podunk airport down here has 2 guys in suits and ties doing ramp checks!   I think I have figured it out tho - If you land on the small strips that have an X on them, then there are no suits and ties waiting!

I thought it was very nice for someone to mark these strips - Guess it took too much paint to put 'No Ramp Checks' on the runway, so they just used an X.....

I guess I should read before I post.  like a lot of things that are common practice up here, we do shit that may not quite be to the letter of the law... I never heard of anyone here getting hit for having too much gas in the tank.  I have even seen them with tear drop tanks on the sides in addition to the 8 gallon seat tank

I just picked up my EarthX battery at the show yesterday and learned a few more things about it.  It is the L I FE (Lithium Iron Oxide) like Leni said and is a lot more stable than other lithium types.  It has the built in circuitry that keeps the battery cells all balanced continually while charging (from the alternator or any charger).  It also cuts off the charge if it goes over 16 volts and automatically kicks back in when the charge drops to under 16 volt so it protects the battery.  If the battery does somehow get severe over voltage it "plumps" it rather than causing a nuclear meltdown and fire.  Plumping it just causes the plates to separate and the battery goes dead.  One additional feature of the EarthX is that the cases are made of a flameproof plastic material so they don't burn.  You cannot connect them in parallel with lead batteries though since the lead batteries are normally charged at 12.5 volts and the EarthX are normally charged at 14.5 volts. the lead battery will run the EarthX battery down when they are connected together.

The battery is a true 3.5 lbs plus has been performed very well in snowmachines for years, supposed to work fine at -30.  The PC680 has 520 peak cranking amps and 170 CCA's; the EarthX ETX36 has 680 peak cranking amps and 405 CCA's.

Ed, no limit on how far you can fly, other than how far your 5 gallons gets you. The one requirement that most ultralights are not technically legal on is the stall speed limit. Just Google part 103 to get all the details.

I like the combination of the eye-bolt and a Cessna type spring leaf tailskid - you get security for tie-down, and a lot of noise when the tail gets too close to the concrete or rocks.   The aluminum spring used on some Kitfoxes is good too.
