I did a couple of 582 rebuilds. Well maybe not actual rebuilds because I do not have a boring bar and that stuff of my own. But I have torn these engines down at least half a dozen times. What I did was tear the engine(s) down at 150, 300, 450 on one, and 600 hours on two different 582's and completely clean them up and put them back together with new seals and gaskets. I never had a problem with RV seals after I learned about silica free antifreeze and distilled water so I never did the ceramic seals myself.

At 600 hours on one engine tore it down and sent the old crank and cylinders to Lockwood. They bored the cylinders to 1st over and fit new pistons and sent me a new crank and pistons using the original crank as trade in. I reassembled the engine and ran it till I sold the plane with it running great.

The other 582 after routine inspection and cleaning teardowns I sent to Lockwood at 600 hours and had them do everytthing, a complete overhaul including the ceramic seal mod. It also worked flawlessly and is still running in a friend's plane.

Here's the most interesting thing. I do not know if they still have the deal going as when I sent the engine off to them for the rebuild, but when I did the price was no different for them to do the rebuild INCLUDING LABOR than it was for me to buy the parts, have them bore the cylinders and fit the pistons and put it back together myself. The only difference was additional shipping cost.and the extra to have them machine the block to install the RV with ceramic seal.  And their rebuild looked like a brand new engine unlike my re assemblies which did not look like new engines because I do not have cleaning tanks and so forth.

If I were you I would price the parts from Lockwood and price them doing the entire job. I found there was virtually no difference....except the TON of hours I spent doing the labor myself.

If things are still the same it's a real no brainer. Have Lockwood do the overhaul. Seems like the cost of parts or complete overhaul was in the neighborhood of $2300 which ever way you go if I remember correctly. It's been a few years.

I learned a lot doing my own teardowns and don't regret doing them, but If the numbers still wotk out like they did when I priced the O'haul, it is almost stupid to do it yourself.

I realize I have to get legal with the other lights but I still need to plan out how to do it all. I already have the wing tip nav lights but no strobes yet. I'm looking into that now and have been doing a lot of research on the subject.

Having had experience with spotlights that have fairly low lumens (210 for example), yet very bright output and a good range of somewhere near 600 meters, I have to say I still don't think that lumens converts to candela very well. It's too subjective of a measurement and it's done differently. Like comparing how much an orange and apple weigh, it doesn't really matter since they are just different.

I really hate to tell you two "youngsters" that, in that day and age, Barnstormers were more likely charging 50 cents to $1 a ride, and gas was probably 5 cents a gallon!  His plane probably cost $50, as WW1 surplus......
Prices may have been as low as 5 to 10 cents during the depression years - a farm laborer then was getting about 3 1/2 cents an hour, or 35 cents for a 10-hour day!
I was quickly told all of this when I complained about only getting 35 cents an hour in the early 1950s!
But, still, a good story - and 50 cents was 50 cents, and bought a lot of food back then!

For a landing light, like the $500 "aircraft" HID XENON, go to ebay motors and check out the HID Xenon spotlights from $50 to $150 - as usual, anything for "aircraft" is totally overpriced.
I even saw some LED XENON lights - whatever that means?

I heard that one before, but slightly different.  In that version the man really wanted to go, but his wife was adamant that fifty bucks was fifty bucks.......

I believe Kitfox said to leave about 13 inches of extra hose for folding the wing - I cant see how you could possibly need all that - I would measure with wings in both positions, and add some - you can always make it shorter, but not longer.

If you don't get some good info, PM me and I can post on here a copy of the Magnum fuel line routing.

I can't help you with a picture of mine tonight but I have one tank that is from an Avid and one from a Kitfox on my plane. The builder had to replace the right tank and already had access to a 12 gallon Kitfox type tank so he threw that in. They are both routed slightly different because of that.. The fuel line runs through the hole right in front of the rear spar carry through on the Avid tank. This seems to work really well and with just a little slack in the line it moves in and out when folding the wings. On the Kitfox tank where the pickup is under the wing instead of in the wing root it comes up through the slightly slanted area and only about 2" in front of the rear spar carry through.

If I remember tomorrow I'll get some pictures of this for you. Hopefully the description will at least help you out, that is if you can visualize how mine runs.

Ok fellas I still need a pic or two showing how others have ran the gas line from the wing into the cabin. I've got the wings on for good now (hopefully) and running the line from the wing inside is one of the last things I need to do.

Here's a pic of the inside of the plane during construction. You can see the raised skylight and turtledeck

    Biplane flight
For years a barnstormer making his rounds through the countryside had stopped into the same sleepy little town and provided thrills for everyone willing to pay the $50 fee for the ride. He would always get screams of joy during his rides and never disappointed those who took the flight.

After several years of seeing this same couple come over and look at his dusty old Biplane, he stopped the man and asked him if he wanted a ride. His answer was very sincere that he indeed did want to go for the ride but "fifty bucks is fifty bucks" and he just couldn't justify spending the money. He talked for a minute or two more telling the couple that it was only fifty bucks. His competition had doubled their price and were charging a hundred for the same ride that he would give. The couples response was still, "fifty bucks is fifty bucks. The intrepid flyer thought for a moment and offered to give the couple a ride for free, with only one catch, that neither of them make a sound during the flight.

The husband turned to his wife and with a mutual agreement they both agreed that they could be quiet and took the pilot up on his offer.

Shortly after takeoff the pilot realized that this couple was serious about not having to pay the $50 for the ride and started to bank over, push over the top a little and overall create a nice rollercoaster ride. This didn't seem to have any effect, and there was no sound from either passenger, so he decided he'd have to get a little more drastic to get paid for this flight. Soon enough he was doing loops, rolls, hammerheads and all manner of maneuvers that he knew the old plane could handle, but still not a peep!

Realizing he was beaten he turned back and headed to the airport. After landing he turned around to congratulate the couple on their free once in a lifetime ride. That's when he realized that the wife was completely missing. He was startled and asked the man, "where is your wife"? The answer was a resounding, "I was going to say something about that, just about the second loop is when she fell overboard. I really did want to say something, but fifty bucks is fifty bucks"!

I have been getting my cranks from twisted metal racing. The pistons from a seadoo are great and 75 each. A gasket kit for a 93 citation 582 for around 50 bucks and your golden. The ceramic seal is a couple hundred for the seal and case machining. No reason to be into a complete rebuild for more than grand.

    582 mod 90 rebuild options
I have a mod 90 582 that was installed in my Avid in '93 and has not been rebuilt since as far as the logs say.  I am at 296.1 hours and was planning a 300 hour overhaul, at least this time especially because of the age.  I would like the ceramic seal upgrade and a complete going through as well.  I have rebuilt a few two stroke dirt bike engines through the years and had no problem using aftermarket parts, in fact I preferred them.  Now with this engine I feel like I should send it to Lockwood for a rebuild with OEM parts and a new crank yada yada yada at the tune of around $3k.  I know Rotax Rick and the like can do the job for around $2200 and most folks have been pleased with the work he has done.  Let me know your stories.

It's been 15 years since I did it the last time…  Yeah, kind of melancholy.

I am already making plans for next year.  Looking into GPS downloads to make navigating easier, a few accessories for the sleds, the wife needs a new helmet, etc, etc.

nice!  the snow here is pretty much gone.  I think this will be my last weekend on skis, then I will go back to wheels.

I hate putting the sleds away every spring, it depresses me

I think we went on our last ride of the season today.  The trails in Wisconsin close on April 1.  Unfortunately, we won't have another chance to get out before then.  We trailered up to a place called Boulder Junction (KBDJ).  Its in the Lake Superior snow belt and the trails were absolutely awesome.  Had a nice ride and used up the last of the gas in the sleds.  Now I will put 5 gallons of 100LL in each, fog the motors, do a little maintenance and put them away for the summer.
