I believe you can adapt the K&N filter to mate up to the Soob Carb intake if you have room - there may be an adapter?
One suggestion I read said to use the carb cover from a Horizon, and cut it down to minimum height, and the filter was in the snout (What kind I donno) - you could cut the snout and put the K&N on - the snout, or lower part of the cover, has a trap door for heat riser air which can be converted to manual setting.

Best advise I can give you, is to cut the top of the vertical post and measure the wall thickness - you need to insert a tube inside of it to make a strong splice anyway - I am guessing you have an early model something -  The Kitfox 4 stab is about 52 or 54", or so, in height -
I made mine about 4 inches less than that, and made the rudder extension taller so it overlapped the top of the stab to make a balanced rudder - I rounded my rudder at all outside points so not to have sharp corners which makes covering a little easier, IMO. - It could be done either way.  If you have the early hinges, don't forget to put a spacer (1/16"?) between the stab vertical tube and the hinge tube, and the same on the rudder hinge.
I also made the chord of all my tail feathers parts 6" more than the early Kitfoxes, and added trimtabs.

Do they make something besides a foam filter that will work?  K&N or something?  Sucking chunks of foam into the carb does not sound like my idea of a good time!  Glad you nursed it back around and got her on the ground in one piece.. all too often it does not work out that well.

Bet you didn't need a seal belt either   When mine quit I had that seat sucked so far up my a$$ that I don't think a 5 point harness would have held me any tighter

Wow! Thanks for sharing! That could have ended a lot worse!
I've often thought about just washing the foam filter out and using it for as long as I can. I have not done that and replaced it at every conditional inspection just because that made it easy to remember to change it.

I'm glad you were able to fix it easily and get back in the air! Thanks again for sharing!

My tach is hooked up to the gray wire.  I once was going to fly with the master switch turned off to do some testing.  When I did the mag check it did like yours...RPM increased about 1000 rpm with one mag switched off.  I turned the master switch on and it was back to normal.  These Rotax electrical systems are very sensitve to a loose or corroded ground too.  The ignition system can do some puzzling things like feeding back through other parts of the electrical components when there is a grounding problem.   I have never been able to figure out why mine did that with the master switch off though.

I am making a mod to my vertical stab to accomodate a taller rudder.  I see the o.d. is 9/16. Anyone know the thickness?

    Foam air filter
I had a little wake up call last week. Did my regular preflight including looking under the hood. Fired up my soob and warmed up until it was up to 160. When I taxied to take off and went to full throttle the engine bogged but caught up and I took off. Everything seemed normal but maybe just a little sluggish. I flew down the valley climbing at near full throttle. Levelled out and cruised for maybe five minutes. I throttled back for cruise. When I went back to full throttle the engine stumbled big time. I had a real moment of OH $#!T. Thank Christ it throttled up and I made the hasty return to base. Opened the cowl and took a close look at everything. First I thought ignition. Went to town and picked up new plugs. Put them in the next day. After I fired it up it would barely run without choke. When I looked real close at the air filter I noticed a very small hole eroded through the front. It is a washable foam type with a metal support grate behind it. When I removed the filter it was seriously eroded on the back side where it rubs against the metal grate. All the foam that broke away went straight into the carb. I took the air box off completely to see. The carb was visibly contaminated. I took the carb off(Holley 5200) and gave it a good cleaning. Be careful about what jet came from where. There is also a spring and check ball that need to go back in the right place. Put everything back on and ran it up. Purrs perfectly again. Ordered new filter foam from Bracket. The gentleman explained to me that air filter foam needs to be changed out every 2 years. I ordered 2 filters. Cheers. B

What kind of tach are you running? Grey wire needle tach? If you can hear an audible drop and it is within 150 rpm to your tuned ear you are good. We all recommend a $40 tiny tach to verify RPM.

I think that is asking for trouble. If the blades won't hold tight, they probably have been compressed to much already. Compressing them more may cause them to let go, and loosing a blade on a running engine is never good. Jim Chuk

The main gear is different for the tricycle setup so the entire landing gear must be replaced to go to a nose gear. Sounds like it may be an alignment problem and also the bungees maybe need tightened or replaced. I am sure there several people on this list that can help solve the problem if you are not ready to throw in the towel. I sold the nose gear that I had a couple of years ago.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater!  Doing the nose dragger conversion is a major knee-jerk reaction.  Lets see if we can help tame the taildragger first!

    First off:
What model Avid is this?  A, B, C, IV?
How well aligned is the main gear?  Toe in?  Toe out?
What condition are the Bungees in?  Are they tight enough?
What tailwheel is on the plane?

    Looking for nosewheel.
A friend and I finished an Avid heavyvhauler a few years ago but it is a miserable twitchy little bastard on takeoff with two people on board. We think the gear is bent.
We would like to change to a nose wheel.
Does any one have a nose wheel to sell and the instructions to convert from taildragger.

  20. JustNorm added a post in a topic PLASTIC STRUT FAIRINGS?

I think I started with about 8 inch.  I did one break at 1 inch and the next break at 3.5 inches.  I did not think the thin material would work but when you wrap the one inch tube it forms nice.  I then rivited the bottom of the 3.5 inch piece to the one inch break which hides the rivet inside the fairing. Did this at the rear of the fairing.  I then filled the fairings with spray foam to make the fairing stay in place and add some structure.  I sprayed the foam into each end and also at the jury strut opening.  I may end up doing it again and maybe use .024 Aluminum for the material.  I am super happy with the results.  A person could tweak the planes till your blue in the face but I think I am done tweaking this bird as I have a KitFox IV to re-Cover.  Now that is another major project.  I keep adding things to the want list and so far I have put the speed tail mod on and the wide body mod.  Looking at a good cargo area mod but that is not as important as I am normally a short hop pilot.  So many planes so lttlle time.

    Mag check
Hi all I have a Kf 2 with a rotax582 when I check the mags the tach increases around 900-1000 rpm . This reading isn't accurate the rpm actually decreases as expected , the strange thing is this only happens on one mag . Any help would be great thanks J.

Maybe a cheap option to resurrect your existing prop; I think I heard of somebody machining a thin layer off the inner surface of the gsc front hub plate to allow for tighter grip (if it is bottoming out before fully clamping the blades into position).

Standard flying in Alaska - folks down here would ground you for doing that! And the insurance would be cancelled!
I was told when I first went to Alaska, "Folks down South treat planes like sports cars - Up here, we treat them like Dump trucks, and the runway can be anywhere you can get down and off again!"
I have watched those DC4 guys take off from Anchorage and looked like they were loaded so heavy that they didn't try to climb and just flew low over Cook inlet waters on their way South.

Ed, yes I did. I used the #4 ford viscosity cup, but the manual uses the #2 Zahn as well.

The #2 Zahn rate for priming the fabric is:
    17" for the penetration coat
    23" for the second coat

    For Fiberglass:
    17" with #2 Zahn

I would use the viscosity cups on the first batch then just replicate the mix ratio on the following batches.
I would add a slight bit more reducer because it seemed to evaporate when spraying at the higher temperatures, but just a touch more.
I found multiple batches helped reduce waste from mixing too much. Multiple batches helped keep the consistancy steady because it was not cooking off due to catalyst reaction and reducer evaporation. Max time of use is one hour in the manual, but I found 30 minutes to be optimal, 45 minutes if you wanted to stretch it!

The main issue I had was getting my spray gun nozzle and needle right. I am using the stand alone Citation 4stage turbine respirator/ sprayer with an Axis spray gun. I found the 1.4mm needle and nozzle worked best for the primer. I started with 1.0 and it was way to small.

    I hope that helps,
    Ron
