Hunted out at this mine back in August.  These guys flew in a load of parts for a D8 including a pair of tracks and drivers.  Obviously they don't realize this is a cargo plane, they would fit right in at a local fly-in.  It is quite a sight and soundful to get buzzed by this thing.

Many of those turbine DC3s were converted here in Wisconsin, at Basler Flight Service on Wittman Field, home of EAA's Airventure.

They are awesome planes.  Amazing that some of them are pushing 80 years old...

Standard flying in Alaska - folks down here would ground you for doing that! And the insurance would be cancelled!

I was told when I first went to Alaska, "Folks down South treat planes like sports cars - Up here, we treat them like Dump trucks, and the runway can be anywhere you can get down and off again!"

I have watched those DC4 guys take off from Anchorage and looked like they were loaded so heavy that they didn't try to climb and just flew low over Cook inlet waters on their way South.

Jack pointed out that it is a DC6.  Sorry I got that wrong.  They are all great planes!

I thought that looked like a DC-6, but wasn't sure what a DC-4 Looked Like - think maybe they are only 2 engines?
