  4. akflyer added a post in a topic Bush gear differences

I have not measured the new gear I got, but when avid first started making the wide gear it was 14" wider than stock. That was soon changed to 10" wider due to unforseen issues with going wider than that. Just a little food for thought.

What have you done to prove out your "bush" gear? Any off airport pics? Any tests at gross to beat them up n make sure it's not going to tweak the fuse?

I only ask this because I don't want to see a member here get into a bind like the other makers of "bush" gear that was sold untested and pretty obviously not engineered other that using the "that looks about right" engineering method. By changing one angle just a tad you can double or triple the forces on the longereons.

One last thought.... for "bush" work, you want to be able to keep the tail up out of the rocks and sand etc. By moving the axle forwards you are putting more weight on the tailwheel. This turns the tailwheel into a boat anchor on sand and gravel strips.....

I don't want to slow ya down or to burst your bubble, I just want to make you aware of the pit falls of selling "bush gear" that have never seen the bush

I will look at my Kitfox 4 and Avid Magnum manuals and see what I can post on here for you.
    EDMO
Here is a page from the Kitfox 1 manual - you should have it and some other pages - look at page number. My other manuals are not as clear, but I could make a drawing if you really need it.
I would make it a 2-piece assembly, and make the front attachment like the rear, without the spacer, and cover with aluminum strip - you may want to put some sealer on the front joint - make sure it is compatable with lexan and Plexiglas. You may want to make the front angle wider so you can bolt both the WS and SL separately to it.
If you don't have the drawing and directions for fitting the WS to the door frame, I can post it when you need it.
The SL should be wider to overlap the wing joint - you need to clear the spot where the pin goes into the spar.

I would sure like to see some directions on how it all works. there is nothing in my build manual about this or turtle deck building

  7. EDMO added a post in a topic another kitfox 1 question

    TJay,
Those parts are for attaching the windscreen and skylight, and to make a slot for the turtledeck to slide into - some planes have one-piece WS and SL, but I think that is a bad idea - some have had problems with the WS cracking and have had to replace it - no need to have to pay for a larger lexan by having the SL as a part of the WS. I would have to look at my KF1 manual, but there are different ways to do this - I can look at my KF4 manual if you need other ideas. I like my SL to be a dark tint. I use a light bronze for other windows and TD.
    EDMO
You may rivet the aluminum to the crosstubes, but I think it is better to bolt the WS and SL with rubber or plastic washers under the bolt heads instead of rivets which can cause cracking. This is more work, but could prevent replacing parts later on.

    another kitfox 1 question
So I have seen a few other kitfoxes with aluminum pieces riveted on the top of the front and rear spar upper carry through tubes, Now on the newer ones I don't see that anymore, I have all the aluminum pieces and rivets and I'm sure I could figure out how to do it , but is it necessary and does it do much

I'm building a custom wide gear very similar to the Avid bush gear only im using cub style bungees and making it a little wider than the airdale gear. I'm building them for both the Avids and Kitfox. Main tubing is 1" .058 4130. If you are buying one made for the other keep in mind that the cabane will be different. Kitfox had one width and avid had two different widths. FWIW but any of them will be much better than any of the stock gears out there.

Here is my last one on a friends Kitfox IV it sits 20" wider 2" higher and 2" more forward than the stock gear that he originally had. Made a whole new plane out of it.

Took the Sport Cub out today
Gorgeous late afternoon flight with my Sport Cub this afternoon.

It's just too bad it only has a 4ft wingspan and is made of foam!! This one comes out of the box with VGs and Bushwheels though. Even has flaps. Flies amazing and is a hoot landing in the grass.

The Bandit is a Mark IV, except it comes with a fabric leading edge, sling seat and no finished interior. I have the stol wings, 7/8" lift struts and .083 wing spars.

Where did the 'Bandit' Model fall in the Model C, Model Iv, etc.?  I have what I've always thought was a Model C/Model IV hybrid, but it looks identical to this one - same cowl, same tail, etc.

The reading on the spars near or at the fuselage should be 1.25 and at the very tip rib should be about 1.75 - but don't think the tip measurement is critical as long as both wings are the same.
I need a new keyboard so I can do fractions and question marks easier.   I think you are correct.

  22. akflyer added a post in a topic so hows your engine heater work?

Here are the basic contents of the survival bag I carry in the plane.

The basic contents.  First aide kit with a few suplementary items stored in it such as a strobe light, flashlight, razor knife, bast match and normal steel and flint bar, wet start fire cubes and a small roll of duct tape.  Additionally I have a hatchet, wyoming break down saw, cordage, tarp, heavy duty space blanket, wool blanket, TP and a speed steel knife sharpener.

All this goes in one dry bag with my 2 man 4 season tent in its own bag.

Additionally in the winter I carry this little unit.  An ammo can with an MSR multi fuel stove and some scat hose make a very good engine preheater or you can pipe the heat into the tent and keep the4 flame and gas container outside the tent.  Very light and very handy!  I used it yesterday to preheat the plane and engine at -18.

Last one needs no explanation... waiting on the rescue chopper can take some gtime, may as well enjoy the camping trip while your there right

    Wing rigging question
Ok here it goes. I would like to double check my self here before I drill through through the bottom of the spars. ok I have the wings square with the fuselage dihedral is set  strut attach fittings are hose clamped in place . top of the spars are drilled and pins dropped in. when I set the level  next to the fuselage laying on the top of the spars my front spar is 1 1/4"  lower, now with 1 degree twist at the wing tips when I set the level on the spars the front spar should be 1 3/4" lower correct?

I just put Part# 13022-SP-35 on my Classic 4 Kitfox.  It is 3 leaves.  The bottom 2 leaves are full length and the top leaf shorter.  There is an oversize bolt hole on the tail wheel end of the middle leaf so it can flex.  I used just the bottom 2 (full length) leaves.
