Just looked in my year old Wag Aero catalog, and they had the 8" Matco pneumatic tailwheel for $235. Saw an 8" Maule on ebay with an opening bid of $195. 5 days to go with no bids yet. Jim Chuk

Been along time with this install.
This is what we did to the lower cowl.

I recall John McBean and some of the Desert Squadron builders discussing this topic years ago. IIRC, they said there was no appreciable increase in top speed when swapping to Hoerner tips from drooped, nor any great decrease in stall speeds when swapping from Hoerner to droop tips. Boiled down to aesthetics for most.

    Short report:
At first I bent my old (soft) spring cold with the hydraulic press. It works fine!
And now it isnt soft. The angle is very important.
    Thank younJim!
Then I cut the new old spring like Jim Chuk told.
But then I must help in my toughters new flat ( paint the wall and so on...
An Freiday I will test the two versions and then I will choose the best.
    Best regards from Germany

  11. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic DROOP TIP VS SPEEDSTER HOERNER TIPS

There was a study done on the different types of wingtips that I found on the net a year or two ago.  It was done quite a few years back, don't remember if it was by a gov. agency or collage.  In comparing the different types of tips, figures showed not a lot of difference from one to the other.  I do remember that the drooped tips had a slightly better lift.  I looked for the study last night and didn't find it, that's why I didn't say anything already.  I was searching drooped tips when I ran across the study.  Pictures were all in black and white, so it was fairly old.  Jim Chuk

FWIW  I changed out the droop tips on a KF4 , and saw no difference in performance, but did get a better view and quit banging my head ,when I walked around the plane.

Even if the eucalyptus oil worked the cost would be prohibitive. Starwest Botanicals sell it, purchased some a couple of years ago.

    Doug,

You are the man! Thanks for all of the testing! I will try to do the same with the paper. I was surprised that so many of those didn't harm the plexi! I made the mistake of using acetone on plexi before, I also dropped a rag with MEK on the new, custom molded windshield of my open cockpit biplane...I got to buy a new new windshield after that mistake! Not even one flight before I destroyed it! Damn the luck!

I've had one large door window soaking in water and soap for 3 days, with a coating of goo gone each night. I am getting large, complete pieces of glue and paper just by slowly pulling the paper up. However, it will only go so far then tear. It tears because you reach a dry spot, that is hard.

I'm trying the chems tomorrow, because this sucks!!!

This is one of those things that the Internet has a million remedies for and not one damn thing works! My favorite one so far is eucalyptus oil! I don't even know where to find that! Maybe on the Koala bear food isle? Ha!

Thanks for all of the help guys...something is going to work, or at least work better!

Don't know Ed, was mostly concerned how the solvents would affect the acrylic sheet.

Thanks I had heard pledge worked just fine. Ed it sounded like Meguires was preferred on the AOPA article I read about keeping your tube and fabric airplane looking good.

Spark Plug boots:  I have been running NGK boots from "Fleet Farm" for years on Rotax engines with no ill effects.  I think these are $3-4 each.  Same exact part as the ones from Rotax.

The Rotax oil filter has a very high pressure bypass valve.  From the testing that LEAF did on all the filters they found that fit (Purolater, Fram, Douglass, WIX and a couple others), the bypass were all much lower pressure.  Meaning that the high pressure operations of a 912 (compared to the commercial engines the other filters are for) will usually bypass these filters, rendering them useless at most times.  IMO, I have a $10k engine, that I trust my life to.  I'm not going cheap on the oil filter.

Rotax 912 engines do not have thermostats.

I've built a new expansion tank for the Mangy Fox that uses a normal "mini" radiator cap (16 psi) for $16 rather than the $90 Rotax unit.  I got the neck and cap from Summit Racing.  Cap  Neck
