I had the prop question too and Jim or Bandit or someone answered that with the smaller diameter prop you can set your static pitch at a higher degree, and you will have faster cruise.
The 72" Warp Drive on the Subaru EA-81 has to be set at a shallow pitch to get static rpm, and your cruise is less -
Warp Drive said to go with 68" with more pitch and takeoff should not suffer.

    Hi Bill,

I really haven't done much yet in speed mods. The short wing without the concave airfoil is the biggest help. Since I bought the plane I have removed the side mounted radiator and switched to a Kitfox style belly mount. So far I have found that adjusting the prop has made the biggest change in performance and a degree or two can make a huge difference. I am planning to change over to a MKIV cowling with custom radiators more for aesthetics but I am also hoping it will help with a problem I have with melting a muffler mount. I will also be changing to hydraulic brakes and narrower tires in the process. That might get me a mph or 2 extra.

It is true that we are at sea level for take off and initial climb. Our cruise numbers are typically between 2500 and 5000 ft MSL and is still around 100 mph at 5900-6000 rpm. I currently have the 582 with B-box and 2.58:1 but am using a GSC ground adjustable prop. You didn't mention what diameter your prop was. Mine currently is 68". I had the 64" blades previously on my 532 and saw my fastest numbers with the smaller diameter. As soon as I get my engine running better and a few hours on it I plan to put the 64" blades back in and see how much difference they make on the same engine, same day.

I am surprised that you had trouble with take off. Mine seems really easy to keep straight on the take off roll. I wonder if the toe in/out on the mains might be different?

Type of gear and tire size would play pretty deep into my answer on that one. With the 12" wide Nancos, stock gear, and pavement crosswinds suck! The good news is of it's over about 15 just land across the runway

Now that I am settled in the new hangar I plan on doing the gear soon. The flying weather has been amazing lately so I haven't been too motivated to take the airplane down to do it.

Ron, why not try the cooking oil covered with Saran Wrap trick. Will definitely soften the backing and might help breakdown the adhesive better than plain soap and water. Won't hurt acrylic, if I had a piece with backing I'd give it a go. I'd try both peanut butter and mayonaisse too, something about the oils seem to remove sticky stuff pretty well. I know it gets gum out of carpet lol.

While you are adding gussets to the uprights you should add some support bands to the rudder cable attach horns as well this is another area that has been known to give away. also its not a bad idea to have a small tab on the inside pedal to keep your feet off of the v bars in the center of the plane (on Avids anyways I'm assuming KF is the same)

I have the single fork setup on ours and i have a bad tendency to pull left as soon as the tailwheel hits the ground. If you look at it directly from the rear it even has a slight tilt to it. I'm going to replace it with the double fork and would recommend you go dual fork as well. also the rudder to tailwheel chain angle is pretty extreme with the single and is much better with the dual fork. just my .02. but hey if your determined to go single I may have on soon

i was hoping to buy the complete assembly and see how it works before tinkering with it. It does look like I need a shim because I think we all use an 1/1/2 inch tailspring and the matco looks like its set up for 1/3/4 tailspring. Do I just make that bushing or are you guys buying them. thanks.

Joey, when are you going to put your new landing gear on? I'm anxious to get a report!
    The flying looks unbelievably fun!

    Joey,

If you have some scratches and stuff, Maguires Plastic X works good! I've been using it after I get the damn paper off my old windows and it cleans them up good! I also use it on my vehicle headlights and my Jeep soft top windows! You basically wipe on and wipe off.

    See ya,

    Ha! Ha!

Ok, I tried lacquer thinner and mineral spirits and they created no big help.
The secret is getting the stuff moist again...soapy water is working best, chemicals evaporate to quickly and don't saturate down to the glue.
I'll try the other ones later.

JOEY AND JIM,Someone needs to advise TJay about the different cams and how they affect the handeling - I cant do that, since I don't know anything about MATCO tailwheels - Just been eavesdropping on some earlier posts on here.

With the 670 you push the throttle forward let the tail raise and you are flying.
