  4. nlappos added a post in a topic Noisy Radio EMI Fix

For the record, the Avid Flyer Mk IV that I shielded has a Rotax 582 blue head with Ducatti ignition, and the coils and wires were completely open prior. The EMI hash was a complex noise, not just a snapping but a white noise characteristic that was obviusly RPM sensitive. In addition to complete interference with VHF radio transmit, the noise was also bombing my intercom, forcing it to break squelch and provide continuous noise in cruise.
After the fix, all is nearly quiet as can be, and the Yaesu hand held  VHF has about 30 NM range.
The coils were wide open. In the Rotax factory shielding kit that doesnt seem to be available any more, the coils and wires are also put in a faraday cage. I seriously dubt that the noise was spark plug snap alone. Here are a few shots of the simple copper wrapping that I did to the coils. I made sure the copper was in intimate contact with the cil mounts and the plug wires that had been wrapped, so resistance between all the shielding was a fraction of an Ohm, and so too was it all to aircraft ground.

    C Clip install
    Hey Guys,
I'm installing my Pistons after doing a decarbon on the 582 and realize getting the c clips back in is a chore! Any body have a technique for this that doesn't scratch the Pistons? Rotax has a tool for $175 for this, do I have to use this? Does anyone have one I can rent from them? Thanks, Bryce

Hey TJay, thanks for taking a picture of your I beams. From your picture they look just like the ones KF supplies. Here is a page I saw that shows the KF parts:

I'll have to give "Just" a call for some more parts. Thanks again!

I don't like any kind of electricity in my gas tanks. A mechanical float sender is safer.
    EdMO
Spruce and Kitfox both sell senders for low fuel alarm for header tanks for about $130 - $160? I don't know if they will fit yours, and I don't know if they are the same part, or different from each other.

    TJay,
Don't overlook putting a large rounded-bottom V in each end of the insert webs - That helps eliminate the sudden stress point at the end of the insert by making it weaker there.
The inserts look impressive, how thick are the webs?
Now your weak point will be the struts, and the Kitfox 1 struts were only for 850 GW, no matter how strong your spars are, and Kitfox 2 was 950 GW, but its your decision of how heavy you want to fly it.
I think you should consider putting something besides Kitfox 1 on your data plate, maybe Kitfox 1/3, or something?

It looks like the trailer posted above has pin latches on the outside of the walls.

The original builder of my Avid used 90° barbed fittings at the top and bottom (pretty much vertical) of the aluminum 6 gal left wing tank for a sight tube(I used a sharpie for 3,4,5 gallon marks and an unpainted window on the fiberglass right wing. Unfortunately, Anything below 3 gallons or above 5 in the left tank and anything below 5 gallons in the right tank is unreadable due to the root ribs blocking view. I will eventually install an analog float gauge in the right wing which will let me read pretty much to empty. I might be able to do the same with the left tank but it will require a bit of surgery on the wing/tank to get it in there.

I have a 2.5 gallon header tank which has a capacitance fuel sender/ panel mounted gauge that just recently crapped out on me. I am trying to decide on how I want to replace that. If I go with a capacitance sender again I will have to replace the gauge to match the current sender output of 1-5 volts vs the older units 33-240 ohm resistance. My other option is to buy a 20" reed switch sending unit and keep the current gauge which was new just a couple years ago. If anyone knows of another option that is relative inexpensive that would be great. The system from Belite would be several hundred dollars, otherwise it would be a real possibility.

Currently, my SOP is to burn fuel from the right tank until empty (I have a clear glass fuel filter housing minus the filter for each tank so I can visually check for fuel flow) then switch to the left tank which I sort of use as a reserve on top of the header tank which by itself would give me a 1/2 hour reserve. The header tank gauge is the final countdown - if for some reason I have a fuel flow problem to it or for some strange reason actually run both wing tanks dry (that has never happened). I do run on the fuel in the left tank periodically to keep the fuel fresh. All fuel is drained from the fiberglass tank at the end of the day. I don't want to take any unnecessary chances with delamination.

I do have a fuel flow gauge to be installed some day but I never fill the right tank so it would be a little tough to use for the totalizer function.

OK I beams showed up today, excellent packaging and top quality i beams, Not that I ever thought Just aircraft would have junk parts. It looks like there is plenty of material on top and bottom for a bit of filing and sanding if I need to. They are the full 60 inches long which I like, some say just extra weight but hey if I rebuild my wing struts to match my spars I could have the only Kitfox model 1 1200 Ha, But I will probably just stick with a 1050 lbs gross because that is way more than I will ever be,

    Mark,
When I was looking at them my plan was to cut out a section of the back where the wings and horizontal could fit it, then have an aluminum angle plate I could slip in place with a pin that the door closes against to cover the opening I cut out.  That way I could make any of the available trailers work.  Just make sure you pull the pins and get that aluminum plate off the door frame before you push back!

No scale is going to be 100% accurate, but it will darn sure get you close enough to know when its time to land, or if you have enough to think about taking off for a few circuits around the pattern.  If you want really good knowledge of how much fuel is on board get a flow meter with totalizer on it.  I love mine and hate to fly without it.  I know exactly how much fuel I have on board and if I was not so lazy I could hook it up to the GPS and it would give me miles and time to bingo as well as how much I will burn between here and there..

Mine has what looks like a garage door spring, with cables that attach to the door.  I can't imagine how I'd lift it otherwise, the door ramp is rated for 4,500 lbs and is HEAVY.  The sides aren't there because of the door lift, they are there just to make the opening narrower and p*ss me off I think   .  I suspect they are the structural support for that overhead spring, and the back of the trailer since the door doesn't provide any strength.  If the door had pins or something to engage the opening when closed, that support probably wouldn't be needed.

    Colorado,
Some of the trailers like the one pictured have a spring assist on the ramp / door, so you don't have to fight the whole weight of it. I am not sure how this is done - guess several ways - but should not take up any room on the sides of the trailer - maybe springs underneath, or cables above, or hydraulic / electric?
Guide boards and tiedowns for your wheels and tailwheel might also be a good idea, but you can add those yourself.
Hoping you find what you need and post photos for us.

    Thanks again tcj,
Kitfox is just too proud of them for me to order any.
Besides that, Kitfox changed the wing incidence on different models, so I'm not too sure how accurate this would be on each plane. I like the idea of making your own.

    Thanks tcj,
That's just what I needed to know - now I can spend a few $$ and start making the hangers, as soon as I can find the correct polyethylene or some other type bushings. I have to match the ID of my hanger tubes to the OD of the bushings.
My flap spar tube is 1.5" OD aluminum, and my aileron spar tube is 1".

Don't assume just because it has a fold down door the opening is full width.  Mine has the fold down ramp door, but it the opening is still has a 3" piece on each side for the door to snug up too - that 6" is a killer on an 8' wide trailer.
Measure it twice before you buy.  I only got this one because I needed it quickly, and it was in stock, otherwise I'd have looked for an 8.5 foot wide one with a full width back door.

Thanks all for responding. I think the picture that 'Boat' posted shows what Ed says about increasing the inside width by using a fold down back door. This is the arrangement Mr Sorenson uses per his Barnstormers ad and links. And it does have a people door to get access to the front of the trailer without having to crawl under the plane!
