I've never owned a vehicle that shined.

    Fly inverted.
I'd go with a matte paint on the cowling and cover the top of the instrument panel with something that doesn't reflect either.

MTV over at back country made a great point. The glare shield (dashboard) finish probably makes much more difference than the cowl top in regard to glare in the sun.
Ive never had issue with my yellow (mostly) glossy cowl.  My glare shield is a black Naugahyde type material in the yellow plane.  The Mangy has grey carpet on the glare shield.

If I was worried about speed I would not be running 27" tires but considering I am down to 75 or so there is some meat left on the bone. I am not trying to go 120 to a pancake bfast at the next town over like most people do. More interested in the climb and power off aspect of it. Think 40 less horsepower full loaded at 12,500 on an 11 hr 550nm trip over nothing but miles of trees and giant rocks and ANY benefit even if it's just in your head is nice to have.

I put them on the underside of my horizontal about 2" in front of the elevator hinge and it was a big improvement in elevator authority.  I put them on the top of my HH wing and included the flaperon in the chord so they are about 7" back from the leading edge (I agree with Leni, probably too far back).  I could not tell much improvement in stall speed but surprisingly had improved roll authority.  Well worth it in my MKIV Avid with very limited ability to move stick left with heavy clothes on.  My Avid plus has a lot more room but I still like the added roll authority.  I later tried them on the underside of the outer 2' of the wings at about mid chord and found no noticeable affect.  I then tried them on the underside of the wings just at the transition from the spar to the rib to see if it would give me some extra speed but found no noticeable difference.  I pulled all of them from the underside of the wings  but left them on the tops.

I had a 1978 Chevy Blazer with the Bronze and White paint - The hood glared so bad that I painted two wide stripes of flat black lengthways on it, leaving only about 6" in the middle and 3" on each side the original Bronze.  Never had a glare after that.

My brother had a trucking business for many years and it seems all his trucks were white except for the hood.  He would always paint then flat black to cut glare.  As far as the scallops on the wings goes, it's not to hard to do other then time consuming. I did two sets of wings like that so far.  I used rosin paper and rolled it out on a plywood platform 4'X16" long.  Swung the arc using a long stick with a nail in it at the right point that was tapped into the plywood and a pencil held on the other end to do the marking.  Cut it out and used the small cut off to lay out for the blue masking tape as seen in the first picture.  Then I taped the bigger piece of rosin paper to the blue tape as seen in the second picture.  Masked everything, shot white paint on the taped edges to seal the tape, and then shot the red color (third pic).  Fourth pic is the result.  Fifth is the Kitfox that's still waiting patiently for me to get back to it.   Jim Chuk

If they fit Kitfox, then why wouldn't they fit an Avid?

You could shape them with the foam, tape them on and see if it gains you anything.  I remember seeing a thread on another site a while back where they were made from modeling clay just to test how much speed they would give.  If I remember right it did not give much in terms of speed.  With the undercambered wing you gonna hit the wall anyways on the speed.  The thing I would be interested in is how much more climb you get by cleaning it all up!

    Couple follow ups...
Just be aware that not all yellow fuel hose is Tygon® F-4040-A. You really need to verify via the outer markings. One other yellow fuel hose that is the exact equivalent in formulation and performance to Tygon® F-4040-A is Excelon PVC Fuel & Lubricant Tubing.
Also, while they are marketed as different products, it seems that the terms 'Tygon®' and 'Tygothane®' are often used interchangeably. Again, there are different formulations of clear 'Tygothane®' tubing and, of course, they differ in recommended application. For the last sight tube replacement in my KF4, I used clear Tygothane® Ultra tubing, and the clarity and embrittlement with E-10 exposure suggested it realistically was still an annual replacement item. Hopefully, the Tygothane® LP1500 will fare better.

I agree with that statement, but from the aesthetics point of view go for it they do look nice, how much do they cost is it worth sanding down and shaping blue foam then glassing them to save 50 bucks,

How fast you gonna go in that Avid?

    Go with white.
Im putting yellow on the top of mine.  Like was said, you don't have a flat black hood on your car, right?

Good stuff. I have always used the blue line that CPS sells. Hopefully you don't run into too many walls with the SLSA thing.

    Strut cuffs
I've heard some good results from cleaning up the area around where the struts attach to the wings. I was just looking around Murle Williams site because he adds things from time to time and noticed he had some. Anyone tried making something like this? I shot him an email asking about an Avid application. With the additions of the big tires, shocks, baggage area....it's time to focus on cleaning her up some.

Thanks Ed I like how it came out. I just never did much with the fuse and cowl and they were both in relatively good shape compared to the rest of the airplane and I just wanted to get it into in the air.

    Joey,
I think the scallops on your wings and tail look good - Always thought it would be a PIA to make all those round curves on fabric with ribs.
I think I am more comfortable making straight lines - my curves could look like a crooked road sign!

Thanks for the thoughts. I kind of like how John had his done. Keep in mind I sprayed my fuse with latex paint to cover up some bad stuff on it 6 years ago with plans of it only be temporary. I have some plans for a new fuse down the road so I will probably just leave it alone at this point.

I just painted the hood of my Pete white, it was maroon with the clear coat missing.  The really interesting thing is that darn base coat reflected more than the white, that I treated to slightly flatten it.  That said my cowl on the MK IV is dark metallic blue and have never noticed a glare that has bothered me unlike the Pete with that big big flat hood.  I am thinking that it will make little difference so pick the one that tickles your fancy best.  2 cents worth

I don't have any issues with the top of my old cowling being a flat red, and I have not had any issues with my MK IV cowling being white.  I do think I did prefer the flat color a bit more, but neither was enough to be a real serious game changer for me as long as its not a highly polished or gloss surface it shouldn't be too big of a deal.

I have been using the yellow tygon for years in my gas powered models airplanes and as for replacement fuel lines on lawn mowers, yard equiptment tractor etc.  I have never had a leak or split with it.
