He fought it off for a long time and he hadn't been on here for a long time as well. He certainly had a love for building and talking aircraft. It would have been fun to see his projects completed by him... Maybe someone else will...

Yes, it will work great for you.  I had a Revmaster with a plug installed at the factory without thread lube and pulled the threads.  I took it to a speed shop for the repair because I wasn’t comfortable boing the repair myself.  Bottom line, it worked great with no future problems.  Just had to install one in a friends 912 engine block the other day.

There was an interesting video on youtube where a guy does pull tests on aluminum.  Amazing how much more it took to pull out the helicoil threads compared to just taped threads.  JImChuk

Sad for sure.  Always difficult for the family to get rid of stuff as well.  And not get robbed in the process.  Just yesterday I was at a friends place to figure out what he had and to help his widow dispose of it.  Nearly finished Murphy Rebel that he put years into.  At least he enjoyed working on it.  JImChuk

Bad news guys I talked to someone today who said ED had Passed away.   He was a fun guy to chat with on this forum and I am glad I got to know him.  I loved buying airplane parts from him they would always show up in an old rickety vacuum box of some sort. If anyone is interested in any of his projects I believe there is an EAA guy over there trying to help sell things. Im not sure how you would go about contacting him.

Can you use a helicoil repair kit to replace a stripped plug in a cylinder head? I should have explained it is on my 503 rotax.

I might be able to give you a few pointers, depending on the avid you have.
All of the avids are homebuilts, and as such are fairly unique, meaning mine is different than yours, and pretty much all of the others. Figuring out how to help would be based on the serial number, which would tell me more about the gear release, and the propeller/engine combination.  Heck, with the tail number, I can probably pull the engine combination, maybe even pictures.
I say this, because on build, I added the kitfox leading edge to the wings, as well as covering the upper leading edge with thin ply, to add more of a contoured shape.  This gets rid of some of the dragginess, and shortens my takeoff and landings.  I also have a Hirth 100 hp pushing a three blade warp prop, and in testing, I have *no* problems getting off the water at gross weight. My power-on stalls are also pretty hard to manage, as the power tends to offset the stick. I do have a youtube video of water operations- I watched a lot of them when building mine- had to move the bilge pump outlet upwards, as the original location was underwater (as shown on some of those videos) !  You can search "Granger Lake Splashin" on the utube for my video. Avid catalina for some of the others.
So, let me know what you have, and I can probably help some. If you've never flown a pylon-mounted engine, be aware that adding power tends to push the nose DOWN, which can be exciting during a go-around. I found that doing a lot of water landings made landing on runways a lot simpler, just hold it off as you do skimming the lake, and ease off power.  Mine isn't *as* draggy, but it'll still glide like a brick if you don't push the nose down on power loss/drop. If you're used to side-slipping in a crosswind, you'll risk dragging a wing float- I find it easier to crab, then kick. That's where the skimming practice really helps.
    And, ENJOY!

Hi! my Catalina has gull wing doors. Here are a couple pictures (including one in back of my home where I intend to play a lot :-) . I have not flown mine yet, but it's getting close. It's ready to move to the airport and put the wings on. I need the phase one flyoff moved to my area. That is in process with the FAA now. I need a condition inspection since I am not the builder, and I need to do a W&B once it is together. Mine has a blue head 582 which I just fired up a week ago and runs fine. That's a relief. I have re plumbed and re wired the entire aircraft. It is pretty much ready to go and I am getting excited.

Welcome! Good luck with your new aircraft, the Catalina is a great aircraft.
Let me agree with 1avidflyer that car engines often cost you 75 to 100 lbs of useful load, CG headaches and lots of fitting problems. The 912 variants are fine engines, and so too is the 670, with 92 HP and easily fitted 582 mount. The nice thing about the 670 is it weighs only about 15-20 lbs more than the 65 HP 582, but matches the smaller 912's in HP. I swapped my 582 for a 670 on my Avid Mk IV, and it was all upside. Great engine, lots of power, starts easily and fairly low fuel burn.
The 670 is also about 1/2 the cost of a 912, esp from Rotax Rick. Less than $6K complete.
AS far as modifying the Catalina, not too many were built, and the design works very well, so I bet few folks tried to modify them as you want to. But hey, our hobby is exactly what you want to do, so have at it!
Thinking about what engines to try, there is a good Yamaha Apex following on this site, and the weight/power of the 4 stroke with electronic Fuel Injection is eye watering. Might be worth a look, it seems you can get 130+ HP out of them with a pretty reliable kit.

Sadly, it seems that not many people on the site have experience with the Catalina.  Myself included.  As long as I'm here though, I'll make this comment as far as engines go.  I'm a real fan of the 912 Rotax.  I'm flying with an 80 HP in my Kitfox 4 and have the 100HP in my new Kitfox 4 build.  They are very nice engines and pretty light for the power they produce.  There are more used ones out there all the time, especially as people move to higher HP Rotax engines.  I would really look into them rather than an auto conversion.  In the end you probably wont spend any more money, and will have a lighter better performing airplane as well.  JImChuk

I ended up not going with an electric jackscrew for the Catalina landing gear. After studying the manual I could not see how the helper spring was going to work very well with its weird angle change over the throw of the handle, and the builder never installed the spring plate to the floor of the plane so I did not have a mount for the other end of the assist spring. So I had an idea. I ended up using a used but not worn out landing gear bungie cord to provide the assistance. It works amazingly well! I am actually blown away. With the wheels off the ground, the lever is EASY to move from wheels down to retract and back. It will be no problem whatsoever in flight which was a big concern for me. It's so easy to move back and forth that I see no reason for electric retract. The assist is very strong and consistent because the percentage length change in the bungie is minimal so the assistance force throughout the range of motion is consistent and comes from the right angle throughout the range of motion. The bungie is completely out of the way when floor boards and seat panels are installed. A picture is attached.
I also completely rewired the Catalina and everything works except the tach which I need to sort out. Replumbed everything replacing all lines and leaky valves and primers. Started the engine for the first time since I have owned it and it runs beautifully (except for tach not working) And last but not least finally got the registration transferred to me and am in the process of getting the operating limitations updated for phase one fly off from my local airport.
So after years of inching along the ball is really starting to roll downhill towards the finish!

    NEWBIE
29AUG2023- Hello, I purchased my Cat in 2016 from a guy who got it from another guy. It has the wings complete, the stick controls, fiberglass nose, and landing gear. I have some questions for the group
-Has anyone modified this beast with suspension?
-Has anyone built their own gullwing doors?
-Does anyone have any schematics for alternative engines such as the Viking Honda?
I'm an igloo-dwelling, beaver eater up here in broken-toe Ontario Canada, and always wanted one of these critters, alas 911 struck and everyone bailed out of building airplanes so I built a Murphy Maverick which I just sold. It's time for the Cat to get built.

  21. meglin added a post in a topic Best prop for STOL, Jabiru 2200

The main way to increase thrust at launch is to increase the dia. That's why we supply Jabiru with a 2-blade propeller with extra strong 63.8" diameter saber blades. It provides optimum start, flight, noise and engine cooling. At the same time, we have made several dozen wooden propellers for Jabiru to improve launch performance while maintaining cruising speed and low noise. We had to use a special blade profile. The diameter was increased successively up to 68.5". We did not need high speed, our airplane did not fly faster than 200 km/h (124 miles per hour). The propeller continued to "whisper".

I shipped a single Kitfox 2 landing gear  from Mn to Or a couple of weeks ago with UPS.  The box measured 14 x 14 x 33 and weighed 10 lbs.  Shipping cost was $92.53.  The guy at the store redid it three times because he couldn't believe it was right either.  It was right, but for sure seemed all wrong.  JImChuk
