You must be a trusting guy.  I try to run all of this type of payment through my credit card because if the billing party messes up I have some recourse.  With direct debit, once the money's gone it's harder to get back.  Also, you may be able to get cash back rewards for the charges. Anyway, Avemco should take a hit for that kind of shoddy service.

I hope you get the new instrument and probes going quickly.  It's great when you can eliminate instrument problems and get onto to the two-stroke tuning proper.

    150F per the Rotax manual.

Well, not really.  In one you've got copper/chromel, the other is copper/alumel.  Each has a different Seebeck voltage.  This is the reason extension wire exists.  At the instrument, the terminals should be isothermal and have the errors calibrated out.

Can you tell if the black and white wires are type K extension wire, or just plain wire?  It should be color coded yellow/ red (Chromel/ Alumel). Otherwise it creates additional thermocouples at each junction and throws the results off.

Does your thermocouple wire run all the way from probe to instrument, or is it extended in some fashion?  What you're seeing matches my frustration with the original Westach instrument which led to a change.  If the calibration worked and the readings were repeatable, you could mark the analog gauge and move on.  The problem is you have to be able to trust the readings and the original gauge never got my vote of confidence.

I use the InReach SE from DeLorme.  The big advantage is it allows two way texting in addition to providing the tracking info.  It's helpful to be able to receive emergency messages when you're out adventuring as well as being able to send them out.

It was left to the builder to close them out how they saw fit.  Mine were left in the factory profile (not squeezed) and closed with foam and epoxy micro slurry.

Larry, did you install one of the new ad/content blockers?

Not to go too far into the politics hole but... Sen. Chuck generally has never been interested in anything that doesn't hold potential for getting his sound bites on TV.  He's the poster child for knee jerk politicians everywhere.  ...but you knew that living in his great state.

    Larry,
When you're done, it would be great if you could do a cost breakdown of your project (unless it would scare you to actually put it in writing).

If you want a laugh, check out the marketing video Icon did with Bloomberg: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-09-17/the-icon-a5-is-the-closest-thing-to-a-flying-car-you-can-buy-today

They're unapologetically quoting $250K fully loaded.  I really wonder who we're going to be sharing airspace with if they're successful.

What Leni said ^^^^  It's only too slow if it shakes or quits when you close the throttle on final.  I really like the positives of the clutch on mine.

Yeah, don't lose any sleep or go on a guilt trip.  I recently sold an older car, very clean, low miles, no rust, decent runner.  Buyer went for a good test drive, came back and we settled on a price of $1,500 so I didn't have to look at it in my driveway anymore.  Sold as-is with a Bill of Sale saying as much.  Sure enough, three weeks later he was on the phone wanting me to split the cost of a repair.  Thought I was doing him a favor letting it go at a very fair price.  Live and learn.

Very nice, Larry.  When does the new hangar/ workshop go up?  Can you get Google to image your new strip while it's all nice and green to make it easier for us to snoop?  It looks like there's plenty of camping space there when we have the first fly-in.

Kudos to you, Mark. Way to get on a repair! I can sure see the merits of a polytone finish. With Aerothane, I'd still be thinkink about how to blend it in (though not as much on the bottom of the fuse).

Thanks for scanning and posting.  I took your files, re-collated, flipped and compressed it into one document.

  21. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic Mounting ELT - Antenna

    Ed,
Yup, you're correct: the new ones broadcast on both frequencies.  Maybe they kept the 121.5 to give the CAP cadets a fun activity to pursue at the big fly-ins.

    Larry,
Are you going to hook up a GPS to the unit?  If so, what?

  22. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic Mounting ELT - Antenna

Theory would say that mounting the antenna inside a steel frame would create apertures for the signal to radiate out of. This could create an odd shaped radiation pattern or possibly attenuate the signal to a large degree. Mounting outside with a good ground plane is the safe choice, though many have reported acceptable performance mounted inside. I like Ed's solution, with mounting under a Lexan turtledeck - a good compromise.

While almost anything in radio is possible, I believe it's not a common practice to share an antenna with com and ELT transmitters. You'd have to have some good blocking diodes to prevent blowing the output transistors in the non transmitting radio. Best to plan on two antennas.

As Ed states, it's recommended to separate the antennas by 30" or so assuming you've got a 121.5 unit. I'm not sue about the 406 ones. If they're close together you've got two dipoles that again interfere with each other and produce odd radiation patterns. That said, mine are located about 12" apart and I haven't noted any issues.

  23. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic Let's see, non-flying,,, Windows 10?

I hear Windows 10 is pretty solid except for the incomplete Edge browser, but I have no compelling reason to upgrade from 7.  I'll wait to decide until the free upgrade program is about to expire next year.

i found the "Get Windows 10" tray icon/ popup really obnoxious though, so i got rid of it.  It's easy to do.  See the following link and scroll to the bottom on how to remove.

Those still running XP still are asking for a complete zombie machine takeover unless you've done the registry hack to make it thing it's a point of sale terminal.  That's the only way you'll get any security updates.

  25. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic ELT Recommendations

I believe the requirement for an ELT with a remote switch and indicator is included in TSO-C91a which became a requirement for new installations after June 21, 1995.

    See: http://www.aviationpros.com/article/10389148/new-emergency-locator-technologies

In any case, if I were doing a new installation I would put in a 406 MHz unit for sure.
