The starter hit the firewall, that is why I had to make the dimple.  I believe the newer rotax oil tanks are taller than the original ones.  If I needed to make more room, I would perhaps raise the cross tube that goes over the top of the tank as you can see in the picture I posted showing the back side of the firewall.  If need be, some gussets perhaps to add enough strength.  I think I have at least 1" from the tank cap and the bottom of the cowl, and also think I have the older shorter tank.  I'm not near the plane just now to verify this.       I could have raised the back of the cowl as well without it blocking any of my forward visibility.  My firewall could have been 1-1 1/2" higher before it would have been higher than the front of the cowl with my line of vision.   If you look at one of my flying videos on youtube, the camera is about at my eye level.     JImChuk

Funny song. May even have some truth to it. :-)
I'm kind of a fan of older Irish music, and this is from one of my favorite Irish groups.  Never heard this one from them till today.  I thought it was funny, maybe you will as well.  Played it for my wife, and she laughed.  Not sure why she had that kind of thoughtful frownish look on her face after a while though.....

I think it has to do with how the oil tank mounts.  I did mine a bit different, and removed  the Kitfox oil tank  brackets.   I think the newer oil tanks are a bit higher than earlier ones.  This approach may force you to shorten a new tank.  Not positive, but something to check before you get to far if you go the way I did.  JImChuk

I'm not surprised.  Nothing new under the sun it seems.  Even the wing folding Avid started using was done 50 or 60 years earlier.

Just my opinion, but if you really wanted to get less adverse yaw, I would do what TJay did and copy the Kitfox 4 mixer.  The engineers at Kitfox "probably" know more than we do.  And it's been a proven design for more than 20 yrs.  Or just learn to use your feet.  Adverse yaw isn't that bad in the early models.  Maybe if I had the welding skills TJay has I would look at it some what differently, but I would leave it as is and learn to love it.  YMMV.  JImChuk

Larry, not arguing with you at all, just saying what I thought was the case.  I think I was Brett's first customer.  I brought a fuselage down to him to repair when he was setting up his shop.  As I understood it, he bought the stuff from Jerry ?? who owned Avid in Idaho.  Jerry (I can't remember the last name) lived in Alexandria Mn.  The guy who worked in the Avid shop in Idaho came and worked with Brett for a week or so to get things set up.  (not Steve Winder) His name as I recall was Leo Sells.  I met Leo when I was there at Brett's.  I thought Brett just called it Airdale instead of Avid.  Not sure why.  Anyway, that is how I remember it.  Maybe I was miss informed on some of the facts.  I know you have been around Brett a lot more than I have, so if one of us is wrong, I would guess it's me.   JImChuk

    latest Kitfox ski flying video
Here is a link to a video I put up of some flying I did a couple of weeks ago.   Surely not the quality of many who are much more skilled at editing and such than I am.  Anyway, if was fun for me to fly it, and learn a bit more on how to edit things.   Obviously have a good ways to go on the editing stuff.  :-)   JImChuk

I changed from the regular F7 bellcrank to the modified F7A bellcrank on one of my Avids, and I didn't think it made very much difference.  Still needed to use your feet.  TJay on this forum changed out the mixer controls on his Kitfox 1 to the Kitfox 4 mixer setup.  Maybe he will chime in on this topic.  JImChuk

For sure not asking you to do something dangerous, but it would be interesting to see the whole bottom of the wing with yarn and no VGs.  JImChuk

Just looking at and thinking about this some more.  I wonder what a  video would have looked like with yarn in place, but not having the VGs there. How much does the twist in the wing effect what's happening?  I don't know, but like you say Chris, I'm out of my league, but it's fun to think about..  JImChuk

No Brad, Avid will not be relocating to Chisholm any time soon.  This whole deal is kind of funny.  I don't think Mendick and company ever got the jigs and such from the last guy to own Avid.  (Brett Mckinny).   Not sure if this is a scam or what.  I don't know who really has the rights to Avid if there actually are any at this point.  I was tempted to call just to see what was the deal.  Best to keep my nose out of it though.  JImChuk

  18. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Do you guys with Rotax 670 run clutch's in your gear box?

I'm not sure on the 670, but often the idle jet is a bit rich on the 582, and a smoother idle is obtained with a leaner idle jet.  JImChuk

I should keep my nose out of this, never having run a hacman,  but it seems to me that if you can only adjust to a leaner condition, then it makes sense to start off a bit on the rich side.  JImChuk

  23. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Looking at fabricating allumiium fuel tanks.

Aluminum tanks were used in both the Avids and Kitfoxes, and they developed cracks in the tanks from the twisting of the wings.

  24. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic New member from Canada Kitfox 1 rebuild project

Hi Dave,  Welcome to the group.  The Kitfox 1 is a fun airplane.  I had one a few years ago.  Here is a link to information Kitfox has put out on service bulletins and such.  Lots of good info there.  TJay on this group has done lots of things with his Kitfox 1, maybe go through the posts he made discribing his build.  He will probably make a reply to you as well.  The search feature in the upper right corner of the page is quite helpful.  I would also look through the Kitfox 1 section on this forum for more posts relating to the Kitfox 1.  A friend of mine flew his Avid A model (the plane that the Kitfox 1 is a copy of) as a single seater.   He put a joystick in with a big S curve in it on the passenger's side, and used the outside rudder pedals.  It worked.  I flew it once as well like that.   JImChuk
