  1. congrats Paul,,Will you be making the first flight in the new bird?

Thanks guys, yes I will be making that first flight. There is nothing like it and I recommend it to anyone that is capable to do it safely. The first flight in my Q-2 when I completed it is still clear in my mind from 15 years ago.

  2. At the time I had to have mine looked at we didnt have a DAR and had to rely on the FAA inspector. The plane had a previous airworthiness but during my condition inspection after the rebuild, all I had from the previous owner was a copy of the AW. The IA I had doing the inspection sent off for a replacement and the FAA decided they wanted to come and inspect the plane again before issuing it... I waited 2 months for an inspector to get the time to come check it out before I lost my cool and called up the FSDO and got the head lady on the phone. I told her what was going on, and that it was BS that I could fly an aircraft that had a current inspection and a current AW just because they wanted to send an inspector down instead of just issuing the replacement. I told her she had 48 hrs to get the AW paper to me or she was personally going to make me an outlaw as I was not waiting one minute longer to fly my plane.. The next day a very cool (although now unfortunately retired) FAA inspector drove down, spent 30 minutes going over the logs and pictures I had put together documenting my rebuild, spent maybe 5 minutes looking at the plane, then handed me the coveted pink slip. That afternoon I was burning sky with it!

Good luck on getting you inspector down to look at yours, and I hope when he does show, he is as cool as the guy I got to meet!

    :BC:

I have been through this twice before with my Q-2, the first and then an engine change. Both times with the local FSDO and they were timely and helpful but when I requested the inspection this time they said that their superiors now would not allow them to take the time (about an hour) to do the AW inspection. So here I am at the mercy of a DAR that I will have to pay a hefty fee but that's the way it goes. Good thing I am not in a hurry.

  3. Do you have a time frame you are looking at for first flight? Keep us posted!

    :BC:

I am hoping that it will happen in the next 30 days but I still have not managed to get the DAR down to look at my plane. Not a big deal, windy winters here really will keep me from getting much time in until late spring anyway. At least I have the Q-2 to fly this winter!

  4. Congrats! Be sure to get at least a short video of your first flight just don't let it pressure you into flying before your ready.

Thanks Joey, I am not in any hurry to fly the Avid. This is my second homebuilt so there is not much pressure on this one. I am looking forward to flying it up in Idaho this summer.

  5. Here is a pix of my MKIV waiting for the DAR to come look it over. I am hoping to get that done before the winter winds set in. The 912A runs great after its long wait to go to work. I first flew a factory demo in the with Stace Schrader in the early 90's. Just added up the hours I put into the building process and was suprise to find that it total up to about 850 hours. :)

    Paul

Guess I can't get the px to post and don't have time to mess with it now.

  7. How many hours do you think that it would take to cober &finish a fuselage?

    Thanks,

    larry

I just looked back to my builders log and I had about 50 hrs. in covering, taping and through the polyspray stage. You can plan on another 10 to 20 hours for painting. This does not include the tail feathers. If you do not have any experience with fabric, taping and etc. you might spend double that time. Have fun with it, I found the fabric work to be a lot of fun and rewarding. What system are you planning on using? I used the Polyfiber system but I think that they will all require about the same amount of time.

  8. No, not regularly, just covering my a** for when away from my u-haul-'em cans. My 912s has used AeroShell Sport Plus 4 since new, which I intend to continue, but I don't mind switching my 912 from Mobile 1 Racing 4T and paying a bit more if it protects from 100LL better or extends the oil change intervals. Not sure what Kitfox charges for the oil delivered (didn't see it in the online catalog, need to call), but I saw SkyGeek has it for $96 + shipping. Last year I ordered a 16oz. bottle of RunUp additive direct from Decalin Chemicals and either they were out temporarily or goofed because they sent me a large 32oz. bottle for the lower price. Good thing it never goes bad because that will probably last forever!

I just ordered in a case from the local oil distributor for $103.00 and it saves on the shipping cost. I did find it for about $87 + shipping here

    airplaneoil.com

it ended up at around $108 to my door from them.

  9. Thanks Paul - Anything helpful = I thought from the photos that yours was a nose-dragger. I have bought several builders manuals for KF and Avid, but yet have no drawings or photos of frame attaches or nose gear pictures or any info on construction, materials, etc. I have my own designed, see my latest post on page 3 of

C-Box ratios where I wrote to Randy. Always like to see what others have done, and maybe make changes to my design to make it better, if that is possible.

Whatever, whenever, you can post something it will be appreciated - or anyone else that has info on nose gear.

I don't know if you have seen this.

  10. Paul,

Can you post some photos of your nose gear mounts, etc. I am scratch-building a nose-dragger.

    Thanks, Ed in MO

Ed mine is a taildragger but the MK IV was build so that it could be either one. If you are wanting pictures of the frame structure I can take some but it will be a couple of days before I have a chance to get back to the hanger.

  11. Last year I bought an Avid C model with stol wings and Rotax 912 engine. I bought the plane in Germany and took it by road home to Denmark, where I live. My plan is to build new Heavy Hauler wings for it. Howewer: I have run into some problems with the local authorities. They claim that my planes serialnumber: 468 is to low for the plane to be fittet with Heavy Haulers. I have never heard of this before. If this in untrue, I need some good arguments, or preferably, some kind of documentation that can convince them to let me go ahead with the project.

I will really appreciate if you guys can help me with this.

There are some old Avid brochures on the Avid_flyer Yahoo site that may help in the files section. Here is a link, you may have to join if you are not a member already.

  12. what im doing on my C is: new aluminium firewall in one piece, longer enouth to go on the belly for about 20cm and cover the botom skin that going until pedals. it is a lot lighter than old sheet galva metal

That will be lighter. Will you be using Fiberfax or something else to protect yourself in the event of a fire in the engine compartment? My Q-2 has an aluminum skin, then a layer of fiberfas and then the composite firewall.

    Paul

  13. I found a good pic of the belly on the yahoo site.

I ended up building a four piece pan that will attach next to the fuselage bottom. The pictures may be hard to see here but I will post a couple.

  14. I found a good pic of the belly on the yahoo site.

Thanks, that is a good find. I now have a starting point. I will post some pictures as I work thru this.

  15. OK I guess that my age is catching up with me but I am getting ready to install my belly pan on my MK IV with the the 912 so I open the manual for a little guidance and found the one liner "install the belly pan". With the earlier models, tail dragger this will be enough, one flat piece of metal that mounts flat on the underside of the fuselage. With the MK IV there are the support tubes for the nose gear that monkey up the operation.

So I am wondering how other builders have approached this installation. The other thing is that the firewall hangs down about 4" below the fuselage so did you attach the belly pan to the bottom of the firewall and warp the metal over the top of the nose gear bracing with the two pieces supplied or attach the belly pan in four or more pieces to the bottom of the fuselage or are there other options that I am not seeing. If anyone has a picture that would also be very helpful.

  16. anyone have any good suggestions or recommendations on how to fix leaking 13 gal fiberglass KF tanks. They appeared to have been sealed with Kreem but after sitting for a month or so with fuel in the they have begun to leak. I was careful not to use any gas with alcohol in it but who knows. Anyone had and luck with the various sloshing compounds out there.

    thanks,

    EG

Take a look at phenol novolac epoxy at this site. It will make your tanks ethanol proof also. Give these folks a call they can help you to decide which way to go. One heads up with this stuff the mix is critical so follow the direction to a "T" I used it on my tanks before installing them. Most "slosh" type sealers will end up coming off in time. This is the same epoxy used to coat chemical tanks. Take some time doing some research be fore you decide. There is my 2 cents worth.

  17. Deleted - Got it figured out now with some help.

Please have patience with antique members.

Now, dang-it, I can't find the file that dholly or someone posted on Harry Ribblet's analysis of the Eppler High-lift ribs, and the chart and drawing for the modified rib which gives better cruise.

Anybody know where it went - seems like it was seperate from regular posts and in a place of its own?

    Ed in MO

ED, I found a hard copy in my files with an address at the bottom. Here is a link, pages 1-9. Hope this helps.

I don't know where it is on this forum but if you Google Riblett I think that you will find what you are looking for. I thought I had saved a link to it but I guess not.

  19. How about a direct-drive VW? I think that it is cheap, long lasting, reliable, 4 stroke, and about 120 lbs, similiar to the HKS weight???? Several HP versions available. PRSU would add 40 lbs tho - so that would make it nearly as heavy as a EA81, but you should not need a PRSU???

    Ed in MO

I had a Revmaster (VW) direct drive in my Q-2 years ago. It wieghted 200# even, when I pulled it out to install the Jabiru 3300. I know they claim they weight 170# or so but it just isn't so.

  20. If you use the Poly Fiber system you will need to use epoxy primer. They sell an epoxy primer that they recommend. I used PPG's epoxy primer because it was available locally. Cost wise about the same when you add shipping into the mix. I can only guess that Stewart's is much less fussy about primers and under coats but it would be best to ask them. Stewart's will need to be kept warm so it doesn't freeze which can be a problem this time of year during shipping.

  21. This is the setup I decided on for my Avid+.

I really like the looks of your airbox. Is that something that you built? I was wonder if you have any more detailed px of the inside and outside. Guess I should have started and other thread for this.

  22. The lexan that came with my kit is very old and I'm afraid that it is going to crack just trying to unroll it (been packed since 1986) so im looking at what to get I was wondering if this PETG stuff may be a good option. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PETG-Plastic-Sheet-060-x-48-x-96-Clear-Lexan-Acrylic-/360431555926?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53eb651556 has anyone actually used it how is it different from regular lexan?

    -Robert-

Mine was setting around almost as long and was fine. Save the money.
