Thanks guys, yes I will be making that first flight. There is nothing like it and I recommend it to anyone that is capable to do it safely. The first flight in my Q-2 when I completed it is still clear in my mind from 15 years ago.

Another MK IV is born today
Well after a year and a half of building my Avid received it's pink slip today and is ready to fly! N130PS is an airplane.

I have been through this twice before with my Q-2, the first and then an engine change. Both times with the local FSDO and they were timely and helpful but when I requested the inspection this time they said that their superiors now would not allow them to take the time (about an hour) to do the AW inspection. So here I am at the mercy of a DAR that I will have to pay a hefty fee but that's the way it goes. Good thing I am not in a hurry.

I am hoping that it will happen in the next 30 days but I still have not managed to get the DAR down to look at my plane. Not a big deal, windy winters here really will keep me from getting much time in until late spring anyway. At least I have the Q-2 to fly this winter!

Hey Joey nice pictures. How do you post those to this forum? Only thing that I found was adding attachments but it would be handy to post some large photos like yours on occasion.

Thanks Joey, I am not in any hurry to fly the Avid. This is my second homebuilt so there is not much pressure on this one. I am looking forward to flying it up in Idaho this summer.

    Waiting for inspection
Here is a pix of my MKIV waiting for the DAR to come look it over. I am hoping to get that done before the winter winds set in. The 912A runs great after its long wait to go to work. I first flew a factory demo in the with Stace Schrader in the early 90's. Just added up the hours I put into the building process and was suprise to find that it total up to about 850 hours.

I just looked back to my builders log and I had about 50 hrs. in covering, taping and through the polyspray stage. You can plan on another 10 to 20 hours for painting. This does not include the tail feathers. If you do not have any experience with fabric, taping and etc. you might spend double that time. Have fun with it, I found the fabric work to be a lot of fun and rewarding. What system are you planning on using? I used the Polyfiber system but I think that they will all require about the same amount of time.

Hey Joey, nice video. What camera are you using, I like the fact that it doesn't do strange things with the turning prop.

I just ordered in a case from the local oil distributor for $103.00 and it saves on the shipping cost. I did find it for about $87 + shipping here

    airplaneoil.com

it ended up at around $108 to my door from them.

Ed mine is a taildragger but the MK IV was build so that it could be either one. If you are wanting pictures of the frame structure I can take some but it will be a couple of days before I have a chance to get back to the hanger.

There are some old Avid brochures on the Avid_flyer Yahoo site that may help in the files section. Here is a link, you may have to join if you are not a member already.

That will be lighter. Will you be using Fiberfax or something else to protect yourself in the event of a fire in the engine compartment? My Q-2 has an aluminum skin, then a layer of fiberfas and then the composite firewall.

I ended up building a four piece pan that will attach next to the fuselage bottom. The pictures may be hard to see here but I will post a couple.

    Mk IV belly pan
OK I guess that my age is catching up with me but I am getting ready to install my belly pan on my MK IV with the the 912 so I open the manual for a little guidance and found the one liner "install the belly pan". With the earlier models, tail dragger this will be enough, one flat piece of metal that mounts flat on the underside of the fuselage. With the MK IV there are the support tubes for the nose gear that monkey up the operation.
So I am wondering how other builders have approached this installation. The other thing is that the firewall hangs down about 4" below the fuselage so did you attach the belly pan to the bottom of the firewall and warp the metal over the top of the nose gear bracing with the two pieces supplied or attach the belly pan in four or more pieces to the bottom of the fuselage or are there other options that I am not seeing. If anyone has a picture that would also be very helpful.

Take a look at phenol novolac epoxy at this site. It will make your tanks ethanol proof also. Give these folks a call they can help you to decide which way to go. One heads up with this stuff the mix is critical so follow the direction to a "T" I used it on my tanks before installing them. Most "slosh" type sealers will end up coming off in time. This is the same epoxy used to coat chemical tanks. Take some time doing some research be fore you decide. There is my 2 cents worth.

I don't know where it is on this forum but if you Google Riblett I think that you will find what you are looking for. I thought I had saved a link to it but I guess not.

I had a Revmaster (VW) direct drive in my Q-2 years ago. It wieghted 200# even, when I pulled it out to install the Jabiru 3300. I know they claim they weight 170# or so but it just isn't so.

  23. wypaul added a post in a topic Which cover/paint system to use?

If you use the Poly Fiber system you will need to use epoxy primer. They sell an epoxy primer that they recommend. I used PPG's epoxy primer because it was available locally. Cost wise about the same when you add shipping into the mix. I can only guess that Stewart's is much less fussy about primers and under coats but it would be best to ask them. Stewart's will need to be kept warm so it doesn't freeze which can be a problem this time of year during shipping.
