Thanks for all the info.   I am getting symetrical flaperons and lift/jury struts along with the wings.  Leni, from what you are saying, sounds like my mixer is essentially a KF 4 mod. at least in function.   With any luck I'll have a couple weeks of ski flying yet this year.

Well I called Ivo on Monday and said go ahead and send me a new set up. They called me today to let me know that my box showed up!! I ran the tracking and it was scanned in from my town on Friday the 17th and made it to Long Beach today. NO idea where my box was from Dec 27th to Jan 17th but I find it ironic that on Thursday I really made a stink at the place I shipped it from and I also called both local post offices since they pick up from that place as well and the box shipped on Friday. Glad Ivo called me and they knocked a chunk off the price because they were able to use my front plate to mount a new motor to. I had the OLD style motor that they don't even make parts for anymore and it was 10+ years old.

Some of you already know this but I am fortunate enough to have grown up around Dean Wilson and I have family friends who send pics now and again of what he's up to. These pictures came from a guy named Jack (Logtruckdriver) and Dean and him were nice enough to grant permission to post them. I don't know details but hopefully Jack will jump in as I'm sure folks will have questions. What I do know is it based off an A model. It has a really long skinny wing and is powered by a 40hp continental that was on Deans first plane WAY back in the day. Check out those struts and flaperons!

    David -

I just had another thought... there is a KF3 builder a few hours from me that I know used KF4 wings. I believe he finished his plane and flew it for the first time last year. He is a member on the TeamKitfox forums under name 'GT280flyer' if you want to search up his posts or PM him.

I know for a fact that it is a one off mixer that John installed under the seat.  He was the first one to make a mixer that had the correct differential in it, but in doing so, you now have to pull the bolts and manually fold the flaperons.  The mixer works well though!  There are a few other one off thnigs on that bird that improved the overall flight characteristics.

Small world, eh? Now you guys have an excuse to get out of the house every week 'cause your new building buddy needs a hand, hehe.

BTW, those were the rib tail reinforcements I made for my Avid Mk-IV. At the time, I did not extend the metal through the cap strip onto the interior rib web. Honestly, after seeing just how easy it is to snap a rib tail off, I probably would make the extra effort and do it today. Certainly would make it a much stronger structure overall.

Obviously, the KF4 rib tails and flaperon hangers are completely different. I've attached the Service Bulletin from Denny showing their solution and a pic of my old KF3 showing the root rib with retrofitted reinforcement in place.

There was a change in the flaperon hinges and mounts with the KF4 - You will have to modify in some way if you plan to use your old flaperons.  The modified setup, whatever you do, must match up the control tube to the support in the turtledeck.

Funny thing tho - When the new wing came out on the 4, the flaperons were changed from flat-bottom to symmetrical, and listed as "new and improved"  - later on, I believe on the KF7, the flaperons were changed back to flat-bottomed, and listed as "new and improved" - Some KF owners were not impressed with the advertising....

He has been slammed enough here, I will try and reach him again and will let you know if we have come to an agreement, If anyone else is able to do the same let us know, I have not had much luck reaching him so far, but there is no use trying to air it out here, I always had better luck reaching him by email, but have not been able to get this offer to him yet. I will let you know if I can bring Airdale back when I have reached him.

This is on my Avid Mark IV Heavy Hauler (about 1992 or 93 vintage).  This is a rebuilding project from an unfinished kit.  As I was removing the hardware around the engine to take it off the plane I noticed that it is about one inch off center to the left looking from the prop.  The engine mount came with the kit from Avid and the mount is built asymmetrical to make it off center.  I just did not expect it find an off center mounting.  I talked to a person who works on Rotax engines and he said he has heard of that arrangement. The manual does not address this point.  With the vast knowlede that abounds on this forum I am sure I can get confermation that this is OK.

    Thanks again,

You have a one off mixer that John came up with. It was the first mixer that gave it differential flaperons with 2:1 up versus down throw. Did you get the model iv flaperons too? Your going to like the Ifa, just don't expect it to be like a constant speed prop.

I don't think you will have as much nose down force from the wings as the undercambered ones had.

Your cruise should be higher with these wings, and the IFA will increase that even more.

I hope you have read all the threads about how to prevent your IFA from destroying itself.

Best wishes for "Frankie", and let us know what results you get.

Well, I just put money down on a set of KF 4 wings. Need covering and a few repairs.  Hopefully it is the quickest way to get back in the air....... However, they are going on a KF 3 Fuselage.  Any thoughts about the downside of this monster?  I understand the KF 4 tail feathers are larger, and the mixer is different.  I believe I have a KF4 mixer.. roughly, bu not sure what other consequences might be waiting to bite me in the butt.

Since the prop was "delaminated" in my last mix up, I'll be biting on an IVO IFA.  What do you all expect my cruise will come in at?

    Hey Jon,

I'm building an Avid Magnum and I live in Pueblo West too! Small world! I'd love to see your aircraft. I'll send you a pm with my info.

I have the plastic leading edge on my uncovered wings if you want to see what it looks like. I also have a fiberglass top leading edge that comes back about a foot on my wings, I think it adds a lot of unwanted weight and the fiberglass was a bit wavy too.

I saved a pic of someone else's aluminum flapperon horn covers. I will post it here for you, but I don't know much about it, it just looked like a good idea.

    See ya,

    Ron

I would have no problem running Waterwetter, in fact I have run it in the past with my off road rig. Since we idle in place a lot on some of the nasty trails I run it was nice to have a little extra cooling factor there. I personally didn't see too much difference but I was having engine issues that started just after I started using it. After I finally lost the engine and installed a newer one I also upgraded the radiator and just never used it again since I was staying cool without spending the extra money.

I've heard great things about the product from a good friend of mine that owns a race car business in Cincinnati though. He's the one that got me on it years ago.

I say use whatever works for you, like they say, "different strokes for different folk"!
