The oil pump has a VERY limited suction on it.  you should be able to install the oil tank up high on the firewall per the plans or use the newer KF oil tank that holds a couple quarts.  My cap just clears the cowling by about a 1/4".

When John Stoner was building the ribs for dakota cub he modified a few pair of vice grips to get into some tight corners.  He ground the teeth off both sides of the jaws, then drilled one side just enough to capture the head of the rivet.  It takes a couple practice rivets to get the vice grips set just perfect for each size your squeezing to get the set perfect.  He also put a jamb nut on the vice grip "lead screw" so once set for that length rivet, he could lock the nut down and squeeze away and never loose the setting when you flip it open.

    Jim,

The best excuse to the boss for being late that I ever heard was from my fellow toolmaker apprentice when we were in our early 20's - He said, "The reason I am late is because I didn't get started in time to finish on time to get dressed and get to work on time." The boss excused him! And, I think his first son was born about 9 months later!!

hey guys is the oil on a 582 gravity feed like it is on the 503. The reason I am asking when my plane sits on the tail-wheel, I level back to the fire wall to see where the bottom of my tank needs to be while on the ground or in a climb, that does not leave me much room for any size tank. Or am I looking at this wrong and the oil pump has suction?

    TJay,

You may be able to squeeze aluminum rivets with a modified pair of Vicegrip pliers.

If you decide to use pop rivets, use the shortest one possible, and install them with the tails to the top of the flaperon, and file the broken sharp end of the stem on bottom slightly.

I ran across this video while looking at some of the Doubliners vids on youtube.  They did a lot of great Irish folk songs/ ballads starting in the early sixties.  Song is from a time when most work was done by hand (and without OSHA in existence LOL)  If you move forward on the video  to 28:40, you should find the song.  It's about 3 minutes long and I thought well worth the time it took to hear it.  Here is the link (I hope)    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyBZl5qwQ_Q   enjoy,  Jim Chuk

Starting to rebuild.Took apart the really bent flaperon. Is there a source for the styrofoam ribs and leading edge. Setting up a hot wire and cutting them with a template sounds like a lot of fooling around. Thanks.

I have obtained a Fat Avid top cowl section, a Fat Avid dash cap and a MKIV cowl bottom and am attempting to fit it all together as a two piece setup like the original MKIV, not as a boot cowl setup. Has anyone set their fat avid up like this? If so would you take a few pics and share? I seem to be having some fit issues with the dash cap, windscreen and cowl top.
