I have wanted to build an Avid Amphibian since I first saw one, I never seem to be around when there is one for sale, or it happens to e as long of a trip as you made and my back doesn't take that kind of a trip any longer. From the pictures I have collected, including yours I have pretty well got the design down, its the fiberglass work I am having trouble deciphering, I have built boats and I have built tube and rag airplanes, Do you know how thick the fiberglass was on the bottom or Hull of your aircraft, the thickness on the top would help too, Being classified as disabled I have plenty of time to work out the math to design the aircraft, but there is very little information out there on designing an amphibian, any measurements that you felt like giving me would be appreciated, and a copy of manuals would be nice too, if you don't want to scan them, I would be willing to pay for copies.

The Yamaha snowmobile engines are actually getting more flight time, the 120hp and the 150hp, there is a guy offering a kit for the 150hp at a reasonable price. www.rotaryforum.com

Going to take a while for that - Do you know that after WW1, no jobs and depression - the WW1 Vets marched on Washington and the Pres (forget who) called out the active Army and beat and shot them?
Bad Shit for guys who risked their lives for the Country while the thieving politicians stayed home!

I know I should change that to an Iowa number, but that is where my office was when I was in Management for the Union Pacific, now its in the middle of a football field. Glad to here that the problem isn't me, I don't have the best luck with computers, hopefully it stays up for a while I missed out on a bit while I concentrated on my Buttercup and I have a lot of Catching up to do, I went through my scrap pile and I have a bunch of 1/2 X .035, 5,8 X 049 and 3/4 X.049, I think I should be able to do something with that but I don,t want to overbuild. If my memory serves me right the original was 5/8 X.049 but I could use a double check on that.

  9. akflyer added a post in a topic Hey what happened to my RPMs !

I have lived with the gas smell since I rebuilt my avid. Last week I pulled the header tank and resealed all the fittings and ran new fuel line. I have 100' of the bing blue line so I used it.. No smell anymore in the cockpit. I had put the system together using fuel lube originally, but I used the permatex aviation gasket sealer this time with much better results!

On the rpm... If your goal is stol, pitch the prop to what ever it takes to get 64-6500 on take off, if you can do that without going over 6800 wot straight n level. You may have to settle for 62-63 on take off to keep your egts in check duri g normal cruise.

That is true. I was wondering what my takeoff run was going to feel like. She jumped off ok. Then we scared up a few gators on the shoreline. Its like an African safari down here! Fun stuff. Love the fox.

But a big tw is on my wishlist regardless.

The problem is taking off sometimes if you can't get that anchor out of the sand I love my 8" wide tw. It makes those short bars and beaches much less risky.

Looks like a great day of exploring for you!

An old timer local cub driver said to keep the little maul tw for the beach. No brakes required when the anchor digs in!

Nice! You need the wide 8" TW from Matco if you are going to be landing that kind of stuff.

    Hi all,
I was curious if there were any more thoughts about fitting big bros in an Avid.  I'm in much the same situation, budget and height are at odds with each other.  I'm 6'3" and was urged to consider a fat avid.  A late model Kitfox is just out of the question right now.  843SG, did you get any numbers on fat avids or the "Airdale"?  I'm trying to contact Airdale directly, haven't heard back yet.
I'm pretty new to this forum, hats off to the guys who got this thing going it's pretty sweet!

  19. C5Engineer added a post in a topic Hey what happened to my RPMs !

First thing on your RPM...it will decrease when you climb...your loading up the engine like you are going uphill. In straight and level flight if you leave it wide open the rpms will build as the speed builds but it's not more than 3-400 rpm. You want 6200-6300 in the climb. This will give you around 6500 max in most other flight conditions.

As far as your exhaust smell it's not uncommon to suck it in from around the holes where the bungees are wrapped. If you have any light showing through there stuff it closed with some foam. With fuel lines in the cabin unless you want to put in the expensive heavy gates tubing the man perfume two stroke smell comes with the territory.

I guess it was a good thing I lost that 210 lbs I had been carrying with me, I would have never gotten my Avid off the ground

I'm using Pennsoil XLF with the injection. It's not so much a gas smell as a oily exhaust smell. All connections are tight and the motor is clean but I must be getting exhaust in the cabin some how. Not so much of a problem now it's still warm and I can fly with plenty of vents open but I need to get it sorted out before cold weather. I'm located at NC27 in Lenoir NC. Thx EG
