I may end up building a set of flaperons as they are tuff to find, their built pretty simple, aluminum skin over foam ribs and aluminum torque tube. May be able to get the brackets from Kitfox.

Cliff welcome to the forum. It sounds like you have plenty to keep you busy! Where are you located at? Once you get a little more comfortable with using the forum if you go to the upper right corner and click on your name and then "my profile" and then "edit profile" it will let you plug in your location which will show up when you post. There is also a button right at the top of that same page that says "change my photo". That is where you can upload a picture so that it shows up in the little box by your name when you post like the others that you see. Were always here to help if you have questions.

To post pictures of your project

    1. Start a thread like you already did
    2. Next to the Post button click the box that says "More Reply Options"
    3. At the bottom of where you type you will see a box that says "Browse" Click on that and go to where the pictures are located on your computer and click on what you want to up upload.
    4. Click on "Attach this file"
    5. You can repeat this process with quite a few pictures and when your done just hit Post like you did with your introduction post and we will be able to click on your pictures and see them.

    Cliff,
Welcome to the "Old Dinosauers List" of computers - I cant do much on the puter either, but this site is so simple, even I can do it - You can click on any members name and go to the part that says, "send them a message", or click on members list and pick the first letter of their "handle", and scroll down to find them and then do the same. For messages coming to you, look at the envelope at top right corner of homepage, and if you see a red 1 or 2 or such, then click on it to see a list of messages coming to you.  Click on a message to open it.
Don't worry - computers cant bite - they just make you frustrated!
I probably made this as clear as mud - if all else fails, post a message to Leni or Joey for help.

Mine is scratch-built too (not from a purchased Kit)- I have copied the form you fill out from the FAA site. I forget what the number is, but could find it for you.

Much better yet - You should join the EAA if you are not a member yet - They have a complete homebuilders' package ready to send for a small fee - It includes all of the forms you will need and the decal stickers for your "Experimental"

If you need more info, you can PM me.
Glad to have you here - ASK most anything here and you may get more answers than you dreamed of!

I will try to get over to Bob's house and take a look at his mod I and III and see if it will fit in there.  I dont think it will due to the way the mixer is constructed on the KF, but it just may work.  I will try and check it out in the next few days.

If you have pictures and make up a build log of some sort, and it has never been registered or issued an airworthiness before, you can also register as the builder and get a repairmans certificate for it, so you can perform your own yearly "condition" inspections.  Same thing as an annual, but in the experimental world, its called a condition inspection.

Looks like your figuring out the forum as you got your first post in the right place!  Welcome aboard here, I hope you find it useful and easy to navigate.  As always, if your having trouble with something, drop me a line in a private message and myself or c5engineer will try and help you out.

Yes.  Get the paperwork kit from the EAA.  To register you have the option of "built from parts".

I know of several (including mine) being built by this process.

new to forum and computer challenged
First attempt on this forum, I frequent a skydiving forum but rarely post. I have 2 Avid projects, one is previously flown and has all the paperwork in place, almost ready to fly again. The second is a collection of parts with no paperwork. I have done alot of work to it and plan to build it as a MK4 with extended speed wings, kitfox 4 droop wing tips and a zero time 582,and Cbox. I have a build log and a million pictures of the work I have done so far. I bought alot of parts off Barnstormers and locally. My question is, can I get this thing legal?  I am a private pilot with a couple of thousand hrs, currently own and fly a Kolb (which I didn't build) and a Cessna 206. I have been messing with airplanes my entie life but I am new to the Experimental category. Are there any old threads that might cover my question? Thank you , Cliff

Do you know if these will work with a Kitfox Mod 1 thru 3?

    Jim,
I've got the short fuselage, and don't have the big baggage compartment like the Fat Avids, so it is taking a lot more mods to get mine in trim with the Soob and nosegear.

I looked at my Kitfox 4 manual tonight, and their CG range is 10.2 - 16, for the same 51" chord. I don't know what would make the difference unless it is the Riblett ribs.
    Can anyone explain this?
    ED
edit:  so, if I use Kitfox 20% Forward and 30% Aft, I get 12" Forward and 18" Aft CG with 60" Chord.

Ole asks Lena to walk across the lake to the store to get him a pack of cigs.
Lena agrees, and asks Ole for some cash for the purchase, but Ole tells her to "Put them on account."
Lena respond "Ole, you tell me never put anything on account. You get mad if I put any thing on account!"
Ole responds with "Get on yer coat n go, time is a wastin!"
So Lena trudges clear across the lake, gets the cigs, and returns and gives Ole his smokes.
That evening, by the fire in their cabin, Lena, who had been pondering Ole's change of heart about running an account at their little local store, ask "Ole, why wouldn't you give me some cash for the cigarettes? I know you have plenty enough cash for just a pack of smokes".
Ole replied "Well, it is getting a little late in the spring, and there can be thin spots, and I didn't want to make a bad situation any worse..."

When they changed the wings on the KF4, they changed the aileron hinge mounts from the end of the ribs to two brackets above and below the trailing edge - the hinges were either a single piece, or two pieces spaced closer together, and the slot in the aileron was made smaller. For the bushing - I have no info that it was made different, but it may have been changed too.
I have the KF4 manual that shows the brackets.

This site has a lot of good features - I like the RANS planes, but prefer the side by side seating Like the S6, or the new larger model - All kits are getting a little too high for my pension pay.
Randy is a good designer - don't think I would change his rudder - and don't think he will.

Ed, wish I could fill in more on this but i can't. Just remember looking at a KF IV at the local airport once and his bushings were much smoother and nicer looking than the one's I have on my Avid maybe someone else here could educate the rest of us on this

    Hey Randy,

When I get home the 180 is going on wheels and the Avid is going on Ski's.  Depending on how much snow is at the lodge, I am not yet sure which one I plan to buzz up there for a few days of wood cutting.  Would love to get in there with the 180 to bring in some extra gas to have stashed for the winter flying.

That does make it a bit clearer. The way I read your first post was that the empty plane CG needed to be within the 11.185 and 16.5" CG envelope. That of course is not the case. That was the point I was trying to make. Also, I do realize that it's important to know the empty CG, as all other CG calculations can be figured from there by knowing weight and length from datum. This kind of points out the limit or negative aspects of typing messages verses conversations. In a conversation, questions can come immediately, and false impressions get straightened out right then (hopefully) Jim

    Hey Ed;

The story about the SE-YTA registration missing on the fuselage, is I should have pay more money for the stickers ) ) ).... it fell off that particular day when I was washing the plane, it supposed to resist all type of weather..... anyway, I order a new ones, but this time I pay little more, and they stay on ever since....

I don´t like the rounded ruder either, nor the fat avid rudder, I was thinking to start building the Rans S-7 Courier and keep my Avid, and one of the things I would like to order from factory, is an Avid Ruder Shape instead of the original

I will browse on the member list, I guess I have to get use to all the features this forum has...

    Hello Group;

I´ll start to make some of your upgrades to my plane, in this case Gap Seals; I decided to use Isolation for pipes and cut it with a sharp knife to give the necessary form. Any input from your side is appreciated.

I haven´t flown yet, but I will tomorrow and see if it´s any good.

Next project.... VG, I will put them under the wing at the wing tip; and do some test from there...

Great photos Randy - Sometime when I go to get my struts welded, I will try to get a photo of a bare WACO fuselage being built.
When I first met my welder, I asked "Why does everyone here call them Wahkos, when Williams Aircraft Company was in Texas, and they call the town WAYKO?" He quickly pointed out my ignorance by showing me the blueprints from WEAVER AIRCRAFT COMPANY, in Ohio or somewhere - not in Waco, Texas!
