That's what was on mine originally and they were only a 2 core radiator and I was never happy with the cooling. If your going to go in cowl, you need the 4 core (or 4 pass) to get enough cooling out of the size of radiator you can stuff in there. At least on the tight cowl that came with the c model. Maybe your subie cowl will have enough room you can put the larger 2 pass motor scooter rads in there.

Thats great dynomike, I would like to do it that way as well but I am running a TBI with a filter directly on top with no were to plumb the line in so I am going to get my brother to fab up a air/oil seperator and attach to the fire wall,at least it should stop it from blowing all over

Motorcycle Twin Radiators for cheek rads?
Has anyone explored the possibility of using twin motorcycle rads for cheek rads?
I am thinking that the rads for an 1500 to1800 cc or so might work for the Soob -81, and maybe from some smaller version for the 912 and 582?  Seems like the Chinese aluminum aftermarket rads are cheap?
    any comments?

    Hi Luke,
You'll want to look at the brake pedal / master cylinder geometry.  I believe the setup you have provides poor mechanical advantage and the brakes will be ineffective.  Have a look at the Matco Manufacturing website.  They should have some engineering data on how to set up your master cylinders.  http://www.matcomfg.com/

I failed to get any photos today of my Soob valve covers - I am not able right now to move things around and move the engines so I can get the photos.  Sorry - but sounds like Randy gave you the best fix for the oil problem anyway - and I will do the same if I ever have this problem.  Thanks.

    Luke,
I know you can go up to a C-90 without hardly any weight penalty - don't know weight of O-200, but it cant be much more - and betting less than Soob 81 with redrive - and parts are plentiful, but still costly, like all "real" engines - Hard for me to say that because the Soob and VW are both boxer engines, just like the "real" ones, but with modern engineering!  Ha!

    Thanks Leni,
That's exactly what I have been looking for - got to print and frame it - but printer is not working now for some unknown ailment probably concerning wireless which blinked last week.  Hope this one don't get away.

Thanks for the links.  Just spent a couple hours looking into it, and I think I'll be an Avidfox guinea pig.   It looks like putting the 600 on my new KF4 wings will save a ton of time and will be a better product than polyfiber.  Only problem is color.  I really don't want another coat of paint on the fuselage, but am not wild about painting the wings either.  My viable color options are cub yellow, a dark blue or white.   Am leaning toward white with blue flaperons to match current blue.  Already got rid of the orange tail feathers.   Maybe I'll just go with a circus clown approach and keep the wing covers on year round.

That's exactly right. I've been doing a lot of searching for info on small Continentals. I actually got a lot of my info from this page:

    http://www.bowersflybaby.com/tech/fenton.htm

I had actually given up on the A-65/75 for this very reason (hard to find crank shafts). The tapered crank engines need a serviceable hub, and they are getting more scarce. Once the hub gets a crack in it you have to find a replacement. I decided that I didn't want an A-65 if I couldn't find a flanged crank. If this one turns out to be a boat anchor, then I'll be back to square one. I was strongly considering an O-200 because all parts are readily available. I'd prefer the A-65 though because of weight and simplicity.

In any case, my plan is to nail down my engine for sure at the very beginning because this will have the biggest affect on W&B. Once I have the engine I can mockup the weight of all components on the airframe and do a W&B. This should tell me how long to make the mount. Then I can hang the engine off a 4x4 stuck into the fuselage at the calculated distance, and do one final W&B check before making the mount. I don't want any lead in the plane if I can avoid it. That's the theory anyway.

So - now we have concluded the TCDS is the requirement for certified planes -
What is the compass card reg for experimentals with no TCDS?  Is there a reg that says "you got to have it"?
That is what I was getting to.

Good point Leni. I think I'll keep the normal baggage area but try to make it lighter. I'm thinking of something like the "baggage sack" I saw in the Kitfox catalog.

I have not kept up with the market or availability of C-65 and C-75 parts - I know at one time there was an O-200 crank conversion for the C-85 because 85 cranks were no longer available - $pendy, tho!

  20. akflyer added a post in a topic Finally got my Ivo front plate

I never even bothered calling them last week, I just fixed it on my own.  I am going to file the shaft on a new motor and keep it in my plane parts in the tool bag.  I hate being without my IFA prop!

I have worn out a few sets of brushes, but thanks to ChrisB that should be a thing of the past soon!  I plan on having the Mercotac installed as soon as I get home in a couple weeks.  I will report on it as I do the install.

So far mine has been going great since they replaced the motor; they did it for free after the first one quit at about 12 hours and the second time at about 21 hours. I am suprised they didn't replace Leni's with only 25 hours on it.

I just had to put a new set of brushes in it 2 weeks ago have not checked the log book to see how many hours they lasted, but at least 200.  I had two sets of extras but could only find one set so I ordered a couple more sets of brushes last week and they had them to me in 3 days; at least they are responsive.

I love my IVO.. but they are raping us.  The new motor I had stopped working after about 25 flight hours.  I pulled the prop apart and pulled the motor out.  Turns out the front bearing in the motor can was toast allowing the windings to hit the magnets and stopped it from turning.  I got to looking at it and its just a 27 turn 540 size trinigy motor I can buy for 20 bucks and use a file or dremel to put a flat spot on the shaft for the spur gear... or use a hobby spur gear that has an allen set screw in it.  Long story short, I put it back together using the trinigy can and the windings from IVO as I was in a hurry to get back in the air and didnt want to take the 15 minutes with a file to put the flat on the motor shaft...

But if it goes out again, I would be looking at the local hobby shop for a motor, not calling IVO for one.

I would not be so hasty getting rid of the baggage area.. it is worth it!.. Maybe replace it with Kydex or something like that, but I would keep that area!  I would rather have it and not need it every flight, than need it once and not have it.  you only talking a couple pounds tops so you would do better by hitting the head before you go fly instead of taking out the baggage area in terms of weight loss

I was told yes.. if its required equipment, its required to have the correction card.  I just put a yellow sticky note over mine that said inop.. he didn't think that was as funny as I did.  Check the type certificate and see if its required equip. for the J3.

What I ended up doing was grabbing a correction card, put some random numbers on it and just personally knew that it was bogus and not to use the card   the IA wouldn't know the difference at a glance, they just need to see that its there.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions guys. Good to know about the extra webbing plates under the seat. I'm hopping that the lack of electrical system on this engine will give me a little edge on the weight situation. I'm going to try to eliminate every bit of extra airframe weight that is not absolutely needed. We'll see.

I pulled two cylinders on the engine this morning before the rest of the family got up. The last two look like they are going to be harder. I ate some breakfast, and headed into the shop to get some work done. I'll see if I can get the other two off tonight. The cylinders are no good, but hopefully the crank was protected enough to survive. I'll post some pictures tonight. I'm hoping I might even get the case split tonight if I have time.

Oh, I forgot to mention Ed that I considered the Subaru. Our family van is an 87 Wolfsburg Vanagon that I put a EJ22 in. It's a great engine. I don't know much about the EA81, but I'm sure it would be good too. The main reason I was put off by the Subaru was because I felt like it would take me longer to get the plane in the air. After installing the Subaru in the van, I know there is always a bit of tinkering to get things just right. The continental will probably take longer than the more standard Avid engines, but it is pretty simple mechanically and electrically.
