    Mendocino Coast flight
I flew 90 miles to the NorthWest today to a little airport called Ocean Ridge. The weather was perfect and no fog in sight. I met up with a buddy in an S7 along the way. After we left that airport we flew 50 miles down the Mendocino Coast where the Redwoods grow. Very nice flight!!

    Thanx for the info Chris,
Someday when I finish my wing I will measure mine - it may be close to your 43 1/2.
I don't recognize the RANS nose gear - is this pneumatic?  The one on the S6 was spring loaded, and also disconnected like Cessna when the weight came off of it, so it would not be crooked with rudder until has weight on the ground again.
Hoping for the recommended  10 to15% of total weight to be on nosewheel.
Please post more when you get farther along.

Thats a 600 X 6 on the front and 21's on the mains. i can go up to an 800 X6 on the front, but it is so much heavier and not really that much taller, that I think this will strike a good balance. I had to reduce the fork travel from 2 inch to 1 inch to make the fork work properly on the Avid. However, my plan is to run real low pressure to get good absorption in addition to the travel.
In a tri gear configuration the original landing gear worked great on the original lenght Avid and the plane could be easily balanced on the mains even taxiing, so the nose wheel didn't need to come into play much landing on rough terrain.
With the Fat Avid fuselage stretch the landing gear should have been made taller to compensate, but Airdale just supplied the stock Tri gear. To save money I put on taller tires to raise the plane because it was a lot less expensive and easier than making taller gear. Then I went ahead and adapted the Rans Tundra fork to The Avid because it can support a properly proportioned nosewheel tire to the 21 inch mains.
This weekend I am working on the steering linkage for it.

I think part of the increase in cost of diesel is mandated "green" additives and low sulfer restrictions.   I remember when I was in Montana in the early 70s we were getting fuel for .15 cents per gallon for the logging equiptment.  Times have changed..... Jim

    Folks,

    Help evaluate my pilot gear.

My goal is to be the bestest pilot in the world and as we all know, its the equipment that makes and breaks the coolest of us.
They say dress for success and its my honest ass ess ment that only the coolest can survive.

  14. EDMO added a post in a topic How to build an instrument panel mold???

I was shoveling the last of about 3000 lbs of extra rock off of my driveway today - now rested, and trying to think more clearly.
Now I get it - this is a FEMALE mold - about 98% of my work was male molds.
You can make a radius in the mold with plaster of paris or something similar like light Bondo, and sand it VERY smooth before painting, waxing, etc. - this will put a nice curve instead of a corner on your I.P.
    Here is one option:
First, before you screw your pattern permanently to the backer board, make jigsaw cuts to cut it into 4 pieces - use a filler or plaster of paris to fill the cuts - this is just an easier way to remove the mold, and maybe save your new IP from damage during removal.
paint a layer of resin onto the mold before starting to lay cloth.  Make sure you don't have any bubbles under the layer.
    Hope this helps a little.

I may have more later - right now I aM  exhausted and brain is dead -
DONT USE LEXAN - THE HEAT of the curing resin may warp it - I have warped steel before on auto panels -
If you are just making one instrument panel, then you will be molding the backside onto the support - you don't care what the back looks like.

I think Lexan could work. I'd try a small sample to see if the PVA causes any problem with it. I think the reason people like glass (usually fairly thick) is because it is manufactured pretty precisely to be flat (they want it to not be wavy when you look through it).

Edit: another thing you might want to try is a sandwich construction with a layer of CF then some core material, and another layer of CF. For an instrument panel, I would think some aircraft plywood would make a good core because it would be hard enough to put screws through. You could paint the edges of the instrument holes black. This should make a pretty light weight and strong panel.

Luke, thanks for the info I never though about using glass to lay up against this sounds like it may be a good route I will have to look around and see what I can come up with. I could take my mold apart and put the glass between the two pieces. see thats why I love this place so much never fails that someone will have an idea that I never thought of.

EDIT: a scrap piece of Lexan should work just as well right? it would be less likely to brake when the mold is in storage in case someone else wants to use it later on.

    Kenneth,

Great recap on the problems with Diesel engines... I usually get brandmarked a conspiracy theorist for saying that the price of Diesel being so ridiculous has no other reason than to keep the technology from evolving and properly developing in this country. There are way too many profits and kickbacks to be paid to car manufacturers who still build low torque, low power gas guzzler V8's and V10s.

For the longest time we lied to people about dirt particles and Diesel being worse for the environment. Then we started modifying European Diesel powered cars to have less than stellar gas mileage and finally we're arriving at Diesel selling for such high prices that the next step up is AVGAS. In Europe, Diesel is traditionally much cheaper and it comes as no surprise to see even fast and high powered luxury limousines and SUV's powered by the "stinky" stuff. Diesel catalic converters and new direct injection technology make the newest Diesel engines clean and quiet.

90% of Americans I have talked to about Diesel, associate the vehicles powered by those engines as "dirt machines", even though the only black and blue smoke plumes are emitted from trucks that would run on piss and frenchfries. Even the newer trucks have incredibly high heat cleaning cycles and I evacuated the truck shop I used to work at more than once for a W9 going into "selfcleaning oven mode".

My last BMW Diesel in Germany got me an average of 55-65MPG, asking for no service over a period of 17000 miles. Efficiency redifined for a guy who downgraded from a Super + BMW M5 with a sooped upy 500 horses and a official top speed of 192 MPH (tailwind, mirrors retracted) but I swear, it was worth it. The vehicle would easly go 140 MPH and after driving his 2013 185HP predecessor during my last visit, I could not tell I was sitting in a Diesel vehicle. Amazing torgue at incredibly low RPM and that tank needle barely moves.

Over here, we still teach the 3-5000 mile oil change (one of the biggest frauds in the world) and new technology is artificially kept under the carpet. Not only do we see the aftermath in less properly powered vehicles on the road, we also see the reflection of this stupid game in the prices of everything, as trucks still depend on this crap shoot game. Talk to any trucker about how they feel filling their tank for $500/ each pop, at an average 9MPG burn, depending on terrain and weight.

Diesel is to our automotive industry as Rotax engines are to our General Aviation pilot population.
A threeheaded monster nobody really understands.

    Back on topic, sorry...

This is the first time I hear of someone having a funky experience with AC Spruce. They can certainly do better than that and I would write an email to see if the case can't be escalated and solved to your satisfaction.

Hi Robert. I've made quite a few fiberglass parts using gelcoat female molds. The best success I had was when I used this stuff for the plug:

    http://www.fibreglast.com/product/duratec-gray-surfacing-primer

You need a gun to spray it though. It sands to a mirror finish, and works great with a little wax and PVA. If you use regular paint, be sure to put lots of wax on before the PVA.

Another option for an easy mold is to use a piece of glass.

Ed the distance from center of mains axles and center of front axle projected to ground and measured is 43 1/2". Weight on the nose wheel I cannot measure now because the plane is disassembled. The W&B measurements I did with the RV nosewheel would not apply because the RV nosewheel was so much further forward. next time I weigh it, it will be with the engine an inch further back and a different nosewheel location. I am excited to see how the weight and balance works out I think it will be nearly ideal. Here are some photos.

I guess if you're that far along already then go for it! What weight of carbon fiber cloth do you have? I sure wouldn't think you need more than 3-4 layers if they are laid up with the weave correctly. This stuff gets solid and stiff if you are using the correct resins and cloth.

I would personally think that it would be beneficial to paint the mold before laying down the PVA and wax. That way you could have just a little more to help you smooth it out. Paint and then sand some more. Trust me, if you can see something in the mold it will transfer to the final product.
