    Posting photos
    Hello forum
Please tell me the steps I need to go thru to place a photo with post.
The photos are in my I-phone.
I do know how to text or email photos from my phone and that is about the limit of my electronic skills.
I had my first could be fatal incident last Sunday in my Kitfox and I need to let others know so it does not happen to them.
    Thanks
    Herman

I would also like to place an Avitar photo.

It's scary as hell, isn't it, Joey.  I remember my first IMC very well too.

I also remember flying an Arrow at full power and slowly loosing altitude due to ice, in solid IMC over Cleveland, OH.  Chills thinking back on that one...

That trip was also my first crossing of Lake Michigan in a piston single.

First time in actual IMC today
Flew into actual IMC today on an instrument flight plan. Lots of work and very interesting when the cockpit goes dark as you enter the soup. I only got about 10 minutes with zero reference to the outside world. Not much but enough to know I never ever want to do it in an Avid! I have about 10 hrs now of the required 40 for my IFR rating.

  6. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic Grove gear geometry question

I would tend to agree with the idea that 3º of bend should be doable.  I had already straightened and twisted my gear (what I considered as an engineer) quite a bit - several inches at the axle mount point.  I was not concerned about having it re-heat treated, itself.  But, I was a little concerned about the strength if I used the extensions that I was going to build to raise the front of the plane.  I decided that the cost was worth it for the longer gear.  I think it was going to cost me near $1000 to send the gear to them to be heat treated, plus time and material to further bend the spring, then send it back.  I still needed wheels, axles and brakes, yet.  So-- long story short, for a few hundred more I got a new spring to my specs and sold the old spring for nearly the difference.

The alloy that these springs are made from (forgive me I don't remember - I think 7000 series?) is a heat treatable alloy.   It gains it's final strength from heat treating.

The blank is first cut to length, the gun drilling is done, then it is forged to the required shape, the spring is heat treated, final machining is done of the brake ports and axle mounts, it's sanded and then shipped.

The 3" was a total typo. It was meant to be 3 degrees. What they consider to be "slight" might be less than what I would consider to be slight. I think rebending the gear by 3 degrees wouldn't be too much but they might disagree with me.

I'm really wondering why they would use the treated aluminum if they are bending it and then having the reheat it? The properties of aluminum are such that if they do they might has well have started with something not treated and then worked it to a treated state....at least that's my take on it from what I understand. I didn't realize they were having to heat treat it at all after the shaping had taken place.

I can't understand why it would only have been a little more to buy new than to have a current gear leg reworked. Especially since they just raised their price about $500 on the gear in the past month, at least from what I remember it being when I looked at it in January for the Avid gear. I may be mistaken but I'm pretty sure it was only (cough cough) $1,700 for the Avid gear before. When I looked today it was over $2,200. That's a pretty big jump if it's the case. Not to mention that my gear are custom made and have the gun drilled brake line through the center of them and that's another $200 to bump the price.

I may just end up putting shims between the axles and gear to remedy the situation if I can't bend the gear straight.

I think you're correct with the no camber at max gross, but I was hoping to get somewhere in the ball park before bending, loading the plane, checking etc. That is if there is any way to bend it to that point in the first place.

I had a bent Grove spring that I was going to straighten and use on the Mangy Fox.  I decided to get a new spring that was taller instead.  But, the engineer I spoke with at Grove told me that anything more than a "slight bending" will require re-heat treatment of the spring to keep the strength of the aluminum.  Which means sending it back to them for forming and heat treatment.  Time and $$.  It was only slightly more to get a new spring at the taller dimensions I wanted anyway.

IMO, the optimum situation would be zero camber at rest, at gross weight.

Your notes were a bit confusing, did you mean 3" of negative camber or 3º of negative camber?  3" is quite a bit, more than what I would consider to be "slight".

    Grove gear geometry question
Now that I have had some time flying and working on the "new" plane, I am realizing just how far splayed out the grove gear is on both sides and more noticeably on the pilots side.

John told me that Robbie Grove told him to just stick it back in a press to change the geometry after he had a "rough landing" (whatever that meant). I can do that but I'm really needing to know to what point I should re-bend the gear?

Here is what I'm thinking. From the measurements I've taken on the angles it appears that the right side gear is slightly bend at the lower bend, as compared to the other side. The larger upper section is at the same angle once the fuse is leveled from side to side. Pointing back to just the lower radius not having the same bend.

Does anyone know what the camber angle was on their grove gear when installed or what it should optimally be?

Mine has about 3" degrees of camber on the pilot gear and about 1 degree on the passenger side. Both are leaning with the top of the tire/wheel combo inward. I know from the older taildraggers I've flown that most have an opposite camber built in but need to know what to rework this gear to so that it's at least closer than it is. I don't want to wear out just the insides of the tires and also know that too much camber can make for some crazy ground handling. I'm pretty sure that the difference in camber right now makes the plane load side to side just slightly when landing on pavement, but I'm more concerned about not wearing tires and trying to eliminate the torsion created on the axles since they are already bend slightly, which in my mind could lead to more since the leverage changes quickly with more angle.

I've already emailed Grove about this but haven't heard back yet. I couldn't find anything on their website stating geometry either.

50 bucks where? best I have found is $100.00 http://www.powersportsupply.co/products/Rotax-532-Engine-full-gasket-seal-set-ultralight-aircraft-engine.html plus 40 bucks for the ceramic water pump seal http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROTAX-582-BLUEHEAD-CERAMIC-WATER-PUMP-SEAL-/310652854218?pt=Motors_Aviation_Parts_Gear&hash=item48545a5fca&vxp=mtr which i think any machine shop should be able to fit up for me.

You know how it goes, trying to bank brownie points now for when the weather breaks. Heck, I haven't even seen my KF in months! Little jealous of all you guys in warmer climes. I know we're not alone but this has been the longest, coldest winter in a looong time here. It's too cold to paint and can't cover with Polyfiber products in a closed shop even if you can afford the propane, forget about working in an unseated hanger.

Layed out the floor grid this am, small bath so tile should go down quick. I've already moved all the electrical outlets and fixture boxes to accomodate the new tall double vanity, painted the ceiling and done 99% of the drywall work. Aside from the grout and wall paint, hooking up the new throne and sinks is about all that is left.

does anyone happen to have a length or even a part number for this throttle cable setup by chance? I want to upgrade to this system soon and am not around my airframe to get any measurements at the moment and was hoping to put in an order today.

    Thanks Robert

EDIT: just to be clear I'm referring to the one with the bell crank being located under the instrument panel.

  14. lostman added a post in a topic Those of you with dual wing tanks, lets talk plumbing to the header?

I never realized that my header tank was a short piece of spar before. Now that it's been mentioned I see that, but just never figured out where it came from. I thought maybe mine was something John had made up but evidently someone built a few of these and they are out there.

I still don't get why there is an issue with a dual tank system not venting as long as the tank itself has a vented cap. I've flown quite a few planes that are only a single tank and they don't have a problem with the system when vented properly. Just me not understanding the issue I suppose.

Jim, looks like some of our ice right now.  I thought as warm as it has been the ice would be geting thin already.... but its almost 48" thick here.  I guess its the first year I can remember that we have had less than 12" of snow on the lakes so they froze DEEP!

Headed up to the lodge.  Talked to Juli yesterday and she said that there is a group up there now doing lots of fishing.  They puled some monsters out yesterday and lost one that was too big to get through a 10" hole in the ice.  We will probly just stay one maybe two nights.  heinz in here from Swizerland and want to meet the baby so I gotta bring her up there

We have daylight til after 9 pm now so grab some air and go for a flight!

Its a beautiful blue bird day, 20 degrees and no wind.. what more could a guy ask for

Didn't get any use out of the wheel yet, it's for an avid I'm rebuilding. Wasn't all that good a deal, had to rebuild it. Other than it having a better tire on it than stock, I have almost as much into it as a new one... No free lunch as they say. Jim Chuk

Brendan, I will be ordering one of the new controlers and testing it out.  The Vision X lights draw less than an amp so it should work GREAT!

Nice work Doug! I don't see anything wrong other than the little corner pieces you mentioned weren't there yet so it must not be too obvious at all. You know how these things go, if you make the mistake it sticks out like crazy to you but others can't see it.

Maybe now you can get it finished up and fly some more? At least if the weather cooperates that is.

Brendan, do the new 48 LED lights work well for a landing light or would they be more appropriate as a taxi light?

Not to steal this post but what "about silica free antifreeze and distilled water" ? I have an old 0 time 532 that I'm planning to use soon until the budget allows for a 582 and it has the old style seal. what should I do to make it most reliable? It has never been run before but has sat for 25+ years should I tear it down and replace the gaskets/ seals anyway? what about the seal. I don't want to put more than I have to into it because I would like to replace it anyways but I do want it to be safe though and this post caught my attention.
