I think I have seen copper elbows with beaded ends for hoses.
They taught us in Aviation school that aluminum tubing was better than copper because it weighs less and does not vibration/work harden and fail like copper and soldered joints - I have seen several planes over the past 20 years that have used copper without any problems.
You can bend aluminum and use a beading tool to make the beads - there goes more money!
One of my books had a chapter on rads - He says we don't need the large hoses that a car needs for stop and start driving in traffic - recommending having aircraft fittings welded to the rad, and using -12 hoses - more money spent - never did figure out how he was going to connect them to the engine tho

well he is only full of shit on a few things... like no motorsport vehicle using the same system... except for every snowmachine, 4 wheelers and side by side that I have seen.  They all run a stator to charge and yes, it does put out  AC, that is why we run the regulator / rectifiers on them.  if the lithium has a built in charge system, then he is full of crapola as well as it should take care of over charging the battery.

I had an original piece from Dean Wilson that was pieces of copper tubing soldered together from straight to angled pieces to get the shape you need and on each end was a small piece of wire wrapping around the parameter and soldered on to make a lip for the rubber hose to go over and make a tight strong seal. hope this makes since - straight pipe -45*-straight-45* etc

after 2 months and lots of emails and calls they did refund my money but still say the problem is my plane although i've put 5 hrs on it since with no problems and the plane has not fried my radio gps or misc instruments. They basically say that the electrical systems we use are old and out dated and that nobody uses them any more and we should not use anything but a lead acid battery for the 2 stroke engines. I personally believe their battery will work fine and that I just got a poorly manufactured one. My frustration is more with the company than the product. I just wanted to get a different one and move on but after dealing with the customer service and taking 2 months to get anywhere I'm going with a different company.  here is a bit of info I received from their lead engineer

"Hi Robert, check out the attached sketch.   If the wiring and equipment is right, it may work, but magneto charging systems are not ideal which is why no motorsports/powersports vehicles use them anymore.  The other concern with the magneto charging system is the battery is a major part of the scheme, for without the battery acting as a large capacitor bank, the output would not really be DC. "

We checked and all matches up with the schematics and also checked the output from all 3 places they requested while running at 3000 rpms and all checks out good.

"A lead acid battery is the best option for your design, for a lead acid battery is very different than a lithium battery.   A lead acid battery has a higher resistance to charge / discharge current, so it naturally limits both regardless of what the charging system is doing.   Also, a lead acid battery doesn’t heat up during discharge like a lithium, which will also work better with your charging system."

I take it earth X is not standing behind their product..  Care to elaborate on what they have been telling you?

Well after all the mess I've been having with earthX i refuse to use their products for any reason and am back to the drawing board. I'm looking at these ones from crazed pilot has anyone had any actual real world experience using one with the 582? I got the engine changed over the weekend and went to a keywest regulator as well now I just need a good battery in the system. Currently don't have electric start but am leaning towards having a battery that will work with one in case I add it later on.

  11. amienoel added a post in a topic anyone fly or have flown a kitfox lite?

It is a bit heavy, but not more than the other UL that I have. It is about 40 lb over. The 377 just didnt get me what I wanted so I put the 447 on, I have a 503 fresh and ready to go but thought I would try the 447 first. I have a 60" GSC 2 blade on it. I have played with the pitch several times, no big difference either way except cruise and the darn EGT temps! I it to turn 6200 to 6400! either way it climbs out good on a clear day that is not totally saturated. But at the higher RPM I dont like where EGT run. If I load it up a bit while in the air they do come down, or if I put a half degree more pitch in it they run nice. Timing and jetting is correct. I made the mounts so I could fit the 447 and B box. Had to make them just a bit taller to clear the mount. I do know the GSC unload more than others in flight.
I have flown the hi max and N3 pup, this one out performs them both in all aspects.
When I have it pitched for 6200 tied down it does the best climb and cruise and EGT look good.
This plane is NOT hard to handle on the ground like the AVID flyer I had.
I would also like to put the wingtip strobes on but the wing ends have no place to mount them, it is just covered right at the end of the rib. Stand offs or wingtips would make the job better.
The other thing I like about this plane is it handles a bit more wind and is very sensitive on the controls! If the wing pitches it corrects very fast!
I also can get it in and out of my short strip! No problem landing in either, cross the tree line, hard slip and drop right in and grease it in! Lots of leg room to compared to the avid!
I am just doing small things to customize it to be MY PLANE It has custom doors but I dont like the way the hinges were made. Very flimsy.
I need to get heat hooked up soon too! I will fly all year as long as I have room to push snow and hope we dont get a bunch like last winter!! I ran out of room to plow it!

That looks about how mine are routed and I have 175 hours on them and they are holding up fine.

    Leni,
What was the short stub for? Was it like a barb to keep the hose on?

Not sure if I would use them, its a pretty sharp bend.  Water flow likes gradual sweeps for best flow and less turbulence.  I used 3/4" copper 45° fitting with a short stub soldered into each end.

I would be temped to get an aluminum tube bent to go in there.  Its lighter than the radiator hose anyways, but I am not a 912 guy, I am a screaming dirty 2 stroke using kinda guy

I stripped back the outer sheath a bit to get more of the red wire sticking out.  it will work fine only wrapped around one plug wire, but then you cant do a mag drop check.

This Is what I've got now. I started with the fiberglass on the exhaust and a piece of firesleve on the hose, that lasted about 10 hrs. I added the extra piece of firesleve on the exhaust and it's been on there for about 20 hrs now but their still wearing more than I'd like. I just put a bead of silicone between the two firesleve's and I'm hoping that wont cause the hose to rub on the ring mount.

I'm tempted to try having a 1" tube bent up to fit through there

Has anybody used these nylon 90° fittings in there radiator before? What is your experience with them? I am working on a new cooling system for my avid and want to utilize these, I just don't know if they'll hold up due to the water temp. Thanks, Bryce

Dimi, With no load the engine is going to fluctuate considerably. I've wrapped mine around one lead and have never had a problem with it. Good luck, Bryce

I don't have a picture Travis but it is very tight fished thru the motor mount and the exhaust, which I wrapped and also put fire sleeve on the 1" hose where it all but touches the exhaust. I just followed the pictures in the MK IV manual.  If you don't get any pxs from others I will try to get some pictures for you.  It does work, but it looks like it should go some where else and there just isn't a good option.

Hey Leni, that makes sense. He was a smart guy to realize who might end up building his planes. Guess I'll think on it a little more, but it helps a lot to get feedback from others.

Does anyone have a photo that shows how the 1" coolant hose is routed to the water pump around the exhaust and through the engine mount? I'm having a clearance issue on mine in several places.
