The media blows everything out of proportion - all we saw here was that the entire state of California was now flooding after a drought, and showed pictures of houses falling into the ocean.
Same way with the Ferguson riots and looting and fires - If the media would have stayed away, things would not have been so bad.  They didn't broadcast the true facts about the shooting, but gave the troublemakers lots of publicity.
I was in LA when the Lakers riots happened - Being from Alaska, I did not bring my .44 or .45 with me to USC housing - I had two little girls with me and could only arm myself with a steak knife and a butcher knife taped to the end of a pole lamp, while police were arresting armed criminals just below our window, and they were burning buildings 2 blocks away - it was on TV all night while they burned and looted and I watched it from our balcony windows.

Yeah, I was in L.A. the week of the 'severe storms'.  Living in Illinois and Florida, and having spent a lot of time in Texas, I was trying to figure out what they were talking about.  All I ever saw was a vigorous sprinkle....

We get two or three days of rain in Los Angeles and they think it's Noah's flood... You should have heard the TV news chimpanzees screaming about "severe storms", and water damage and sandbags and all of it. One reporter out in the field actually had to cover her cleavage because of the "extreme weather".

Speaking only for the LA area, we need ten times more rain than the "torrential downpour" we got last week. Maybe other parts of the state got too much, and had real storm damage... my sincere condolences and best wishes for the people in those areas that suffered any damage.

Cool video and music Joey - Have you been able to measure the tail yet?
With all the rain in California I thought maybe you were shopping for floats!

I like the "no paint concept", but Oratex 6000 might end up costing more than that -TJay, you already have the fabric, so that should lower your cost even more.  Then, your only money-saving option is going with the standard dope instead of doing it in Urethane.

I see someone on Team Kitfox figured it would cost $6100 for materials if I'm remembering right. I think one could do it with poly fibre and uncertified fabric for 1/3 of that. Jim Chuk

Way to go Randy!!  You never know what the result of a project like this will be, but it looks like the parts came together pretty good!  It does sound like the ASI is a bit optimistic, or maybe the Never exceed speed is going to have to be watched.
We'll work on refining things after the holidays.  It sure is a good feeling to have it fly so well.  Great Christmas present.
Thanks for being the test pilot Randy.

I replaced my rudder tail light with an LED strob tail light from Z Tron labs.  It fits the standard mount, is self contained and the strob flash patterns are programable or can be synced with your other strobes if you have a trace wire.  Google them.

It's Alive!  And It Flies Great!

Winds died down today so I got a chance to fly Jack's plane.  Started about 3:00.  Tied the tail to my truck and gave it the break-in run-up progressing up to full throttle for longer times each run.  After a getting it up to a two minute full throttle run with everything in the green I decided to give it a go.  The plane flies great and handles just like an Avid.  I took it through progressively steeper turns and dutch rolls; it handles just like mine.  Stalls were straight ahead with no fall off on either wing.  You can hold the stick all the way back and it just sinks and drops the nose a little as it picks up speed and starts to fly again.  It seems to be pretty fast compared to mine with a fixed pitch prop; probably due to the leading edge cuff and the 850 tires.  It was showing 120 mph on the Avid ASI and about 110 mph on the MGL but about 90 or a bit more on the GPS.  I will have to explore that more.  I ended up with about an hour on it before the light was almost gone and the low cielings with snow pinched me out.  I could not find my camera so had to land and find it, then took off for a quick circle just to prove it made it into the air.  Pictures are not good since it was getting pretty dark and the camera exposure was long; it made for blurry pictures plus it looks a lot lighter out than it was.

Good job Jack, you have a great plane!

    Patrol
    Hello all,
Sorry I have not been more attentive here; spare time's been eaten up going the scratch-build route on a bearhawk patrol (2-place).  But you guys still rock and you even have  a section for non-avid interests!  So here you go, for anyone who's interested.  I'll subscribe to this so hopefully if anyone chimes in I'll be able to respond!

    Carry on...

Yeah right about costs - I would go with at least one Kitfox tank - depending on how far you want to fly before fueling - If you are using a nose tank too, then that would be a total of 18 gallons with one wing tank.  When you get my age, 4 to 6 gallons is about the limit before a piss-stop!

I hope you are planning to get a fresh kit of 9460 ($100) to glue your wings - those kits are only good for about 2 years.

ah I don't want aluminum tanks I have had them in every other plane I have owned/built and never once had an issue but the way it sounds in a kitfox, no thanks. I really do like the plastic ones that wingtanks.com sell but they are more expensive than two from kitfox. I am trying to keep the cost of this thing low. (yeah right huh)

TJay,The measurements I gave are for my FG tanks - I don't know how the aluminum tanks compare - maybe you should measure them?

oh good then I should be ok I have 34 inches between ribs 1 and 3 if rib 1 ends up right next to the fuselage butt rib. I will not know untill I rig the wings and set the number 1 rib. all I have done so far is clamp the butt rib up there and do some rough measuring. but if the tanks are 33.5 I have plenty of room to work with. thanks.

    TJay,
Combining posts about wing tanks with wing building thread - My FG tanks vary from 33.25 to 33.5 inches across - distance between hanger ribcaps is 34.5 and distance between actual hanger rib centers is 35.5 - Some of the manuals talk about putting a .125 thick strip under the two adjoining rib caps to make a ledge to add a .125 sheet of plywood over the tanks - and others like the Avid Magnum use a fiberglass sheet over the tanks. My FG tanks just have a false ribcap glued on the center of the tank top and bottom to support the fabric. Donno what the aluminum tanks instructions say to do.
Also, when you install the root rib, it needs support between it and the aluminum tank to keep the fabric from bending it, since the tank eliminates the original angled braces - perhaps you could add a sheet of .250 plywood to the edge of the tank and glue some wooden dowels or blocks between that and the root rib for support? But, put some holes in the plywood for your fuel fittings.
Be sure to scroll back up and read my earlier posts.

  24. akflyer added a post in a topic No snow in AK yet.

The shallow lakes are froze up, but there was open water on the lake 2 weeks ago at Wik lake where the 180 is hangared.  Since I took the pic we got a whopping 2" of show, then it rained for a week afterwards.  Not sure what the snow is like at the cabin now, but I will find out the 30th when I get.

I am assuming your still on wheels?  I had to go to ski's till I get some 1 1/4" wheels and brakes for this new gear.

It's been a long time coming Jack, awesome to see you got the magic pink slip!  Hope the weather cooperates and you get to put some hours on it soon!  This has been my worst year I can remember as far as hours in the air goes.. bad weather and family obligations have conspired to make me a grumpy guy.  She looks great!  If we get some snow I will drop by and check it out in person soon.
