Yes it is a Stratus.  One of the earlier ones that Reiner put out.  I am currently in Anchorage AK but will be back in Ketchikan AK later in the week for a day or two and could see if there is any information on the Starter you could use.  I may have a set of straight exhaust pipes but would suggest trying noise canceling headsets before adding the weight of glaspaks.

    BLACK ENGINE?
Dave Johnson, rest his soul, painted all of his Subaru engines and redrives solid Black - You cant hardly see anything under the cowl and hard to spot leaks, loose wires, etc.  I don't like Black engines or mounts - You can spot cracks in a white mount a lot easier.
I don't want my engine and redrive to end up looking like a spotted cow if the new paint comes off after I repaint it a light color with a rattle can -
What is my best option to clean it for painting?  spray with what kind of thinner? Paint stripper?
I don't want to damage the belt on the redrive.   I have removed the alternator.
     No sandblast either!
I know to cover the distributer and carb ....Oilpan and rocker covers are no problem - I can always pull them off later.

I'm guessing you were flying the Challenger, hadn't heard that you finished the Kitfox yet.  In fact, haven't seen any progress reports in a while......  Nice pics by the way, how high were you when you took them?  Jim Chuk

Is that a Stratus engine?  I was just asking Reiner Hoffman about what kind of starter Stratus used, and didn't get an answer.
I have a Dave Johnson EA-81 with stock geared Soob starter (heavy) and Holly 5200 carb and straight pipes but plan on 2 glaspaks because I have nosegear.

    Hello,

New here but responding to the muffler question.  900 hrs on the muffler in the attached photo without any problems.  The heat muff provides plenty of heat and defrost for temps to 10 degrees.

The Stratus mufflers were supposed to add hp by having opposing pulses providing added scavenging.  I had two straight pipes before the muffler and believe I did gain a little by adding the muffler.

Keep in mind that added items not needed affect performance.

    Regards,

    Mark,
Check out this ebay ad for a PPG 5 gallon fuel tank # 111694908113 - Kool, with sight gage too...
but you might find something like it locally and save shipping.
Still, a lot cheaper than the $168 + shipping that Kitfox gets for their 1 gallon plastic tank!

Looks like I completely missed the boat on this one - Missed the first photo showing the Allen heads were just at the edge of the plate - The KISS principle just to file, grind to clear the heads, like Joey did, is the best solution.

You want the plates to sit flat on the backing plate past the heads. I had to clearance mine slightly with my new pads. Take out one bolt on the caliper and allow it to swing out of the way and then try it. I was just dealing with this last weekend.

Well, you've just asked the proverbial Ford versus Chevy, on the top or on the bottom question.

The optimum situation (I think everyone would agree) would be to have zero toe in/out.  IMO a slight amount, less than 1/4", of toe out would be acceptable on a tail dragger.

    Gear Alignment (allowable Toe Out)?
I am checking my gear alignment and find I have some toe out.  Is there a criteria for this (max allowable)?

Are the heads of the Allen bolts sitting in counterbored spots?  If not, then you could change to a thin hex head bolt, or use an allen lock washer under the hex bolt to fit in the counterbore -
Or, you can grind some off of the allen heads and it wont hurt them.  I have ground 1/2 head height off before.
There is also a round-head (button-head) allen bolt that has a shallow head - if you can find them.
    EDMO
If I had designed this setup, I would have countersinked the holes and used flat-head allen bolts, or the equivalent,
    rather than grinding on anything.

The revised Model 4 manual (1996) says to file material from the brake calipers if the mounting hardware impinges on the caliper before it completes its travel to one side or the other.  My original manual did not include these instructions.  The diagram shows arrows pointing to the area where the bolt heads interfere with the caliper in your photo.

I used a round file to file both the inside caliper and outside caliper on my brakes to clear the mounting bolt heads and nuts.

    Brake Build Question
I am putting together the brakes on a model III and have a question regarding a need for clearance between the caliper mount and the allen head screws which attach everything to the gear. Below are a few pics. The interference blocks about 1/2 of the ultimate travel. Maybe this is not needed? Does the install look correct?

    Ron,
Not only burned exhaust valves, but your EGT gauges might read higher with wraps.
I don't plan on EGT for my Soob - the car didn't have them, and my carb is non-leaning.
I don't fly higher than about 3 or 4000 msl, our highest "Mountain" is 1700 msl,
so don't think I need them unless the prop pitch changes EGT too much, and mine is not IFA.
Just fly fat, dumb and happy as long as there is gas in the tank and the fan keeps turning!
Anyone care to comment on this?  Maybe NOT about fat, dumb and happy!

I haven't done any research on a fuel pressure guage - I would like to find a cheap one of course - I had a deal on a FC-10 flow meter and got burned by ad on ebay - Got money back, but FC-10 was a scam by someone who was listed as "mearoger" in Arkansas.
    EDMO
Can you believe:  Spruce lists a fuel pressure gauge for about $8 - Maybe $10 in newer catalogs.
When "aircraft" gauges are $125 to $250 !!  Guess I need to visit my autoparts store...

Thanks Dusty. I'll leave well enough alone.  This aircraft is set up that way as well and had 300 hrs TT.  When I received it, the motor and plumbing were off and I wasn't exactly sure how it was plumbed.  I have a fuel pressure gauge. I think I'll T off the elec pump to the gauge to monitor the pressure.

I have a low pressure facet mounted before the pulse pump,(it is easer as the pulse pump is also the splitter).
This systym has served me well for 300+ hrs,
I am currently rebuilding a kf4 and was surprised to find in level attitude the tank flow is 22litres per hour at the carb with gravity alone!
With the exception of a real steep climb or a restriction, the flow is in excess of a 582's maximum requirement,
Also wing tanks possibly run slight positive pressure so don't frett too much about fuel supply, but redundancy is a good thing

I have the 22 inch tall "Taildragger" Grove Spring gear on my nosedragger.
    1.  My plane started out as a taildragger
    2.  I got a good deal on the KF5 gear for my "Fat, Heavy, Foxy".
    3.  6 more inches height and 8" wider is always better!   But 7 or 10 extra pounds is not...
The nosedragger gear is only 16" to axle, and that didn't leave enough room for my 600-6 nosewheel .
I will post photos of mine someday, after I can finish my wing mods and new struts.
Right now we are watching your bird get finished.
    Looking Good.

Some of the Cubs had a header tank located behind the rear seat at the top of the fuselage - So don't only think about a floor location - "More than one way-------"!  There were a couple of tanks on ebay recently that might work - not as cheap as a plastic jug....But no pump needed if up high.
If you fly mostly solo, there is plenty of room for a portable tank in place of the passenger.
Plastic boat tanks would be good - and all the fittings are already there...maybe quick disconnect in line?
    EDMO
A passenger weight is usually equal to 20 to 30 gallons of fuel.
