When I investigated the inside mount antenna, I discovered the same restriction as Chris mentioned. I would not put one in a kitfox.

The Hacman style is very effective and simple once it's installed.  I haven't had any issues with mine.

Is the Artic Sparrow system still available?

Most likely the inside mount antenna is a ground plane-less dipole with a balun transformer. Super great antennas but will only work in a composite or wood airplane. The builder of my Magnum installed one in the tail and it did not work very well because the antenna coupled into the nearby metal  parts of the empanage nd produced a lot of "shadows" in the polar response.

I like this inside antenna made by Paul, Does anybody have any experience with it and how well it works. I would sure think i could fit it some where inside the kitfox.

Hmm, seems like the Artic Sparrow Mixture control would be much simpler. I have used mine for years with no problems.

Best theoretical place to put the antenna is on the bottom of the plane centered on an adequate ground plane. I never did that myself. Always put on top.

The builder of my Magnum put a nearly vertical fiberglass dipole antenna in the tail. Didn't work worth a shit because the ungrounded dipole coupled to the nearby tubing in the tail and created all kinds of blind spots. The ungrounded dipole is a GREAT idea, but only works on composite or wood airplanes.

Anyone know someone building a composite or wood plane? I have a great dipole antenna for sale cheap! )

In my setup I kept the stock needle, needle jet and idle jet. I ended up bumping the main jet all the way up to 200. At first it didn't make sense that I would have to go to a jet much larger than sea level. I eventually reasoned that with the valve turned to full rich (off) that acoustic pulses present in the aircleaner where I had the reference port were producing a pressure lowering effect in the floatbowls.

I had the choice of placing the reference port inside or outside the aircleaner. I reasond that inside was best because as the aircleaner got dirty, Iit would not change the mixture b/c the carb inlet and ref port shared the same relative air pressure.

If you didn't put the mounting plate in before covering, then you could have a problem getting it in now behind t'deck.  It attaches to crosstubes.  But, I guess it could be done from under the tubes by using some angles.  It doesn't have to be in the exact center of the fuselage if that makes it easier.
I had one mounted on a part-aluminum turtledeck - it has to be grounded good.   But it is a PIA when you want to remove t'deck.  I have the mounting plate for this plane.
For best transmission, you should have a ground plane under it with a radius of about 1/2 the length of the antennae - copper or aluminum foil glued under fabric and grounded to antennae is good enough.

The restricter Is a very critical part and requires a bit of experimentation.
200 f is ample adjustment, any more could end in tears with a momentry laps in concentration on decent
Mine operates full range at 1/2 turn on a needle valve,

What do you guys suggest for a VHF antenna and where on the plane do they work the best?

Thanks again Chris,  Your advise is well taken.  The local hardware suppler at the Port Townsend Boat Yard has tons of different valves and hardware. Armed with knowledge I'm sure I can find the needed materials.  I may mount the valve on the firewall and just make a stem extension to operate the valve from the panel.  That way I woould not have to run any more tubes through the firewall.

I flew for an hour tonight,  temps were in spec for the conditions, 60F OAT, baro 3006.  By the weekend we will be in the 40 degrees at morning and 80s in the afternoon routine again.  That would mean at least two adjustments to jets and needle positions.

I have to make the HAC to get away from that.

By the way, I'm enjoying this FORUM, unlike some others I have attempted to participate in, in the past, this is a neat place.

  23. EDMO added a post in a topic Metric AN bolting (Engine Mount)?

All of your engine bolts are metric - There is no requirement that I have ever heard of that requires AN bolts or any other "certified" material or parts to be on an "Experimental" aircraft, although it is commonly recognized to be "good practice" to use them.
You can tell the DAR that the metric bolts are "standard" for that engine, which is approved by the Kit Manufacturer, and there are thousands of them in use.
ONLY if he asks!  "Don't ask - Don't tell"  !!!
    EDMO A&P / AMT
You can always ask the inspector to show you the FAR that requires something - 99% of the FARs don't apply to the Experimental category.  If it is not written as an FAR for "Experimental Aircraft", then it is not applicable.
Marking, FAR45?, inspecting, FAR43,appD., and the parts for Night Flight and Pilot requirements do apply.
I haven't checked, but there may be metric bolts in the MS (Military Specs), which are just as accepted as AN,
but again. I don't think you need to worry.
    Check Spruce catalog.
