The Kitfox 4 project I bought last summer had a chute that also shot through the bottom of the plane plus the strap going up the side covered with tape. I won't put it back in when I rebuild the plane. There is way more room back there on a Kitfox 4 than the earlier kitfoxes or Avids though. Jim Chuk

My Mangy Fox had a BRS in it when I bought it.  It was configured to fire out the BOTTOM of the plane under and behind the baggage sack.  The leads were wrapped around the side of the plane (covered with an ugly 6" wide tape) to the turtle deck then to the overhead.

I sold it (needing a new rocket and repack) for $800.  IMO - good riddance.

Hi, I was thinking of ordering a Sorenson trailer for my KF3. Have you heard from anyone who has bought one regarding quality of build, materials, etc? Thanks Scott

I think they say the rocket will go through about anything then the chute will rip the rest off. As if you wouldn't have your shorts full enough when a wing folds they deploy a rocket behind your fricken head ha.

What happens to the turtledeck on the Kitffox shown above when the canister goes boom?

The flaperon mixer on the Kitfox 4 is completely different from the earlier Kitfoxes and Avids. Lots more room for the BRS in the Kitfox 4 than the Avid behind the seat as this picture shows. Here's a thought, mounted underneath, (like a bomb). That's how it was set up on my Himax. If you need it near the front for CG purposes, put it in front of the landing gear. Landing gear was shorter on the Himax than a Kitfox, and I never hit it on anything. Jim Chuk

I still stick by my opinion that if they can put a sticker on the dash of a 180 hp Carbon Cub and get away with the honor system of the pilot NOT going over XXXX RPM to limit the "hp rating" then I can use the same principle of a sticker on my dash saying to only adjust the prop on the ground via a switch mounted in the cockpit.   I have a hard time believing that even the feds honestly think that a guy in a 200k plus 180 HP CC is really going to not use the full RPM available to him in his new toy.  If that can pass the grin test then I have no problems putting a sticker on my panel as well....

I talked to Dean Wilson at length about the CG issues.  The original limits were established based off some one who had never flown before building the plane and learning to fly in it.  Dean said they did factory testing and it flew best with the CG around 18".  He did caution me to not stall the plane without full flaperons if the CG was behind 20" or 21", I don't remember off the top of my head.  I like mine at 18-19" and I have flown past that.  The plane never got too squirrely on me but I did have to use some flap input to keep the nose down.  I would not think twice about flying your plane where the CG is now.

Found it. kitfox IV 1200 trigear nice plane but one of the wheels is in the wrong place!

    Larry3400,  Yes, you are correct.
I was pointing out the fact that there was no plastic leading edge extension when the manual for the Kitfox 3 was printed, and the leading edge was the front of the spar, and all figures were taken from that point.
The leading edge extension started with the model 4 with the Riblett ribs, and they never changed the wording that the datum was the leading edge, although the leading edge was extended, as was the tail dimensions, and the cg range was changed.

thanks you answer, but BRS is not giving special instructions for AVID , as there are many CG configurations according to situation ... mine is at workshop at the moment ,having a 462 rotax without electric starter , it is one of these one can consider to do this way..
anyway, ist'n there any picture showing installation exemples? that would help in any case..

I would suggest you contact BRS. They should have recommended mounting instructions for an Avid. Usually Avids are nose heavy, even with a light engine..... What is your flying CG? Jim Chuk

    this is canister version ...
my Avid is already "light forward" .. was really considering all possibilities to put be in front
I can convert it to soft pack if better, I know someone who makes custom cordura packs and repack them

    looks like this one

Both of my model IV airframes use (as do all kitfoxes) the leading edge of the wing as the datum point.

I agree - as a practical measurement should be from front of wing -
However his cg limits, as listed in the manual, are written as measured from the front of the spar, as are all dimensions for fuel, pilot, wheels, etc - if his manual is like some others I have read.
I don't know if Larry measured or changed all the dimensions, or went by what was listed in the manual.
The KF3 manual does not include any additions to leading edge or tail, as none were available at the time the manual was written.
If you change the datum line location, you have to change all the other dimensions, and that is not "by-the-book".
    EdMO
My plane is a Foxy Flapper, a different size wing, with no kit or manual, and I have to figure and write my own limits -
but that is a whole different story.

Ed, Yep, I would make it if I corrected back to the spar.  Ultimately it may bear down to if the cuff changed the center of pressure on the wing at all.  Pressure being more set by the local wing geometry vice the leading edge (just a guess).

Ed, I think you are correct, my memory says it's the same for all Avids (A,B, C, MK IV). As far as measurments, I would think front of wing is front of wing. A leading edge extention would move the front of the wing forward, and so that is where I would measure from. Jim Chuk

    Jim,
I am probably the least knowledgeable about Avids, but I am almost certain that Leni said all Avid wings are the same cg range - maybe not counting the Airdale and Magnum - but I think my Magnum book lists about the same cg range as the other Avids - I checked on that, and the Magnum cg is 11.185 to 17.5 - guess because it's longer.
The main thing that changes is the gross weights.
    LarryS,
The Kitfox 3 W/B uses the front spar as the leading edge for all measurements - Would you be OK in aft cg using that measurement?   The plastic leading edge addition is a Kitfox 4 or 5 modification you made, and not by the manual, so you might get by with front spar measurements and be "by the book"?
