akflyer added a post in a topic Rotax 582 Bings spitting fuel - carb bowl venting problem?
I can't think of anything that would follow with your issues. It just does not make sense to me. What is the difference between a couple holes in the tube versus the open tube? To put the holes in my tube I heated a pin and melted them in there. There should be 4 holes. Top and Bottom and on each side in a cross pattern at the bottom of the tube to drain any liquid that should get in there. The other thing you can do is look for an Arctic Sparrow Mixture control that someone may be selling. I love mine.

Rotax 582 Bings spitting fuel - carb bowl venting problem? For two years, I've had problems with fuel overflowing out of the carb jets when I first pressurize the fuel system, especially if the carb bowls were drained to begin with. I tried everything I could think of, including:
reducing inlet fuel pressure replacing float valves several times adjusting and tinkering with the floats every which way to encourage quick action. About half of the time, fuel would continue to freely flow out the jets and the carb float valves wouldn't seat until I shut down the pump and let things settle for a couple seconds, then tried again. Obviously not acceptable
I finally noticed that it didn't happen when the carb vent tubing was removed. I experimented, and sure enough, could reproduce it 100% of the time with the prescribed "pinhole in a tube" carb vent, and could never reproduce it if the vent port was unrestricted. I ended up using unrestricted 1/8" line into a small breather air filter as a vent, and things have worked great.
However, now I want to add a hacman-style mixture adjustment, which by its nature requires a vent port that's restrictive enough so that you can draw bit of a vacuum against it to lean out the mix. I'm scared to tread into this territory without understanding why restricting the vent port earlier caused an engine-disabling problem.
Does anyone have experience with these symptoms?
Thanks!
Jim

Ed, the Yamaha engine Jim shows in the first post on this thread is a good example of a mass produced engine that could be a good fit for small homebuilts.
I've been interested in this engine ever since I saw a post about it a year ago. There is a Kitfox not too far from me that has one, and it's reported to have amazing takeoff performance. I haven't gotten a chance to go see it, but I plan to. Now that this adaptor is being offered for the Rotax gearbox, I wonder if more people will try it. Here is a link to the barnstormers ad (I have no connection).

Anyone know of any drawbacks with this engine? As Leni said, Gyro guys have been using them for a while. There is a really long thread on one of the rotorywing forums about various user experiences. I'm surprised it hasn't been more popular based on the weight and power.

Thanks KFfan,
Too bad they didn't make a car for the D engine, then it might be cheaper than a limited production "aircraft" engine - Maybe that don't count now - Continental, Lycoming and Bombardier have made a Jillion engines, and they still cost too much!
A VW or Soob with redrive may still be the cheapest 4-stroke engine for small homebuilts.
How many HP is that RX1 SnoGo engine, and what do they cost?

akflyer added a post in a topic Handheld radio issues
In order for me to be able to talk to the tower and other aircraft I had to wire in a High Noise intercom. If you want to keep things portable you can get one for an ultralight that has its own battery power supply, but then you have cords and crap going everywhere. I have an SPA 400N that I put in mine, I think I found it on Ebay for 100 bucks. I wish now I had gotten one that I could wire the ipod into for music on long trips.

My kitfox is loud compared to the Cherokee I used to fly. have youn tried a foam muff covered with a leather muff. That's what i had to do. Now others say it's loud and clear.

I've not used a radio in my Kitfox but I have extensive use of professional 2-way radio communications.
Your description of the squwak seems to indicate two possible sources of the noise.
1. The mic on the radio is not being disconnected when you attach a headset or the headset mic is not performing noise cancellation or it is not close enough to your mouth. Do you speak loudly when transmitting?
2. The noise is not ambient sound
Has this situation suddenly become an issue? Additional information would be helpful.

I plan to use thicker nylon than Kitfox shows.
I put the hinges on mine too.
Whatever Works!

I think Avid's design is like the Kitfox 1, 2, and 3. After all, Kitfox started out as a copy of the Avid. Jim Chuk

What about the Artic Cat 4-stroke I see on TV? Not enough HP?
Still wondering what a "D" engine is...

I don't know about Avid, but the KF 1-3 were solid mounted, and there was clearance problems when folding - KF4 put the lower bearing on a hinge, so it would fold out of the way.
These Roman numbers keep me confused - I never know if someone is talking about an Avid MkIV, or a KFIV, so I use "HuhMerican numbers" for Kitfoxes, like 1,2,3,4,5!
Avid used A,B,C, and then IV - Couldn't they spell "D" , or were they reading Kitfox reports?

Thanks for the replays . Does kitfox and avid use the same method for mounting these bearings ? Also if they are different is one better than the other.
Thanks again

Yamaha RX1 gear box adaptorI saw a guy has adaptors to mount a C gearbox onto the Yamaha 4 stroke snowmobile engine. Add is on barnstormers, and he has you tube videos of it as well. Here is a link for the video.
It would be interesting to see this engine get some more use and any bugs worked out. If you want to see the barnstormers add, search there using Yamaha, and it comes right up. Jim Chuk- 11 replies

If you need the one from the Avid manual, let me know. I have a manual handy. Come to think of it, isn't there an Avid build manual in the files section of this site? Jim Chuk

Jbird,
Posting 2 pages from manual. I didn't read these, but I remember that the flaperon tube don't enter at 90 degrees, and you need to work the notch with a round file to fit the angle, leaving a little pressure on the tube from the bottom bearing.

Handheld radio issuesI can't seem to get a handheld to work worth a darn. I can receive great but when I transmit there is so much background noise I'm almost unreadable. People can hear me fine on the ground or when I have the power pulled back. It's not interference noise its background noise. I can't believe my airplane is much louder than any other. I,ve triied different radios and headsets but nothing seems to help. Can someone suggest a set up they have had success with ?
Thanks
