    Bush Gear
Jacked up and secure. Trial fit.

I need to take new pics of the gear now. Everything is powder coated white with red powder coated springs. Struts are coated internally with a compound similar to teflon, inside and out. As are all the brake caliper mounts and bushings.
I apologize for my absence... and promise to show up on a semi regular basis???

    Ed, no they won't.
The spar spacing may be the same but the control of the flapperons is totally different and not compatible.  Not to mention they are much lighter wings than the 4-7SS use and he will be limited to the 950 or 1050 of your 3.

Guess I should add, that my wings are the STOL undercambered type for Kitfox 3, but they will fit the 5.

I would bet that the $5000+ wing kit does not include the struts, tanks or flaperons, and maybe not the tips either.
Kitfox flaperons are $1000+, and I don't know what struts are.  I think tanks are $440+ and tips are $3-400 depending.
I've got all of them for sale - just need small repairs and recovering, and come to Missouri.

SuberAvid,  try moving the VGs closer to the leading edge of the wing.  My understanding is ~7% of chord is a good starting point, which is ~4.5".

    TJay,
Why do you need an airport with all that flat land around?  I guess putting all that concrete on the corn fields is a way for the Poly-Ticks to get money from the Flying Farmers....

You're right.  I don't want more than the most basic panel to fly day VFR, I'd be willing to fly naked if I thought it would improve performance!

I called the seller, and now I'm running the numbers on a new set of wings, gear, covering, engine inspection, prop, and misc. other stuff.  This might be for me if he's flexible on the price.  Both wings are shot as well as the struts.
Does anyone know off the top of their heads if the KF-VII wing kit includes the lift struts?

I'd say most are 800# +.  But look how they are built:  IFR panels, autopilot, air, tilt, cruise, power windows and Dolby surround...
Keep it real and 700 should be doable.   My yellow plane is 650, and I am hoping for 675 for the Mangy.

A Coast-to-Coast flight in your bird - You should be about qualified as a taildragger pilot, IMO - So simple, compared to those 5-control Whirlythings you have so many hours in as a test pilot!

Larry, you are correct, as usual, the Kitfox 5, 1400-912 is 700 empty weight.   The 4/Lite squared 912 is 600, and the 912S is 625 ew, same as Classic 4.   The lite squared is only lighter with the 503 engine with less horsepower.
I would have a 912 instead of my "boat anchor" Subaru, but at the time I started building, the 912 was $20K and the Soob with reduction unit was about $2K.

I wonder what the Kitfox Lite Squared empty weight is - going to look at my Kitfox book and see if ew is listed.

I use Avemco and get a pretty good rate on my avid flyer.. For $300,000 liability and $15,000 hull about thousand dollars a year. The policy required me to get a tail wheel familiarization with an IP familiar with the type, or with the builder. I have about 7500 flight hours which probably helped keep my rate down.

Under 700#?  Wow, I thought they started at 750 if you were lucky.  I will have to add the model V to my short list.

I got several quotes through different brokerages and they all came back to Falcon so I ended up going with Falcon through EAA.
My quote from Falcon was as follows:

$1,382 for ground and flight ($30k agreed value)

$603 aircraft liability ($1,000,000) and medical expense ($20,000)

    $1,985 total policy premium.

A stipulation is that I must be under direct CFI supervision on all flights as a student pilot. Must receive 10 hours of dual flight instruction to include 10 full stop landings and obtain TW endorsement in make and model prior to solo.

As an interesting side note, if the aircraft had any other engine than a 912 they were not interested in insuring me and to bind the insurance the make and model of the installed engine in the aircraft must be documented and approved by the underwriter.  They will not insure auto engines.  I wonder if a 582 would count as an aircraft engine to them?

80 hp in a light-built Model V can perform just fine.
A Model V can still be kept under 700# and perform very, very well, especially with a pilot who knows and understands his craft.

The takeaway from this is to be diligent, just like you are with your auto or home insurance.  Shop them around every once in a while to keep everybody honest.
EAA/Falcon has kept my business thus far.  Your mileage may vary.

  25. C5Engineer added a post in a topic Flaperon behavior in a stall

Tape on the gap and VGs on the tail made a considerable difference on mine. Power On stalls are pretty ridiculous. I can about do a tail slide. If you want to practice those get into a steep climb and then chop the power to simulate a departure engine failure. Dump the nose instantly or you are in a deep stall. I personally know two guys killed in a departure stall after an engine failure.
This guy was hangared right across from me. He went straight in. The other one was in an older 582 powered Rans S6. Same outcome.
