Did the same person suggest some snipe would be good for dinner, and it'd be great if you'd go hunt some?

Cool - Loved the Phantom and the Gemini capsules - they were in a James Bond Movie after all!
The guy that I bought my Avid from was in the Pacific in  WW II, still alive and kicking today.  He showed me his original pilot license from 1940-something.  He and his buddy built it in 1991, when they were both in their early 70's, and they are both still alive.  So building an Avid in your 70's apparently leads to a long life.  You may or may not want to give the missus that bit of information!

Let's see, in 1964, what was I doing? Hard to remember, but I think it was potty training....
I admire your persistence - glad you finished!  Most of Mom and Dad's friends worked a t McDonnell Aircraft in St. Louis when we lived there.  I still remember watching the F-15's fly out of Lambert newly finished, that was cool.

That is indeed true.  I remember a sci fi book I read where all the household machines were semi-intelligent.  They amused themselves by gossiping about their owners with machines in other households.  The hero in the book was able to listen to this gossip and use that information to bring down the 'bad guys'.  I thought it was ludicrous at the time, after all, who needs a semi-intelligent refrigerator? (since it is generally a semi-intelligent guy opening it?)  But now here we are, with refrigerators that will order your beer when it gets too low, and all the tech talk is about the growth of the 'internet of things'.

North of you, 15FL.  I wander down to Tavares every so often for a seaplane fix until I get my Avid to Florida and get the floats under it.

My Avid only has cheek radiators, and I haven't had any cooling issues - in fact it tends to run too cool.  I'll see what it is like when I get it to Florida.

Of course it is, a pilot site about airplanes.  I don't think too many planes are logging on and reading these posts.  It might be fun to read what they post about their pilots though!

I still like Burt Rutans response when someone kept asking him about putting this or that into one of his designs.  He said the decision is simple.  Take the thing, through it in the air.  If it comes back down, it shouldn't go in the airplane

  11. marksires added a post in a topic Brake pedal mods

Those look like the MC5's I took off my Avid.  What I did was remove the existing pedals, and made new ones.  I used flat 4130 that I cut with a tab for the cylinder attachment, then bent them into a 'U' shape.  That put the tab at the bottom of the pedal where it is supposed to be. Then I drilled the hole for the through tube to connect it to the same place the old pedals went.  It was simple, doesn't rely on my welding 'skillz' to keep the tab attached, and didn't weigh anymore than the old ones did.  I used washers and cotter pins to keep the through tube in place.  I had to use the shortest cylinders Matco had - MC4-G or MC4-H, and install an external reservoir.

In my old house it was attached to the circuit breaker box in the basement (surface mount box).  I haven't found the one in my new house, but I'll admit I haven't looked very hard.

Yea, good stuff.  And fly the pattern correctly. AND ANNOUNCE YOURSELF.  I was flying a pattern at an airport in Florida, had talked to unicom, got the winds and runway in use.  I was about halfway in the downwind leg when another airplane buzzed by me nearly head on, heading for the opposite end of the runway.  No talking on the radio, and he left the pattern without landing.  I verified that I hadn't missed a right hand pattern for the airport, but no, it was standard left hand patterns for both runways.
Of course, this was the airport that the 9/11 hijackers trained at, and it was about the time they would have been training there.  I might have almost been a hero, and no one would have ever known!

  16. marksires added a post in a topic Brake pedal mods

I made new pedals for mine, and changed to the shortest Matco cylinders I could get, I think they were 'G' cylinders.  My plane is in another state right now (still moving), when I get it next month I'll take pictures of the new pedals and post them.  BTW, don't waste your money on the 'intensifier kit' from Matco.  I tried that first.  It made a small improvement, but not enough to be worth the time, effort, and money it required.  With the stock pedals and MC-5 cylinders, I could barely hold 3500 rpm, now I can hold it for a full power runup, although it does start to creep if I take too long doing it.

I think I found the problem - the 'Items I follow' filter was checked.  I unchecked it and it seems to be working again. No idea how that got checked - I don't follow anything (at least most of the time :-)  )

'New Content' quit working for me yesterday afternoon. If I go to 'Activity Stream', and then pick 'Topics', it looks mostly like 'New Content' should, but 'New Content' is always empty, no matter how long I've been gone.

  20. marksires added a post in a topic Pull Starter

The guys that built mine didn't put in the electric starter at first.  They said after the first flight pull starting it, they ordered the electric start option. Pretty much settles it in my book!

Agreed, 5 people in a 4 place, takeoff occurred around 2:30am, I'm sure they were all perfectly sober....  Sad, but at least in an airplane they were likely to only hurt themselves.  If they'd headed out in the farmers ton pickup (don't all farmers have those?), they could have taken others with them.

  22. marksires added a post in a topic Is it just me or are JUST's getting more....

Yea, I think the price was under $2000, but couldn't remember exactly so I shot a little high.  For some reason $1,900 sticks in my head (After taxes, title, delivery charges), but these days random things get stuck in my head for no good reason.
That 1972 molotov Pinto became mine when I got to driving age a few years later.  I was the one that took it back to the dealer for the exploding gas tank 'fix'.  I felt SO much safer after watching them stick a piece of 1/4" plastic in between the rear housing and the gas tank......

  23. marksires added a post in a topic Is it just me or are JUST's getting more....

Yep, times change.  I remember my parents bought a brand new molotov Pinto in 1972.  Total price, brand new out the door was under $3000.  No power windows, no power locks, AM radio, no A/C.  Anemic 4 cylinder engine, but it was a car, brand new, ordered from the factory (remember those days - get what you want, not what they had???).
