  4. High Country added a post in a topic spar attach plates

just another thought. I had one wing not quite where I wanted it so to relocate the sweep- very minutly probably not necessary but I'm being a bit anal, I filed out the hole oversized very carefully and sleeved it with some 4130 tubing it goes all the way through the aluminum spar and steel reinforcment brackets sticks out on both sides just a bit then with the wings in place and pined throught this new sleeve which was tapped in tightly I carefully applied some hysol with a tooth pick inside and all around the top til it tapered nicely into the spar, after it dried I applied more hysol inside made for a real nice fit and now the pin will have to wear on a 1/4" +- long steel sleeve and not dirrectly on the aluminum. I also have the 4 rivet reinforcment plates on my bird. good luck

Iv'e not considered NOT wearing a seat belt before, I'm a bit nervious about just using the original shoulder belt that came with my kit and am planing to change it to a four point. Should be interesting to see the findings of this incident.

  6. High Country added a post in a topic Buuilding wings for model 2

I'm just about complete with building my wings and have never done it before. I would say they are pretty easy just takes time. as mentioned you could possibly save some serious time and a bit of money if you can find a set of complete wings, if so make sure they have the newer ethanol resistant fuel tanks in them they will have a SN# on them. Should you decide to just build them yourself you can get ribs from KF for a reasonable price I'm sure they were slightly different airfoil but will work just fine just make sure you get the matching butt rib for the fuselage. If you do go this route and you need I have a new set of powder coated speed wing spars that I decided not to use let me know if you're interested and I will get you a price. ask lots of questions on here and I'm sure someone here can get you the answer you need, they always come through for me :)good luck

  8. High Country added a post in a topic Flaperon

You could probably check AC 43.13 However if it were me I think I would cut the flapperon off as close to the bend as possible getting rid of all the bad part. Get a new piece of aluminum tubing (aprox 6" long) that has the same outside diameter as the inside diameter of your current tubing. clean it real well and apply Hysol to the first half and slip it into the original tubing. then take a new piece however long you need to add on and Hysol it onto the second half of the smaller tubing. I would say if it is inside each side by 3" it should be good. pop a couple rivets into both sides on front and back only (don't want rivets where the aluminum sheeting will touch it) then just fab up some foam blocks wrap the new aluminum sheeting (could probably bend it by clamping some 2x4's to it) and over lap it to the old sheeting by say 1" Hysol it all together and add some pop rivets to the area that is over lapped and you're good to go. make sure that the hinge is correct for the rib tail. good luck

  9. High Country added a post in a topic Flaperon

I'm not sure if you're looking to make a new one or just repair the one you have, if its bent towards one end to bad to be fixed you may be able to cut it off and just rebuild the bad part, I've seen a KF with one extended done in this fashion. . you could sleeve the good tube (small piece inside to allow the extension to slip over it) to extend it to the length needed then just overlap the aluminum sheeting and rivet it together. The design is really simple. an aluminum tube (2024-T3 OQ-A-250/5) for the spar some Styrofoam cut to the shape all wrapped in the aluminum sheeting, could probably use some aluminum flashing that comes in a roll for roofing from any hardware store. all of this is glued together with hysol then riveted together. as for the hinges you just need something for the bushing pressed onto the aluminum tube and the hinge goes over that. I've seen KF's with a much better hinge and I would like to build some like them for my project if anyone has pics and info for these maybe it would help us both out...Anyways sorry for being long winded here are some pics of the inside maybe they will help

  12. High Country added a post in a topic Elt - save life?

Seeing as its just been brought up. is there a specific requirement for an ELT on these birds. I plan to use some sort of a PLB or a SPOT as they are more up to date and if needed I believe they would do more good than an outdated ELT. That said I will have one regardless of what is required but do I still need to pack on the extra weight of an old school ELT and if so what are the requirements for having the ability to activate it from the cockpit? and for replacing the battery. I bought this one a while back because it is completely self contained and pretty light, but to mount it in a place out of the way I will not be able to activate manually from the seat. thoughts? use it, toss it, use a different one? I also have an Artex 200 that could be mounted further aft and still be manually activated from the panel but its a LOT heavier than the one in the pic

  13. High Country added a post in a topic Wing inspection plates

when trying to decide where to put and how many inspection rings I wanted on my wings one thing I used to determine was that its easier to wish you hadn't "wasted time/resources" installing them than to wish you had installed them later. I started with the few I knew I wanted ie. wing tip for light access, then when it was all done I had one in every bay staggered from front to back. too much... probably, but if I ever need one there is probably one that will work, and if not I probably made a big oops anyways and will not be worrying about inspection rings. for what they cost and weight its not going to decrease performance any and I had all of them installed in just a couple hours. just my .02 cents

Edit: if you center them with the holes in the rib web you can reach across to the adjacent bays from each hole.

Dale, I also have started this conversion see here the right cable stays on right side and left on left. I mounted my cable brackets a little to low on the flapperon sides and had to adjust the angle of the horns not to big a deal. also had to rebuild the flap handle. I would like to see some pictures of your system, maybe I could steal some thoughts.

Chris, I will check the length when I get home tonight and get back with you tomorrow, I believe they are 5" stop to stop. I wouldn't worry to much about them breaking or binding as long as there are no abrupt bends in them as other designs have used this same system, I think the belite is using it now and I have never heard of an aircraft going down because of a broken cable. Its just like flying behind a 2 stroke you get used to it and never give it a second thought. just fly and enjoy.

Just thought I would throw out a link to more info on these specific cables in case it is of any assistance. I had Boise Rigging make these same cables for mine but haven't finished hooking it all up yet to get exact deflection measurements. So far all seems good though. http://www.boiserigging.com/categories/Push%252dPull-Cables/ based off the info here and converting it with the part# in Dougs pic part# 173-VTT-5-60 (same one I used) the cable itself (173=) falls under the "utility" category and is supposedly more "rugged" Cable size (V=) is 10/32" (very light duty) TT= threaded on both ends (5=) 5" of travel and overall length (60=) is 60"

I'm converting my Model B to the cable system and I believe I only have 3" of travel as well. I don't have all my pics here to confirm the exact size I will check when I get a chance. the company that originally made them for Airdale is near me so got them to make mine. let me know if you want their contact info and i will get it for you. here is a link from when I was looking for info maybe it will help-
/page__hl__teleflex%20cable__fromsearch__1 and another link. I think one of these has a pic of the original part# tag on the cables used by airdale

Just drill a second hole a couple inches back of the original. it is probably easiest if done before fabric (thats how I did mine) but would work drilling up through the bottom if it is already covered.

How did you like the adjustors on the rear, I was thinking about doing them on each front strut attach point than you could tip the leading edge up or down as necessary. on one of my wings i currently have to pick up slightly on it to slip it into place to install the pin and thought that by having the adjustment in the front i could adjust this out of it.
