My first ride in an Avid was a B model with long wings, but speedwing  ribs.  It took off and climbed just fine.  Cruise speed was a good deal faster than the undercambered wing however.  Maybe if a guy was to build the wings with 2 extra feet length, speedwing ribs, and a more pointed front on the front spar, it would end up better than either one.  But then that is nearly what the Kitfox 4 and later wing is.... Thanks for the reply Randy. My windshield has the two bumps in it for extra headroom.I finally took my skis off last Friday, and flew off my strip on wheels on Sunday. Some standing water, and mud on the strip, but I didn't hurt the prop, so all is well there. Left on a trip to SC on Monday, dropped my Jabiru engine off in Shelbyville Tn on the way through. Was just sitting outside in the sun with bare feet and thinking it's kind of hot already. Well enjoy your winter while you still have it, I know it's my favorite time to fly! Jim

How heavy are the EDOs? I have that set of Avid fiberglass floats and wonder how they match up for weight. I don't think I'll ever fly floats myself but they were part of a deal I couldn't pass up. Jim

I think I know who you are referring to.  I seem to remember an article she wrote about the Kitfox  and it's origin and if I remember right, according to her, the Avid was a copy of the Kitfox.  Jim

We hit about 70 today.  I should have taken the plane out yesterday while the strip was still useable.  The snow is getting real mushy now.  Will have to put the wheels back on before the next flight I think.  Hopefully it will stay warm and dry so my field will dry out soon.  Jim

Randy, Just notice in your nice pictures that your windsheild steps up above the wings. I suppose that is to get more headroom. Any closeup pics of that area, and any comments on it? Thanks, Jim

  14. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic KFIV-1200 vs MKIV HH

Some other differences between them is the Kitfox 4 is 9" longer between the rear wing spar and the horizontal stabilizer than the Avid MK IV so it's not as short-coupled. 2" higher headroom as well. Also, the Kitfox 4 has less adverse yaw due to the fact that the mixer for the flaperons causes the one flaperon to move about twice as much as the other. Avid did make a modified part that helps,(F7-A bellcrank) but it doesn't do as much as the Kitfox 4 does. Also, the Kitfox wing is supposed to be a good bit faster than the Avid wing. Take care, Jim Chuk

Thirty years ago this spring my four year old son and I drove back togeather from the tri cities area in Washington state back to Mn. Just the two of us also. It was quite a trip. I'll have to ask him what he remembers of it. And yes they do grow up fast. Looking back, it seems like those 30 years went by way to fast. Enjoy them as much as you can, while you can. Maybe you've heard of the song by Harry Chapin called Cats in the Cradle. It sure is true! Jim

Sorry if I'm going on to much about our winter, but today the TV weather for Duluth Mn said they are currently in 4th place for snow years. Record is 135" and they were at 130" They said Duluth got 50" of snow so far in April. All of last winter they got 35" I'm about 60 miles NNW of Duluth. Supposed to be 60 this weekend, so maybe the tide has turned. Jim

Leni, I was just looking at the map, wasn't sure exactly sure where Soldotna really was. How would the weather be in Fairbanks now. I'm sure being close to the ocean warms your area quite a bit. Jim

    Poly-spray needed
Hi all, I've been working on the Avid MK IV that I had to land in a to short field a year and a half ago. Back when I thought full coverage was to expensive. Need a couple or 3 full cans, maybe some reducer and poly brush if you want to get rid of it also. Thanks, Jim

Look often and call quick! If you aren't first and it's a super good deal, you probably aren't going to get it. Jim

PS our latest big snow storm is going just south of us right now. Sounds like the Duluth area and northern Wi are going to get another foot of snow!

    Still Flying on skis
I was unsure how to title this topic, I almost went with Global warming? or something like that. At any rate, I went flying with skis on yesterday from my strip. Actually had to pack the latest snowfall down with the snowmobile first though. Went back over my log book and couldn't find any year in the last 7 that I was still on skis in April. Looking at the forcast, I might still be on skis at the first of May. Mn at it's best! A friend of mine said his dad was ice fishing a couple of days ago, and the ice was still about 4' thick. Oh well, here are a few pics I took yesterday as proof. Enjoy! Jim

Just looked at how the post looked, and see that the pictures show up as 4-7-2013flying. That's just the folder I stuck them in, I really did take them yesterday. Oh by the way, yesterday morning at 4 AM, we had +1 F oficial temp. at the Hibbing airport.

If you guys remember my laszer prop pictures I posted a few months ago, that is a very helpfull tool for seeing the blades twist when you tighten the hub bolts. By only tightening one side until the blade starts to twist and then doing the other bolts you see what's happening right as it starts to twist. Jim

Do you by chance have any pictures of the urathane bushings and how they fit in where they do? Dosen't the Highlander use a three legged gear? I wonder if that is why? Questions, questions.... Thanks, Jim

  23. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Should I buy this 1990 MK IV?

N 399Q on the FAA website is and Avid Flyer, serial # 399. Currently owned by a Jerry Warren of Medford, Oregon. Seems like everything is okey with the FAA on the plane. Probably a C model. I've never flown a speed wing Avid, higher stall and landing speeds than the long wing versions. I had a couple of B models and 2 MK IVs so far. They all flew good. All very responsive and quick on the controls. The B models climbed better because they were lighter with the same engine (582) I still think that with all that comes with the plane it should be a good buy if it's in nice condition. I would want the longer wing, but if you want to cruise at faster speeds, the speed wing might be the way to go then. Go have a look at it and if you can get someone else to look at it with you. Go for a ride in it and see what you think. Everyone's ideas are different, I might love one plane and you might not be very impressed with it at all. Most of these Avids and Kitfoxes don't get left outside, so the fabric is probably good. Again you have to look at it. Take care, Jim Chuk

  24. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Should I buy this 1990 MK IV?

It looked nice in the pics. Not a bad price either. If the extra wings are good, I would guess they are worth $2500 or so. We were just discussing a few weeks ago, what flaperons are worth, if they are on the long wings as well, I've heard prices of $750 each used. Might be high, but it's still valuable and makes the price of the plane itself that much less. Trailer must be worth $500 or so any way also. Look it over real good, if you are worried about it being twisted up, bring a ruler and measure from tail to wing tips and such to see if it's square and true. Another place to look for dammage is the seat truss. Lots of them get bent in hard landings. Top and bottom tubes were never spliced from the factory. Not a big problem if it's fixed good, but evidence of dammage history. Just a few thoughts, look it over and see what you think. If you can bring someone else who is familiar with rag and tube planes, so much the better. Bersa Chute? Does he mean a balistic chute? They are worth a fair amount also, maybe $1500 or more if it's current. Take care, Jim Chuk

Just read birddog's post, what is the serial # if you know it? After 1000 is probably a MK IV, before probably a C

Cowl does look like a C model.

  25. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic What's the proper way to repair this?

Two problems I see with leaving the fabric on. Hard to get at the bent tubes, and also, you need to overbend the tubes to get them straight. It's really sad to buy a plane and be all excited about bringing it home and when you get there you see that. OUCH! On the other hand, the poly-fiber system is very simple to learn, and for sure it can be repaired. Take care, Jim Chuk
