If you look at page 4-67, and 4-69, there are some possible solutions.    If the tube is cracked because it is all rusted away though, better to replace it I would think.   JImChuk

Seems like an odd place for a crack.  Any idea how it came about?  Just a wild guess, but was it being trailered tail first without gust locks on the elevator?  Can't imagine what the elevator controls look like from one end to the other if that is what caused it.... JImChuk

I would say dig though this FAA manual, and see what they say.  I have my own idea, and it may be the same as theirs, but this is a great resource for aircraft repair info.  JImChuk

Most things should be the same from the C model to the MK IV.  Stuff like radiator mounting is probably different, but the radiator way back inside the cowl wasn't very effective either from what I've read.  Actually, the cheek radiators have to be sealed pretty good to the cowl or they run a bit warm as well.  Probably going with the Kitfox style belly radiator is a better option.

I think the AN395-89 ones are what you need.  JImChuk

Kitfox wing tanks are a little bit different from the Avid, but could be made to work.  Kitfox 4 and newer use a nearly flat bottom wing and the tank bottom is flat as well.   JImChuk

I'm not sure you will be able to get any help from anyone in the USA, those who have tried to revive Avid aircraft have not been very successful it seems.   If you have the skills and patience, the parts you are missing could be built.  Tailfeathers and lift struts are some of the larger steel parts that come to mind.  The wings are basicly aluminum tubes with stiffening inserts and wood ribs that are made from plywood.  I would imagine you can source the materials you will need to make up these parts in your area.  Also, perhaps you can find a wrecked Avid some where in Europe and get a jump start on a lot of the things you will need.  Sorry I can't be more encouraging, just telling it as I see it.  JImChuk

Seen your comment on youtube TJay,  It's all a trade off for sure.  Better climb, =less cruise speed for sure.  What is full throttle static rpm?   Nice video by the way!  JImChuk

If you go E- AB, I would look hard at an HKS engine.  About a month ago, I watched a youtube video from a trike dealer having issues with Polini engines.  I hope he is just one guy and not a  trend.  The UL world  really needs a lightweight engine.  JImChuk

I saw that one on barnstormers, and thought, lets see, I have a 503, and then I said no way, to many projects now.  Hope it works out for you.  A buddy of mine up here got a skyraider with an HKS on it last spring, and he likes it a lot.   JImChuk

Avid serial numbers ran sequentially,  and 948 falls within the numbers of C model Avids.  At about 1000, they became MK IV models.  B models are about up to 250.  The serial number is not stamped on the plane.  Jerry Matison lives in western Mn.  Alexandria I think or close to it.  I don't have his contact info though.  JImChuk

Nobody currently is supplying kits.  There never were plans available to the public for the Avid Flyers either.  Are you trying to find a serial number for registration purposes?  If that is the case, you as the builder of the kit can make up your own serial number.  Do you know what model it was (A,B, C, or MK IV)?   Jerry Matison who was an owner of Avid at one point has a listing of who the original kits were sold to.  Of course then you would need the serial number or original owner.   JImChuk

Leading edge of wing is the datum.  Manual shows leveling the rib just inboard of the right wing lift strut attachment.  If you don't have a manual, there is one posted in files and forms sections of this site.  JImChuk

Not really, still have a couple or three waiting in the wings.  If I get this one done, I'll get it out of my hangar.... :-)

    Good deal on epoxy
Hi all,  I've been rebuilding a set of Kitfox 4 wings for a friend and needed epoxy of course.  I'm kind of partial to scotch weld 2216.  I've used Hysol, and the cans got grainy after about a year.  I've used some of the 2216 that was 25 yrs old on non aircraft stuff and it seems just as good as new stuff.  Anyway, I ran across this stuff last week, and the guy still has some left.  I figured I would share with you all.  Most places I found wanted about 250 for pint kits, this is a quart kit for 195 after shipping. He told me the stuff was from 2021, and it looked brand new to me and has worked great on the wings.  It does have an odd ratio, 5 parts to 7 by weight, but if you add the epoxy with the cup on a scale, you can get exact mix ratios pretty easy.  Anyway, here you go.   JImChuk     3M 2216 B/A SCOTCH-WELD GRAY EPOXY one QUART KIT 21200203565 | eBay

  19. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Kitfox 4 build # 2

Not much progress on my Kitfox build this summer, currently I'm rebuilding a set of Kitfox 4 wings for a friend of mine.  Hope to be recovering by the end of the week.  Several weeks ago, I finally got around to sending in the registration on my Kitfox project.  I was kind of worried that the FAA would want a bit more paperwork on the ownership trail back to Skystar.   Today I looked up the N number I requested, (87JC) and there it was.  I have another airplane!   Of course, now the state sales tax people will come after me, but you can't escape that.  Anyway, I'm happy today.  Here are the wings I'm working on.   Hard to believe I have about 30 hrs into them so far.  Second one needs less work, and I made parts for both, so it'll take less time.   JImChuk

Yep, those are the airheart brakes.  TJay has them on his Kitfox 1 I believe.  JImChuk

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Rotax 582 cooling questions

What kind of plane are you dealing with?  Avids do tend to have more cooling issues than Kitfoxes, and sometimes just lowering the Kitfox radiator an inch or so will do the trick with them.  I do wonder if your thermostat is sticking though.  I would take it out, put it in a pan of water and heat it on the stove.  Have a thermometer in the water to see what temperature the thermostat opens at.  One other thing, most planes don't cool on the ground near as well as when they are flying and have better airflow.  JImChuk

  22. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Kitfox IV 582 vs. 912(80hp) only

I can't really compare to the 582, but I have the 80 HP 912 in my Kitfox 4 classic 1200.  I cruise at about 95 mph with about 5200 rpm.  Take off is about 250' and climb is about 1000' per minute.  Those numbers are with me and about 12 gallons of fuel.  All up weight is about 950 lbs at those numbers.  My field elevation is 1500'.   I have a bunch of videos on utube flying it where you can see the instruments.  Search for my name there to find them.  I think if you make the switch, you will be happy with the results.  Jim Chuk

The Kitfox 1 used Airheart brakes.  They were go cart brakes I believe.   The rotor was held onto the wheel hub with flat head machine screws.   Maybe that's not what you have, post up a picture and we will know for sure.  JImChuk

Very nice!  I remember seeing this plane as well.  Good to see your having fun with it.  I had a Kitfox 1 with a 582, and it sure got off the ground quick.  Have fun!  JImChuk
