Jim, for reference this is what I was talking about. This is a close up from the rear looking forward. The bolt you see over time wore into the elevator tube as it protruded too far to the rear. I flipped the existing bolt and it fit well and was nowhere near the tube. I'm getting a slightly longer drilled bolt so I can face it forward and put a cotter pin in to prevent the nut from backing out since it will be facing forward instead of backward.

Thank you, guys. I swapped the bolt around, and there is clearance between the rod and the stop at full back elevator. I like the idea of adding some tubing and getting it welded in place. Many thanks for the FAR reference. I had no idea where to find that.
My short list is getting very short, and I'm starting my tail wheel training. I should be flying her soon. Can't wait! Well, I can and have but I'm very excited to be looking at flying her soon. I appreciate all of your help and will post pictures soon.

    Potential elevator issue
    Hello all!
I bought a MK IV last year, and life got busy. I swapped out the engine, had an annual done, and am clearing all potential issues. During the annual, it was discovered that one of the screws is digging into the elevator tube. I measured the indentation with a micrometer at 1mm deep.

I think I'm going to flip the bolt around to prevent this, but I am concerned about the damage to the tube. Any suggestions?
    With regards,
    John

Success! I added some heat too and they all came out. Thank you!
I've worked on cars plenty, but this is new territory for me. I appreciate the tip.

Heck yeah! Hahaha. Mine would have said "You spent HOW MUCH on a transponder on top of the plane and a new engine?" "Don't think of it as half the engine cost, think of it as an investment in safety."
Yeah, better to not have that convo in the first place.

    Rotax 582/17 engine mounts
    All,
I'm back! I've been busy the past few months, but I'm back and spending a lot of time with my new Avid. It had a 582/99 with 257 hours and more then 5 years old, so I decided to buy a brand new 582/17 so I can have all new components. There are, apparently, some differences between the /17 and /99. I need to move the electric start, which is fine. I'll have to cut into the engine frame a bit but that is fine. My big issue is how to mount it.
The /99 has threads that I can use to bolt it to the frame. The /17 has an internal bolt and is much shorter. In the pictures below, you can see the frame mount, and the /17 next to the old bolt/mounts. As you can see, just the mount is longer than the engine bolt, nevermind being able to get a nut on with enough threads showing. I'm not entirely sure what to do with this. I want to keep the engine mounted at the same water line, but that is not possible with the bolts as is. I'm hoping somebody can point me to an adapter of some sort, or provide another way to do this. I have looked without success so far. I'm sure there is a solution and I cannot be the only one to encounter this.
    Any suggestions?
    With regards,
    John

From the cockpit, it spins to the left. That is opposite of my RV-12 and every other plane I have flown. I haven’t seen any good reason for left vs right hand. Does anybody know why we have left hand props?

I doubt it will be an issue, but I will have to anticipate left rudder on takeoff instead of right.

We had the cowling off, no belt drive. I'm not sure why it is like that - I assumed that was normal. I should have it by Wednesday or Thursday. I'll take some pictures then.

I haven't taken delivery yet, so here are a few pics from the buyer.
I appreciate the offer about questions. I'm sure I will have some. Can't wait to be part of the 'family'!

    Hello from Connecticut
    Hey guys,
I just joined the forum. I decided to take the plunge, and just made a deal on an Avid Mark IV Heavy Hauler. It has a Rotax 582 with 257 hours original from 2006. I will be getting it rebuilt before flying it, which is just as well as I do not yet have a taildragger endorsement. While that is done, I will be keeping it in my garage. Eventually, I'd like to put a Rotax 912 UL in it, but the 582 should do for now.
Looking forward to getting to know her and more importantly getting the training and comfort level I need to fly her well.
    Cheers,
    John
