Transfer your gas to a smaller 2 gallon jerry can for going up the ladder. Put all the gas through a screened funnel into the wing tank. Have a decent step ladder. Sounds like a lot of B.S. but does go quick and easy compared to wrestling the big cans. I do like the pump set up though!

Sube engine mount. Hello Ed. I have a Dave Johnson re-drive on my sube. My mount is repairable but it did get tweaked a little with my nose second(first) landing. Do you know where Dave Johnson got the engine mounts. My is a dynafocal style. The metal parts of the bushing mounts are bright blue. Maybe stratus? The other update is I bought another plane while the Avid is getting fixed. I scored an awesome deal on a 912 powered lil buzzard. It's a Canadian produced variant of a Merlin GT. Going to do some familiarizing today. Cheers. B

"Dads" brand paint stripper is what you want. Apply with the supplied little spray bottle. Stays in place. Scrape and wire brush of the old paint. Re apply if you didn't get everything. Doesn't stink too much but wear gloves and safety glasses. In Canada it's around $50 a gallon. You probably need a quart.

  4. IFMT added a post in a topic More about Flaperon rigging

Max flaperons means high angle of attack of wing. Any more flaperon applied by aileron application increases angle of attack more. You end up stalling the wing. There is no picking up the stalled wing with aileron. Very dangerous when coming in slow for short landing. Flaperons for takeoff will pop you off into ground effect quickly and then as airspeed builds you are smoothly letting them off. Don't get confused about how safe full flaperon setting is. I got real F@#$ing lucky and only bent the airplane. Could have been way worse.

    Vinyl on fabric
Anybody ever use vinyl for adding stripes over fabric? My tail and wing letters are made out of vinyl and sure do stick. I don't think I could pull them off without tearing them. Might be easier than painting on stripes.

  6. IFMT added a post in a topic Kitfox M-III Prop Comparisons for 582

Took a look at the warp drive page. Pretty sure I have the HP prop with HP hub. My exhaust runs 2 into 1. Right side curves across in front of the oil pan to connect  into the left pipe which curves down and back. Connects into a short version of a swiss muffler. Muffler is custom built stainless. More or less a baffled straight pipe. I posted some stuff about this in an earlier thread. Can't remember exactly where though.

This plane is in rebuild mode right now. Prop was destroyed. I think I have a pic of the serial number tag if that tells anything.

Warp drive 3 blade, square  tip, nickel insert. Static off my needle tach 4200+. Unloaded to maybe 4550+. This engine is pretty much stock except for the holley 2 barrel and bigger exhaust. Distributer vacuum advance disconnected . Full static advance. When I first got the plane the prop was about 12 degrees and would easily do over 100 if I wasn't careful. Just not good take off. 2200 asl. field height. B

Looks great! Give us details on the rest of the plane. Is it stretched? Soob engine? Horse power? Any extra weight on the tail? I notice you have the rad quite far back. Copper pipes to run coolant back and forth?

  13. IFMT added a post in a topic Tailwheel Spring

Kitfox spring will not work. I tried it. Still have the new spring. Geometry is different because of the straight bottom fuselage on the kitfox versus the curve on the avid. Tailwheel won't caster right with the Kitfox spring. Width is only 1 1/4 on the kitfox. Search "tailwheel spring rear support" in the general hangar.

  17. IFMT added a post in a topic Avid Heavy Hauler 1200 lb GW?

My serial number ends in E. I guess this makes it a Bandit. It has 083 spars. HH spacing and double false ribs as well as 7/8 struts. Does not have the plastic smooth wing cover on the front spar or the chrome sticks. Plane was on floats when I bought it. GW is set at 1200. EW 726. Since my bad landing(crash) I got a super deal on a complete fuselage (basically a complete aircraft) minus the wings and engine . Going to take a little time but she will fly again!

Bandit, I am curious about your performance. Cruise, climb, STOL? Thanks.

Flaperon spar. I assume the spar material is 6061 T6. Canʼt find numbers on my orignal.Thanks.

Starting to rebuild.Took apart the really bent flaperon. Is there a source for the styrofoam ribs and leading edge. Setting up a hot wire and cutting them with a template sounds like a lot of fooling around. Thanks.

    Flapperons=no roll control
I have went from being a happy avid flyer to a not so happy avid rebuilder. Here is the warning. It is not one thing that got me into trouble. It's a combination. Perfect flying conditions. Needing more experience. Listening to BS about what this plane should be able to do. Getting over confident with slow speed flight with flapperons applied.
I was up for an hour and a half having a ball. Cruising all over the valley checking out the countryside. That morning I had tightened my bungees one wrap as they were sagging slightly. When I hooked the bungee on the seat truss I started on the front post ending on the rear. This allowed (even though I have the limit bolt in place at 18ish degrees-TOO MUCH) me to actually pull the flap lever up till the stop. Something I had not used for landing. I went up to 3000 agl and experiment with some slow flight. This plane is heavy with the soob. Good performance in terms of climb and speed and economy. Not good for slow flight. I found 40 to 45 indicated as being stable with flaps applied. Now the trouble starts. I decided to make a couple of precautionary approaches to a really short strip with trees and equipment on each side. Good glide slope though. Being that it was dead calm I decided I could use the full flapperon approach mushing down at 45. Went through twice and everything felt good powering up 15 feet above the ground. On the third time through I decided things looked good so I would land. Problem is I got slowed up just that little bit more. 40-45. Nose up to control speed. Full flaps. Mushing down. Then things go bad. Slight up pitch on the nose and plane moves to the left. I know you are all thinking stall. I put the nose down and applied power along with right aileron. NO RESPONSE. By now I am below the tree level and the only way out is straight ahead. Left wing didn't fall out of the sky but dropped so now I am banked left. You have 3 seconds to figure this out. Next I am heading straight for some 50 foot pine trees. Thats when the left wing clipped the vent stack of a large storage tank in a line of machinery parked over to the side. Spun me around and down. Nose kind of hit taking the prop blades off and coming to a rest backwards with tail resting above some parked junk. Considering I got out without a single scratch I'm extra lucky. So here is what I already knew: Keep the speed up. 1.2-1.3 above the stall (for your airplane). Not some number somebody thinks an avid should fly at. Flapperons applied for take off do help but are being released as you build speed immediately(smoothly) on take off. Trying to lift a semi stalled wing with aileron and full flapperon is impossible. You are actually aggravating the situation with more aileron. Don't put yourself in a questionable situation. Everything to tight in terms of experience, performance, landing area, etc. Having a great day flying sets up some false confidence as well. The plane is pretty bent and I still have to asses the total situation. Definitely a fuselage and lots of wing work. The message is to not get cocky with those flapperons.

  23. IFMT added a post in a topic Those of you with dual wing tanks, lets talk plumbing to the header?

My system has no vent line from the header. Each wing tank flows directly down to the header (spar tube) tank. From the lower fitting on the header it goes up through a stainless strainer(glass type) and up to the main fuel shutoff valve. From there the line runs through two electric pumps mounted in series. Only one is on at any time, switchable on the dash. The fuel caps are vented but not with a pressure line pointed into the wind. I have had fuel used out of one tank quicker than the other but adjusting my flying has corrected this. I have never ran one tank completely empty. I like to see a little fuel in the sight window of each tank. I don't think it would suck air if one tank went completely empty as the other wold still flow down. Maybe I should be isolating the tanks with valves? Any thoughts?

Maybe one fuel cap is not allowing air to enter as easily as the other. Do you fly one wing low? Fuel will flow to the low wing tank in flight.
