Looking good! When you planning on putting it in the air for the first time?

Sounds like one hell of a trip You said you were chasing EGT's. What was the issue? What is your static RPM and max RPM at straight and level? Were are you having issues with the EGT's and what temps are you seeing? full power, mid range, decent, level cruise

Not doubting u too much, but are those numbers bass akwards? your climb RPM should be more than the static on the ground cause the prop unloads.

I was going to put another muff on the pipe from the Y pipe to the muffler if I needed it, but as of yet I have not needed it.

    Cabin Heat
Here is the cabin heat muff I have been using on my Avid. Even at -15 it keeps it warm enough to fly without gloves on.

U picked up a cheap piece of aluminum at the local hardware store along with some rope gasket material that is used to seal off the doors in a wood fireplace. Cut the aluminum to the length and width you will need with a little extra on the length so you can wrap it around the muffler with the rope gasket in place. They also sell an adhesive for putting the gasket material on. I wrapped the gasket around the muffler and used the sealant and one wrap of safety wire to hold it in place till the glue dried. You will need to fabricate 2 flanges from the scrap aluminum for your hoses. I used a wood dowel that was the right OD for the SCAT hose and wrapped it around the dowel and drilled a few holes for rivets. Then I slipped it off the dowel and pop riveted it up the sides. I cut slits in one end and bent some tabs out. I located the areas I would need to put the nozzles on for the hose and cut them out in the shroud, then slipped in the nozzle in place from the inside, ran some sealant around it and riveted it in place with a few pop rivets. Next you wrap the new muff in place and hold it with tape or a couple hose clamps and drill arcoss the seam for the rivets. A few rivets and you have 90% of the fabrication complete. A couple runs of SCAT hose and your install is complete. On my bird, I picked up a new heat control box off ebay that was for a super cub. No one else bid on it so I got it for 15 bucks shipped! I mounted it on the fire wall and ran a lawn mower throttle cable to it for the heater control (just like the big boys, it will either put the heat in the cock pit or dump it over board). On Wagonmasters plane we just ran the hose into the cockpit with out any controls cause he wanted heat on full time in the winter anyway. I will see if I can get some better pics when I pull the cowling off later today or tomorrow.

After a few flights at -15 or colder, I saw some muffler wrap in the performance section of the local auto parts store. It is a fiber glass wrap with a foil face on it. It is a little spendy, but the package was enough to do 3 planes and probably enough left over to do one or two more. I wrapped the heat muff with the insulation to keep the cold wind off the aluminum shroud and temp went up DRASTICALLY so I figured the money was well worth it!

RPM are about perfect. Gotta be the mid range needle. If you are running 162 on the mains I wold not bugger with it too much.

What is your max straight and level RPM? What is your static max RPM? Before I leaned the top end out too much, I would see if your prop pitch is dead on as too much pitch will drop your EGT's. HP has it right, if your on the top clip on the needle your leaned out all the way on the mid range now so that could be why the mid range was running hot.

    Little Johnny strikes again

Barack Obama was visiting a primary school and he visited one of theclasses. They were in the middle of a discussion related to words andtheir meanings. The teacher asked the president if he would like to leadthe discussion on the word 'tragedy'. So our illustrious president askedthe class for an example of a 'tragedy'.

One little boy stood up and offered: "If my best friend, who lives on afarm, is playing in the field and a tractor runs over him and kills him, that would be a tragedy.""No,' said Obama, 'that would be an accident."

A little girl raised her hand: "If a school bus carrying 50 children droveover a cliff, killing everyone inside, that would be a tragedy.""I'm afraid not,' explained Obama.'That's what we would call great loss."

The room went silent. No other children volunteered. Obama searched the room. "Isn't there someone here who can give me an example ofa tragedy?"

Finally, at the back of the room, Little Johnny raised his hand. In aquiet voice he said: "If the plane carrying you and Mrs. Obama was struckby a 'friendly fire' missile and blown to smithereens, that would be atragedy.""Fantastic!' exclaimed Obama. 'That's right. And can you tell me why thatwould be tragedy?"

"Well,' says Johnny, 'It has to be a tragedy, because it sure as hell wouldn't be a great loss...and you can bet your ass it's probably not an accident either."

  10. akflyer added a post in a topic I need an ELT antenna

One thought... buddy of mine wrecked his plane (the time you really need the ELT to work) it ended up on its back... guess what happened to those antennas that were on the turtle deck / wing root.. he heard the elt going off in his head set so he went on to the next issue.. got out of the plane, made sure the passenger was OK then set about getting a fire going etc... blizzard cam in that night.. he kept going back and putting his head set on and turning on the radio and confirmed that the ELT was going off... took 3 days in a blizzard before it hit him that the antennas were broke off. He pulled the ELT out of the plane, ran up the built in antenna and presto.. withing minutes rescue was looking for him.

I put the antenna for mine behind my seat inside the plane. if it gets broke, the ELT will be destroyed and I will be long past caring if it does not go off. The mounting instructions for mine said it was fine to put it inside the airframe on a tube n fabric plane.

Great, looks like you just cost me some money. I was going to re-do my pannel and take some weight out of it, and some of these gauges look pretty cool. I have used 5 or 6 differnt tiny tachs and never had an issue with them. I know several places are putting thier label on them. I was in the toy store a couple weeks ago looking at one from Mercury Marine and it was IDENTICAL to the tiny tach ( they has a few of each) just with a different brand on it.

I know alot of guys that use this on model airplanes, but never thought about it for doing the pannel. I would wonder how it will hold up unless you shoot a clear over the top when you are done. If you do go with it give us a reports and let us know how it turned out. you should be able to make some pretty trick labels with it!

Couple holes in the tubes are not going to be a deal breaker... I would put a little hysol over the hole to keep water out and call it good. or run the windshield rivets back in place. U spent alot more time dicking with the backers than I would have.. Ida cut the fabric in about 2 seconds flat and had it done in an hour, but that is why you will have a beauty and I have a beat around the bush, alder basher

make the fat bastard your show bird and get the KF in the air

Hey Doug, I just noticed your no longer a club fatbastard builder... did you change your status or did the site do it when you hit X amount of posts As the original fatbastage builder on htis site, you can have that title back should you want it

I would bet you find that you will spend alot less time working on the fatbastard and alot more time flying the KF for awhile. When I first got my plane in the heap of shit it was in, I had it 99% restored in the first 3 or 4 months. Then my brother showed up with his KF from OK and I mothballed my project and put almost 300 Hrs. on his plane the first summer it was not until he sold his plane that I got back on my project... and it took me less than 2 weeks to have mine in the air.

Holy shnikeys i want his work shop and 1-100th of the talent that man has! One of these days I may get the chance to meet him when he cmes up here for his summer trips.. or at a fly in down there. He truely revolutionized the home build industry and gave us one hell of a fun bird to fly!

  23. akflyer added a post in a topic flapperon foam repair.

    Morning Skip,

Sounds like a pretty good plan on the small hole and injecting glue. The flaperons on my avid do have foam forward of the Tq. tube. The flaperons are really floperons when they are not bolted to the wings. I was certain mine were broken and that I needed new ones till I pulled a set off a buddies and his were just as floppy, yet the plane was flying fine. I finaly just convinces myself that it was going to be OK and put them on my lane as is. Once bolted on they are solid.

My brother did the same thing on his KF II as your buddy did. On my Avid, I just run a strip or two of aluminum tape onthe radiator in the winter to keep the temps up at 160. I have not had any issues yet (knock knock) but I am rarely at a high enough altitude that shock cooling could become an issue. if I need to come down fast, I keep power on and pull the nose up not down. This keeps her making heat, wont let it lean out and I can fall out of the sky without rapid cooling.

new ends seals on the crank, and you should be able to inspect the bearings for any signs of rust. The carbs are stupid easy to rebuild, really nothing more than pulling the jets and cleaning them, blowing out a couple passages and slapping them back together. Fuel pump is easy to rebuild also. Just pay attention how you pull it apart, and put the new diaphragms back in the same way. There are lots of good articles on the CPS website and many others that will walk you through this.
