  1. akflyer added a post in a topic site migration issues

Do we have any members here that know anything about the invision software and are computer geeks, I mean gurus?  I have the godaddy security and migration teams working this but they are not invision gurus and are the ones that kind of hosed this up to begin with.  I am 700 miles away from my laptop and the security on the work computers will not let me get into the control panel etc.  If you think its frustrating for you folks I am about 1000 times beyond that level of frustration right now.  Nothing like pissing away 800 bucks for a hack job on the server move..

  2. akflyer added a post in a topic site migration issues

There were issues earlier in the day when they did the cut over to the new server and the site was lost in  cyber space.  They now have it up and running but are still working out some bugs.  I assure you the site is not going anywhere and it was backed up to the posts that were made as of Wednesday afternoon.  Worst case, the hand full of posts made between Wednesday afternoon and late this morning will be lost.
Doing the best I can to keep the site running and headed into the future boss.

    site migration issues
    Folks.
So I paid a lot of money to have the hosting moved to an updated server and for 3 yrs on the new server.  Of course, as murphy would have it there appears to have been an issue with the migration and any posts from Wednesday afternoon till now were lost.  I sincerely apologize and if you have posted a question and now cant find it, please feel free to post again.

  4. akflyer added a post in a topic 582 clutch or not?

I have had engine outs with the clutch and a free wheeling prop.  I have had engine outs without the clutch and a stopped prop.  I will take the later any day of the week.  If one does not think a freewheeling prop makes a difference on glide then one should spend some time flying electric RC gliders with and without the engine brake and see the flight time differences in a freewheeling prop versus a stopped prop.
These are high drag airplanes to begin with.  They glide like an anvil.  With the prop freewheeling they glide like a greased anvil.

I think all the 582s are dual plug.  The 532 was single plug.

The primers are cheap, I replace mine every year when I replace the hoses as well.  The failures I have seen on mine were leaking fuel around the shaft and dripping on my hand.  You get a feel for how they operate when new, and as soon as they start feeling funny during use (hard to plunge etc) swap them out.  Its an item that is in the go bag in the plane along with spare filters.

An extra exhaust spring or two is a good idea for longer trips.  I broke one in flight and got to ride back to the home airport at -30F for an hour with the door open.  If I would have had an extra spring I could have set it down and replaced it..  A few wraps of safety wire would probably do it as well, but the springs really dont weigh much or take up much room in the tool bag.

sheeeeeeeit.  gonna be some some rod burned on this one!  I like the way you did the jig too. I might have to copy it for the Coyote when I finally find some time to get to my own projects

Got a Pitts S1 going on the table this afternoon to jig up, replace sketchy wing attach points then mad the engine mount to take RV3 style gear legs.  Should be a ton of fun, more than a few new words learned and ultimately satisfying when the owner no longer has to worry about the wings coming off the fuse from the shitty work done by the original builder.

    POSSIBLE FORMUM INTERUPTION
The forum will be moved to a new updated server in the next week or so and might be down for a short time when we do the actual cut over.  I will try to give another heads up right before the cut over.
The new server is faster and should take us well into the future.

sounds like you talked to Pierce.  Daves was not carb ice.. Dave also wrecked every plane he ever flew.  If Pierce won't fly with ya I can probably find another instructor for you, even if I have to give them some time in my avid.  Pierce was my initial flight instructor many moons ago and is a good guy, but he can be a bit hard headed.

Maybe we can get Randy to chime in here.  He is in the middle of doing the 18" stretch on a MK IV Avid.  He is also putting the mixer under the seat and doing a few other things to it like the Fat avid (avid+).  I have not put eyes on the project yet but will soon.

  16. akflyer added a post in a topic Yeeehaaaa!!! New Gear is On!!!!

The reality is, when the gear fails, it usually leads to hanging upside down in your seat belts.  Been there done that.  The trick is to get both to take the normal landings as well as the occasional rock or bump you did not see prior to touch down.  I would say that tires have just as much if not more to do with this than the gear legs.  The best gear in the world will still jar your butt to the core if you run over a rock with smaller tires that have more than a few PSI in them.
Valdez and the flying cowboys seems to have fascinated everyone with the carrier landings.  Which have very little if any usefulness in the real world back country flying.

  17. akflyer added a post in a topic Crooked horizontal stabilizer

Mine is the same way.  When I rebuilt it I made certain the tail post was straight before and after welding.  When I bolted on the horizontal stab I flipped the struts every way I could to get the H.stab to be 90° to the vert stab but it was not gonna happen.  I finally bolted it on telling myself that at some point I would make new struts to fix it.  I think it is more of a visual thing than something that really effects the flying.
After talking with a few guys about the factory jigs that were used to make these planes, I am pretty impressed that anything bolts up square.  Making multiple wood jigs for production type runs just doesn't hold tolerances the way I would like to see them held.

Randy, (suberavid) has a hangar on Wolfe Lake and knows these machines inside and out.
For the fun factor its pretty damn hard to beat these birds and you might be pretty surprised what you can haul in them.  I have had some pretty uhhh,... questionable loads in mine   They are not a cub, but they will beat a Tcrate.  I flew side by side with a buddy in his 100 HP tcrate and outperformed him in every way.   Now that I am back on a computer I will reply to your PM.  My phone was having issues letting me type.
Yes I will keep the amphib no matter what!

    Congrats, she looks great!
I went through this on mine.  I finally told the FSDO that I could care less about a AW cert as I had a photo copy of the original.  If they were not going to send the inspector and give me a new one I was gonna fly anyway and be an outlaw, it was their call.  A few days later the inspector was there with a nice new AW cert for me.  He spent about 5 minutes looking over the plane, scanned through my rebuild log I had put together shook my hand and said here ya go.

I have struggled with this myself.  Matco make wheels for the 1.25" axles that will bolt right up.  You can also look at the desser tires that will go on standard 6" wheels. or the 27" dessers that will matco makes an 8" wheel for.

  24. akflyer added a post in a topic When your landing goes wrong.

This is one peeing contest I don't want to get into. I can say from previous and current experiences I am having brought on by trying to "do the right thing" I personally will never volunteer a single thing again.  I get it that there are good and bad eggs in every basket.  Most of the folks I have dealt with have actually been like yourself, pretty damn cool and easy going, however, it only takes one time with a ding dong to make one rethink ever doing things the "right way" again.

Larry beat me to it.  I would not trust an old high time 4 stroke outboard on my boat, not to mention the issues of the oil system etc.  I am sure there are work arounds and mods that could be done to make it work if you wanted to drop the $ and time to do so.  Not sure what the 4 stroke outboards market is down there, but you going to be paying very close to new 912 prices for one here.  A used 4 stroke with 2500-3000 hrs is still selling for the price of a good used 912.
I was fascinated by the scorpion in my younger years and almost pulled the trigger on 2 different ones.  In doing research on them the Evinrude 125 did not seem to be well liked and they were looking for a viable alternative to it.
