I may be wrong but this motor may be a real early one,the same as mine, originally a 600hr engine that can be upgraded to 1200?the crankcase appears to be the magnesium alloy(a lot darker than the later, and arguably the better casing?)also the gearbox may need a mod to a bushing?
if it was local I would be grabbing it

Is there anything on the A220/A240 that isn't very well done?they have taken a great basic design and made it better.

  4. Dusty added a post in a topic Kitfox header tank low fuel indicator

My kf4 has a low fuel sender fitted in the side of the polytank. It appears to be an optical type,as when the sun gets the right angle the warning light comes on.
I would suggest painting the tank to stop false indications, which happen often enough that I ignore the light ,But passengers are always quick to point it out

My other, other plane is a drifter.
I believe the experience of being "up front" in a drifter is possibly the ultimate flying experience, thanks for posting, this has given me the push I need to finish the refurbishment.

    Hi Ed
Good to good to have a US battleship so close.A bunch of tree hugging do gooders were planning a protest, guess the wind got knocked out of their sails. The cows have been rescued and the stranded tourists are being evacuated,600 so far!                                         The main highway and rail link will be out for months, experts are saying there is more to come and possibly bigger.                       We have a major fault running the length of he country that will generate at least an 8 on the richter!                                                    I guess we just have to move forward (or maybe up down back and forwards)

It was just after midnight when the first one hit,we are still getting aftershocks of 4-5 on the Richter scale,                                   The tsunami sirens have finally stopped,We are 2nm inland and 10 m above sea level so decided to stay put.                           This quake triggered others in both islands,we aren't called the shaky islands for nothing.

All good here, thanks for your concern,WHAT A RIDE! We are all coming to grips with what has happened
Christchurch got off lightly as all the old dodgy buildings got taken out last time.
It was like being in a small boat in a rough sea for around 2 minutes.

The SPI kits must have got their act together as 25 hrs and all is good, the correct tooling is crazy expensive here.                         The Clip installer and the pin remover/ installer are a must have as I have a parts 582 that was rebuilt without the correct tools and experience, after 15 hours half a top end roller fell out and destroyed the engine .The aircraft landed safely but the owner will never fly behind a 2 stroke again as he now believes they are unsafe which is a unfortunate.

My recommendation would be to have an experienced mechanic to do anything other than minor engine work.                           These engines are very simple but require some specialist knowledge and expensive tools to be done right, the cost of failure isn't worth the risk! I have seen many failures due to "tinkering" and unfortunately the engine gets blamed, the 582 is an amazing and reliable engine .
I am fortunate that our local rotax mechanic has over the years allowed me to to work on mine under his supervision, there are a few tricks and pitfalls,if you can get the same service it will be very rewarding.
Aftermarket parts, myselfe and the local mechanic preferr them based on value for money.                                                               We recently installed a SPI?top end kit in my 582, it cost less than 1 bare genuine rotax piston(I had to purchase the rotax careless bearings)the quality was impressive and i have gained a noticeable increase in power.

Someone out there must have tried the rubber donut stack?
This setup should work well as is it won't bottom out and would be significantly lighter than the die springs.
My springs are starting to sag and there is a possibility they May bottom out,so I am looking for options.
A member on this site? Appears to be using this setup.
    Maybe worth starting another thread?

  18. Dusty added a post in a topic Rotary valve oil overflow

I haven't seen the rotary valve level change to any noticeable amount in my upright installation, there is very little oil in the rotary valve circuit, oil doesn't expand much but air does!
1/2 an inch variation would have me worried
    double check for air lock

You may not smell any fuel residue in the Rv tank as the heat would possibly percolate it out.
what colour oil are you using for your engine?
use a different colour in your Rv system,if the colour starts to  change in the Rv to the colour in the fuel its bad news followed by a crank rebuild.

  21. Dusty added a post in a topic Rotax 912 Oil Cooler

Installing an oil cooler is a good idea, the 80hp may be ok without one on cool days but a hot day will get you into the red!           My cooler is usually 90%covered but a hot day or beach flying needs 50% exposed or the temps get up a bit,it is good to have an option.A little bit cool would be a preference to too hot.
my reservoir is above the engine on a round cowl setup,no problems

  22. Dusty added a post in a topic 670 Rotax Needs rebuild SOLD, SOLD,SOLD

Check the Pto end of the crankcase, some 670's just need machining and drilling to fit the "c" or"e" box,the later 670's were cast differently and aren't practical to use.
The crank rebuild is practical and affordable (rebuild kits are available ) have a talk to Rotax Rick,
These are an awesome motor with a better power to weight than an 80hp 912! but long term reliability has yet to be proven.
