lol ED I was there in 1977 spent some time at landstuhl general getting bolted back together :)

I was mostly halfway between Nuremberg and Stuttgart - lots of traveling tho as courier - been all over Europe - Had fun sometimes - don't ever want to go back as a GI....You know that! Got our butts chewed royally for chasing a fox in a Bell H-13, and topped a hill and scared hell out of a farmers chickens - cost a lot of Uncles money for all the eggs he said he didn't get - typical BS!

Thats cool! It looks like your rad is quite a ways back. I have a dave johnson reduction on my soob and the rad is in front of the main gear. Had to add 20+ pounds to the tail to get it in cg. My empty weight is 726. I need 500 feet to get off the ground with full fuel. What is your empty weight? I'm wondering if moving the rad back would be worth the effort. Thanks

I've got a Dave Johnson 81, smooth cowl - was hoping to get the rad up front, but considering what you said, with my nose gear and heavy heater, it may not be possible even with the 4 inch Leading edge extension - hoping to come in below 800 EW with Grove KF7 gear, but I am not landing on sandbars down here.

Yes it's an early 65 car. Some call them a 64.5 as there are lots of subtle differences between it and a 65. It's my wife's toy. It currently has a tired 302 in it. I am dropping a dressed Ford Racing 306 crate motor in this winter. 340HP and 350 ft/lbs. Nothing too insane as she drives it most of the time but should be plenty of power to make it an even funner cruiser.

    Kool Joey,

I had a 65 2+2 Red fastback - but coolest Tang I ever saw was my fellow worker's: a bronze,(57 Chevy color), 65 convertible with the rear fenders extended back to match the bumper of the Continlental Kit, if you can imagen that - wish my photo hadn't burned up.

its totally home built,..it's 48" wide at shoulders,,set up for equalized rudder,,stratched compared to a kitfox or avid..can get better measurements tomorrow,..it has no control tabs,,or wing connect points ..so some welding would be needed to finish,..the cross bars behind the seat needs to be put in too,..

price? what you see in the photo minus main gear tail wheel and seats,,come and get it :) I will help you load it:)

You guys are KILLIN' me! :drool3:   I didn't mean to hijack 843SG's thread, but your input is greatly appreciated and many others may benefit from it.

Randy and I will hopefully get a chance to meet up right here in Oregon in the next few weeks to chat Fat Avid and putz around WAAAM.  Maybe our Pusher will be flying by then.

Skypirate's fuselage... I found his post, looks cool, need more info!  Is a fat avid defined mostly by the fuselage, and everything else is more or less interchangeable?  DHolly mentioned several times that gross is still determined by the wings, but if equipped with HH wings a fat avid could do some serious lifting -- I forget how much.

The aerobat is the speed wing that I think was built to the HH specs (spars and rib spacing).  There is a video of the MK IV on the net where the guy is flying inverted, 4 point rolls etc.

my guess is that the rotary valve plate is either not installed correctly, or the brass gear on the rotary valve shaft is fried due to no oil in the RV oil tank.  Does the engine have 2 plugs or 4 plugs in it?

If you could post some pictures it would help us out.

    I have an old Rotax 582 s/n 3971243, that's about a 1990 build and off a snowmobile - I suspect that makes it a 583 engine?.

Purchased on ebay supposedly in good running order.

I am a design engineer, and the last plane I flew was a Tiger Moth in 1949!

I have designed and built a novel form of rotocraft  and the Rotax is the intended power plant for initial static tests only, which I am now ready for.

My problem is that the engine refuses to start. Dribble some gas down the plug holes produces a second or 2 of firing. Likewise squirt some gas up the carbs get it firing for a few seconds.

I'm not an expert on most things including 2 stroke engines, so engaged a mechanic who is an expert on motorbike engines.

He checks everything that I have checked - spark, fuel, timing, but still will not run.

Get some advice from a motorbike fanatic who still races bikes at the age of 80, and he suggests the crankshaft seals may be shot.

So take a deep breath, drink a few beers, sober up and decide to strip down the engine to check seals.

Engine all looks OK inside and engine looks to have had low hours.

So start looking for ideas from the forum sites which leads me here!

There is minor wear on the piston just below the only ring, which looks OK,  Other than a visual inspection I do not know of any way of checking the seals?

In any case even if the seals were leaking I would have thought the engine would still fire, but run roughly?

I new set of pistons, rings, seals, gaskets will set me back $450.

This old engine appears not to have any adjustment on the timing as pickup point is fixed and flywheel is keyed to the shaft.

One suggestion is that the rotating plate downstream from the carbs has been mounted back to front?

I would be very grateful for any suggestions on how to get this engine running?

    Regards,

    Jack.

What is an AEROBAT? Is this a short-wing Avid stressed for aerobatics?

I am sending the flight maneuver manual to Trackwelder to post.

    Hi all,

I was curious if there were any more thoughts about fitting big bros in an Avid.  I'm in much the same situation, budget and height are at odds with each other.  I'm 6'3" and was urged to consider a fat avid.  A late model Kitfox is just out of the question right now.  843SG, did you get any numbers on fat avids or the "Airdale"?  I'm trying to contact Airdale directly, haven't heard back yet.

I'm pretty new to this forum, hats off to the guys who got this thing going it's pretty sweet!

    Mark,

Skypirate just told me that he has a fat-avid fuselage for sale.

You can always extend the skylight and move the bars up a notch, like a couple have done on here. I actually moved my wings up 6 inches, but that was radical.

    Mark,

I have flown with Randy, everything he is describing about his airplane is true. I had the pleasure of flying with Randy up the Knick glacier this past summer. His airplane is awesome. Smooth running, nice flying and great on the gravel bars. The extra room sure is nice. My Bandit works great for what I need, hour flights on nice evenings. Great to solo in, but I still can carry a passenger if I would like. If you are flying cross country or back country, Randy's is the way to go.

Hey Ed, do you need a spare fat fuselage?

The price is right if you want it :) minus main wheels and tail wheel oh and the seats, sorry about the inverted photo, i dont know why but my phone does that for some reason.

*Edit... I edited the post to flip the picture for ya.

A few years ago and $$$ ago, I would have jumped at the chance - Got too much time and $ invested in mine - still got the Kitfox 1 fuselage which could be modified - or not. Thanks for the offer anyway - nice seats - look like my Cabellas.

Getting too old - this plane will be my last build - I hope!

To show my age - the new generation comes in showing me their "pocket internets" (phones), and I show them mine and tell them that it only makes phone calls - and no dang texting! And then I start about the kerosene lamps, battery radios, outhouses, driving mules, and they find somewhere else to go!

either one, they are both the same stuff, just one is in a 4 oz bottle the other is 16 oz bottle.  I took all the brass bushings out of the tank, and put the hose barbs into the brass bushings using the sealer, then screwed the assembly into the tank.  Be careful threading them into the tank as the plastic threads will pull pretty easy.  With the gasket sealer on the threads it does not need to go into the tank much more than hand tight, just good and snug.  Let it set over night before you put the gas to it.  The sealer will thicken and stifffen up quite a bit, but it wont harden all the way.
