Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year back at ya!

While being funny as hell, it is also sad that the above is true.  I think most who know me know where I stand.

Merry Christmas everyone.  If ya don't like it I will pitch in for a plane ticket to your sand box of choice..

I just noticed your thread creep and I enjoyed the video.

I ride a KTM 2 stroke and technical single track with water crossings is the kind of riding I go out of my way for.

I just came to the realization that my dirt bike and Kitfox have similarities.

I am considering 4 strokes for my next dirt bike and airplane engine.

Both have been modified with centrifugal clutches.

    Neither have ever failed me.

The main reason I want those taking a BFR as Sport Pilots to take the same BFR  I take is that I share the dad gum SKY with them.  Either they know the rules or they don't.  Working the controls around is fine as far as it goes but the biggest problem I have with other pilots is around the pattern.  Non standard approaches for instance.  There are many other for instances.

Do you know the rules for special VFR into a non-towered airport? That seems far fetched I know but think about it.  You're not suppose to be there granted but you are there now.  It's one of those red ones with the keyhole around it and you've been out having a blast all day and you get home only to find you have low fuel, low vis and a broken layer.  What are you gonna do? Park it?  No.  Learn the rules and act like you know what you are doing.

It's worth reviewing at BFR time.

    just sayin'

Another leak stopper?  One of our members cut a hole in his tank and used Hysol 9430 to coat the inside where he had a leak.

If I have a pinhole leak, I am going to try drilling thru with about an 1/8" drill, and using the deburring tool to champher the inside and outside of the tank, then inject 9430 or 9460 into the hole so there is enough to spread itself on the inside - after smoothing the outside, I will put some tape over it to keep it in place until cured.  Hoping that this will work.

    Comments welcome.

Leni - I know exactly what you mean about Budweiser headaches - I had them every time I tried Bud or Michelob - for some reason I don't get them with Bud Lite (4 can limit daily).  I drank Millers for years, but inherited a new bro-in-law with last marriage, and he works for Bud and brings free Bud Lite to me - so now I just go with the flow.

I agree - headaches are not worth drinking for - to each his own.

    Merry Christmas.

P.S.  I sold my Miller stocks when they went to South Africa.

Eye By Humerican!   But its even better when I get it free!

Ed, I am with ya except for the Bud lite... damn near any other beer or alcohol than that   well.. Budweiser in general I guess.  One bud and in 30 minutes I will have a head ache that brings me to my knees.  Any other beer or adult beverage and I dont have the headache till the next day when consumed in increments of 24 or more

I found all the newsletters on CD recently. This thread will be a collection of them. If you didn't spend enough time here before this will surely keep you busy. I haven't looked through all of these yet myself but I'm sure there is valuable Avid history and tech info contained within. If you are really interested in these and your internet connection makes looking at these attachments too painful let me know. I'd be willing to burn the CD's and mail you a set.

Man, you're right on time!    After 20 years of running gas through my old fiberglass tank it started leaking about a month ago.  I've been researching everything there is to find about fixing and replacing and was just about to start to cut my tank open when I came across this post.  Needless to say, I'm very interested.  If you're going to put price and pictures on here that's fine.  If not, I'll email you.

    Just let me know.  thanks

    Jim

hey Jim, send me an email. also you might want to look at the posting here

Here is another Issue, "my tank is leaking and what should i do?

If you have a leak greater then a pinhole you might want to consider repalcing the tank.

    if you have a pinhole somewhere, this is typically from air bubbles in the resin and from the manufacturing process, then;

    A. Sand the area about 3/4" around the hole (using a 36 grit sanding disc) and slightly in the pin hole, BTW us extreme caution not to go to deep,

    B. Clean the are with acetone,

    C. Finally use Hysol E-50CR  with some glass to repair.

Ok all I thought I would start a post regarding issues with older “pre 2004†wing tanks. I say pre 2004 because after a few years of testing I began manufacturing tanks for a few companies.

Here is a Fix that some have tried. "SLOSHING"

I have many issues with "Sloshing" a tank sealant in any fiberglass tank.

#1. If the tanks are in the wings already you have to rotate, flip the entire wing just too hopefully etch it. This is no good in my book because you will never get the whole tank covered with the etching material or sealant.

#2. The manufactures of tank sealants do not know what types of resins the tanks are made of and it’s pretty much an educated guess on their part if their materials will truly work.

#3. If the tank being sealed is not "abraded" I.E. sanded at least with 80grit for the sealant, 9 times out of 10 it will not adhere to the surfaces. If things are not perfect the materials typically peel off within a period of time. I have witnessed this more than once. You cannot use screws, bolts, nails of any other thing to try and abrade the tank surface other than by hand sanding every area.

My final thought on tank sealants, Bad Idea.

I think that has been done in a one-seater for the Private test - Just don't work for BFR.  Although, I have heard of a CFI who was too large to fit in the back seat of a J3, but the guy taking the BFR was current and could be PIC, and he did all the maneuvers and made 3 landings while the CFI watched from the ground.  The pilot had thousands of hours in taildraggers, and the plane was legal with dual controls.

Sometimes a little common sense is good - too bad the govmt don't have much of it!

    Thanks,

    ED

I tried the Statins twice - two different ones - both times I felt like I had the flu and had an elephant walk on me - I refused the third brand.  I'm in the 200 total area, but had my carotids checked and only had 6% and 12% blockage at age 72.  The docs don't even recognize the blockage until it is above 49%.

My 120 lb wife had her carotid checked and it was 87% blockage on one side, and she got a cleanout done.  She had been on Statins for a few years, but felt they did no good - she got off Statins and her cholesterol has not changed one bit - but she feels better.

I watch the ads on TV for all the old-age ailments I have, and the side effects are far worse than the pains I am having.

I am a firm believer in good diet, Bud Lite, and minimum pills.

Chase is referring to the original flight test, issuing of the LS certificate to the student pilot.

I saw his happen with a friend. The FAA examiner refused to fly with him in the Quicksilver two-seat plane, but chose to do the test via radio from the ground.

  15. EDMO

    Chase,

The rules from AOPA which quote the FAA, says that you cannot take the BFR in a single seat plane it has to be in a plane with dual controls.  Don't know what TEST you are talking about.  It also says a Sport Pilot must take the BFR in a LSA, but evidently some CFIs get around that because you cannot be PIC without a medical, no matter what ticket you have, unless you have a current BFR.

if a person is going for sport pilot ,..but gets a standard private pilot student/physical card,..he can take his flight test in a 172/152/etc if he goes to the FSDO or an  IA to acquire his Sport Pilot student ticket ( Sport Student Certificates are free and good for 5 years) he can not take his flight test in a 152/172 etc it has to be a ELSA or with exception LSA,..for the flight test the instructor has the option to remain on the ground with radio contact with student ( a must for single seat LSA) or he can ride along if he chooses in a 2 seat LSA

I have one of them old fashioned circulating 200,000 BTU wood furnaces ,..it eats a cord of wood every 2 to 3 weeks,..it has 4 cold air returns connected to the circulation fan that's mounted in the plenum ,..heating a 3 floor 10,000 square foot house and we have to crack the windows  on the top floor or it will drive you out unless the temp is at zero f even with the thermostat set at 70,..summertime is nice though,..1/2 ton AC unit cools the house nicely even in 100F degree heat  I have 8" walls with R30 throughout :)

Trane is a great unit (made in Wisconsin :BC: ).  Sorry you have to make the choice, though-- but you got to keep the family warm.

I had to put new burners in my furnace this year.  It's only 7 years old.  Furnaces are not meant to last like in the good old days.  A 25+ year furnace is not possible any more.  Life span is realistically 7-12 years.
