I am going to give it a try this year if the weather will cooperate; it's beautiful at the moment and supposed to last for a while but that means this comming weekend looks good.  Another good period the following weekend might be too much to hope for but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Do you live in Valdeze?  I have never been there yet, even by road, so really looking forward to it.

Here is a photo of a Dave Johnson redrive conversion EA-81, like mine.

I don't like the black paint, and will change that to something light colored before installing it.  Better to see leaks and other stuff when inside the cowl.

Note:   My engine mount is different - it attaches to engine and to redrive.

WTF - I deleted the last post and it shows up - put photo here and it is gone!  Guess I am doing good to even get on here?  And, now the photo is back?????

Here is NOT a photo of a Dave Johnson redrive conversion EA-81, like mine.

Well, screwed this one up - see the next post.

Why cant I delete my own post?

    Doug,

There are formulas available for calculating the change in torque values when a crows foot or box wrench extension is used.

I don't know where mine are right now, but you should be able to find the conversion charts.

I am with Leni - If I had one of these engines, I would think seriously about running 2 facet or other electric pumps instead of paying the outrageous prices they want.

Can you just make a block off plate and run an electric pump?  The prices of these things are stupid when you can run and electric pump for about 20 bucks.  hell even put 2 in there so you have a back up.

I'm not a 912 driver so I don't know if you can put a block off plate on it like you would a chevy V8, but from the picture it looks like it will operate the same basic way.

Unfortunately, the King spends $1000 for every $1 you pay in!   How long and how much will it take to pay off $17+TRILLION?

My biggest question is:  WHO got all that money?  I haven't seen where even $1 Trillion bought anything!

Even his $100 Million golfing weekends don't add up to that much!

And, he has the nerve to cut the pensions of the retired military that he never served in!

Sorry, guess I corrupted the Valdez post - Hope they have a good time there and post photos.

nice vid.  Good decision.  Too many times in the past I let the get there itis take all options away but forging ahead and sucking the seat up my ass.  I like tree top flying, but not when its my only option

Okay, sorry to keep posting all these questions, but I've searched and haven't found all the information I was hoping to find .

My seat truss (MK4) has a 5/8" x .035" wall tube across the top, and all other tubes are 1/2" x .035 wall. Someone added .040" gussets in the triangular areas, but the welds are pretty rough, they actually burned through the tubing in at least one place. I'd like to replace the whole seat truss.

I'd also like to go with a wider gear like the WIB gear (tail dragger flying will be new for me). Does anyone have pictures or information on what type of seat truss upgrades they have done to use the WIB gear? I've done some basic truss calculations, but just want a little reality check before committing to a design. I'm also trying to minimize weight, so I don't want to overbuild this. I've been waiting to order tubing until I can nail this down, but I'm getting impatient to get this gear situation knocked out.

    Thanks

    Luke D.

hit the "more reply options" button when making the post and it should pop up with an "add attachment" button.  you can then click that then select the picture you want to upload to the site.

Let me know if it still does not work for you.

Ron I am using a Drift 1080HD. Cheaper than a Go Pro and I like the small IR remote that works great. No messing with your phone and running down the battery of your possible lifeline. I also like being able to use the screen on the side to preview the exact shot I want to get before taking off.

yes and it became a problem for me when I really exercised the system at low tire pressures. I did not damage the tires, but I could see evidence of rubbing. I ended up using spacers to get the clearance because my landing gear was notched to carry the brake line. Your gear looks like it will work fine moving the caliper up and forward and running the brake lines down the front tube of the gear. On my Cleveland brakes, the back plate could be easily rotated to put the calipers in the better spot, but the brake tube slot in the gear did not align at all well.

I think that SuberAvid may have had some bad experience with that dual setup - or someone I have talked to.

My Soob had 75 hours on it when I bought it.   The owner said he set his 72" warp drive at about 11 degrees, and to try for 4200 static, or 4400 on floats - he said it should unload at 4800, and not to exceed 5000 if I wanted it to last.

I don't know if mine was modified, except that the heads were milled .040, raising compression to 9.1.

He had it on a Pelican with floats, and it was too heavy, so he bought a used 912.

I didn't get the prop, and am still building my plane.

I have some papers on the points setting ( yours is a reluctor) and I think the dwell and advance settings.

Also got the assembly instructions for the redrive and where to buy belts.

If you need any info, I will look for it.

I also have a VHS video of Dave Johnson with a couple of engines he built.

Are you modifying your Soob?  How?

If I ever tear mine down, I will send the cam and lifters to Stratus or someone, if it has not been reground.

I do have the Dave Johnson redrive. He didn't personally build this engine as I know the fellow who had the plane 0 timed it with the help of a local "professional". Pretty sure though that Mr. Johnson certainly masterminded much of what was done. I'll take some pics when I get near the plane and post for your perusal. I am currently using a 3 blade warp drive cut back to 68 inches from 70. Warp drive told me to set the prop to 8.5 degrees. I have yet to try this. I am slowly getting it together to build the 100 horse version but you know how it is. Time is precious. Sounds like you're not a fan of the "home made" diy dual ignition. I was going to follow the plans posted by Paul messenger(hope I got that right) about ea81 dual pickup distributer conversion. I was able to buy a dizzy already set up from a ch601.

I had tire/caliper clearance issues with the 29 ABW's When running low pressure in the tires. If you can mount the calipers up/forward it will provide better tire clearance to calipers than mounting them down/back. With calipers up/forward clearance is maintained regardless of tire pressure.

    Did that make sense?
