Avid Flyers had a kindof simple header tank.  It's an aluminum tube 2"  0r 2 1/2" diameter and about 18" long.  Capped off top and bottom, two fittings on the top (one fuel inlet, one vent line)  one fitting about 4" up from the bottom on the side (fuel out) and one fitting on the bottom for a drain.  Because the fuel goes out on the side, the tank acts as a filter and gascolator as well.  It would be a lot easier to build than the kitfox style tank.  If you want, I can get a picture for you to look at.  Jim Chuk

    Jim,

I've done a lot of fiberglas work - I wouldn't use a light tube - had too much fg stick to mold - a thin electrical conduit or PVC pipe would be safer to use. Wouldn't want glass particles stuck to fg..Put 3 times as much wax on the mold as you think you need.

There used to be fg tubes you could buy - forget where...

Funny you should mention an aluminum tube, that's what I'm thinking about for a conduit for my battery cables and any other wires going back to the tail area. I'm trying to remember what I told TJay about if it falls to the floor if you let go of a not absolutely essential part, don't put it in..... Right now I'm thinking about taking an 8' long florescent light bulb, and wrapping it with a layer of fiberglass, then slitting the fiberglass after it hardens up to get it off the tube, then patching the cut. Hard to get much lighter than that with what I have on hand..... This is going to be a long project, and it will still end up too heavy! Some times I let my mind wander way to far without adult supervision. Jim Chuk

    Thanx for the photos Jim,

I was wondering about clamping an aluminum tube inside the fuselage and running my cable thru that - My elevator / HS set a lot lower than your Avid. Running the cable outside of the elevator looks like the easiest too for replacement.

I thought drag was a good thing - helps you get stopped quicker!

    Hello,

I have my Avid Mk4 Speeedwing with Rotax 912 retrofitted to tailwheel.
I bought a used spring of an old Avid. Now it is not as stable and depends heavily through. Where could I (quickly) get a new one that is a bit steep. Or someone has a hint how I can build a spring itself to me.

    Regards Martin

Put 3 hrs on the hobbs yesterday about 80 miles East of here in the Sierra Foothills. We went to a private strip where Back to the Future 3 was filmed and they fed us. After that we checked out the dismal state of several of our reservoirs. We hit another private strip and then spent some time playing on the delta back over by home. Great day in some perfect weather. Should have taken more pics but here's a few and short video of me shooting the gap where they diverted the water when they built the dam for a reservoir. My 396 terrain screen was having a fit!

Factory Built S-LSA S-7 and Homebuilt S-6 Both 912S powered. Nice airplanes

All natural...spotted this spot flying over and investigated and landed it. I can't put it into words how awesome it is to spot an area from the air and then just go and land on it. Spam can drivers are missing out big time!!

Sounds almost exactly like my flight report! I actually have more up trim authority than I need. I forgot to reset it once for take off and I had a handful of airplane on takeoff! My takeoff setting is 3 bars down on the indicator from the top. One thing I haven't done and probably should is trim it full nose up and see how it flies in case the motor ever runs away. I think if that ever happened I would have to pull on flaps to get the nose back down. Glad your happy with the results. I know it was the best mod I've done to my plane so far.

Hi Ed, I think you wanted to see pictures of how my trim cable was run, so I got a couple for you yesterday. Didn't have the elevator handy, but the cable is outside the fabric on the elevator where it goes to the trim tab. I'm sure there is a bit of drag from that, but it's easy to thread the cable through the holders. Enjoy, Jim Chuk

I flew the Avid with the new elevator for the first time today!  What a difference.  I only flew for about half an hour, but the results were dramatic to say the least.  I have plenty of trim authority for cruise and climb and descent.  I am going to have to get used to not having to haul back on the stick all the time especially on final!  On a bright note I did all the flying without my 15 pound ballast weight on the towbar attach, so that thing has a new home gathering dust on the shelf in my hangar.  I did a few stalls power off and on and noticed that the stalls are sharper and more crisp, which with more pitch authority was expected.  The tail comes alive almost as soon as power is applied on the takeoff roll.  I'll do some more flying later today and explore it a bit more.  But so far I have nothing bad to say about this mod.

    High Country,

Is that how they got the straight bends in them originally?

I just assumed they heated them somehow.

Well, I have a couple of pieces completely clean...it took forever! The Zep didn't do anything but make the house smell like oranges. The thing that worked the best was soap and warm water. That got the brown paper to peel off leaving behind the clear sticky stuff. Goo gone got the sticky stuff re moisturizer and Ronsons lighter fluid then made it release with some thumbnail scrapping! I guess I'll be cleaning one piece a day for a week or so, or until I give up and buy new stuff!

The good thing about the lighter fluid is that you can just light a match when you get sick of messing with the paper!

By the way Maguires Plastic X cleans the polycarbonate up really good! No scratches!

I wish I had a one step fix, but unfortunately just a lot of elbow grease!

That is the nicest baggage compartment I have ever seen, your setting the bar quite high for the rest of us to match, you know that right. :)

Here is an estimate I recieved 8/11/14 for replacement gear Item #1021-3, associated mounting hardware and shipping costs. Be aware, Grove tries to keep a few of the more popular springs in inventory, however, if you call them when the shelves are bare, it will take up to 4-6 weeks depending on their batch heat treating schedule.
