First off, let me correct a mistake. It was acetone, NOT MEK that was the rinsing agent. That was my mistake on my last post.

I don't have any idea what, if any, negative effect this would have on the "old" tanks, sorry.

As to pressure testing, only a very low pressure is needed, 1/2 to 1 psi. Put a balloon over the filler neck and pressurize the tank through the threaded ports. Leave the tank/balloon for a while and measure the balloon for shrinkage to detect a leak. Soapy water spray for finding the leaks...

With the old Avid tanks (new but manufactured prior to 2007) you are suggesting they should still be rinsed with MEK? Will rinsing for 1 min and then dumping and letting them dry not cause permanent damage but still be effective in cleaning out the initial gunk?

How much pressure are you talking about in doing a pressure test?

Forgot to add the rest of the history of that plane as I know it; Gary bought it from a doctor in seattle and trucked it to AK. The Dr. in Seattle bought it from the builder in FL and trucked it to Seattle from FL. Like I said, travelled a lot of miles without ever leaving the ground. As far as I could see the plane looked fine when Gary had it but has sat for a loong time and needs a thourough going through of the systems tbefore flying. Of course it has a great engine in it.....

Jim had a few other "interesting" lives - He worked on the pipeline as a crane op - and had blasting license.
I made Harpoon barrels in my machine shop, as subcontract to him, and we flew to Barrow where I fitted them to the Whaling Captains Harpoons - they didnt speak American, so had to have an interpreter - Learned a lot that trip.
Jim was champion pistol shooter - real dead shot! - good inventer - and certainly makes money and has fun.
I have another story about him and a whale and some dinamite in Barrow - but not now -
I miss beng there with him and Ken and gang.
Wish SuberAvid Randy could have seen the show - we were just talking about the guns under the wings, and they had the same settup on an ATV.
Maybe you should give him a call sometime - his website has the phone number.

Doug-- The topic of what material to rinse with has been debated to death. Av-Gas will not do it. The release agents and uncured resin are resistant to it. MEK or Acetone are required.

My buddy who just finished his hybrid, used brand new wing tanks from Kitfox and rinced with Av-Gas. I persuaded him to rinse again with MEK and he got out a ton more junk from his "clean" tanks.

Additionally, I would highly recommend pressure testing your new tanks. These tanks above also had a flaw in their manufacture which caused a leak that required a bunch of screwing around to fix.

Check this out tonight, WILD WEST ALASKA, ANIMAL PLANET CHANNEL, Sunday at 7 CST, and I'm sure Jim West will introduce you to some big Alaska critters, and your protection to haul in the plane - He was flying a 175 on floats when I worked for him, and had a Lodge at Copper River.

I had rather see them with no sound, unless you want to edit in some clear audio that tells where you are, what we are seeing, how the plane acts, etc. If you dont want to talk, i guess some Bluegrass would be better than chainsaw noises, IMO! I always enjoy a video of flying above different parts of the country.

    Hey Ron -

I had another thought that might be helpful. I know that the wing tanks I received from [old] Airdale with my Avid+ kit had a crap load of excess adhesive and selvage in them, and definitely would have benefited from a good rinsing. Kitfox has a Service Bulletin out on this very issue, with pointers that should work with your (or any new Avid) tanks. If you have any question about the vintage of your tanks, ie. whether they were manufactured with the earlier polyester resin vs. vinylester resin, I would rinse with Avgas vs MEK or Acetone as instructed by Kitfox for tanks made prior to Nov. 2007 (which, I suspect, is the date they switched to more ethanol resistant vinylester resin).

Leni - I just cleared all my cookies again and still get the warning using Fire Fox on my Windows desktop. It appears that StopBadware.org is the Co. putting out the warning. They take attack site info from Google plus two other data providers, so it might not be input from Google that is causing the problem now. I followed the path from the Attack Site! splash page to the Co.'s FAQs and found a link that site owners can use to request a review if they believe their site has been clean, but is still blacklisted and receiving an Attack Site! warning. This might be worth checking out if you have already used the Google Webmasters Tools I linked to in another thread.

I used the handle bar mount that came with the cam for my posted videos.

I now have a suction cup mount coming from B&H Photo. I'm still waiting on a real computer (Apple) so that I can do some editing and publish some more.

Finally got me an Action Cam.. Drift HD and a couple vids
Well I finally got with the times and picked myself up a Drift HD. I went with the Drift over the Go Pro for several reasons. #1 it has an IR remote that works awesome. #2 you can see what your filming on the side of it so it makes adjustments easy. #3 I paid $180 instead of nearly $400 for the Hero 3. I jimmied the mount today with zip ties so it's a bit shakey. I was filming in 720P at 60FPS. When my strut mount shows up this week I hope to get some more stable footage. Here is my first attempt at vids.

Correction on name of show: It is "Wild West Alaska". I saw the ad again last night.

Jim West designed the "Co-Pilot" as a Marlin 336 Takedown model, with the pistol-grip stock, and the big "John Wayne" Lever so you could work the action with heavy gloves on. Corbon made a real hot "bear-killer" cartridge for us and tested the barrels with it. There are many options available for this gun.
I made the prototype of the "Ghost-ring" rear sight for them, and there are internal action improvements too.
Mine is a little different - It is the G-model with a ported barrel, and satin stainless plating. I sent the stock model to Fagen in Missouri and they made the Green-Brown Laminated stock blank for me.

I think the hole goes up but it really does not matter too much. Leave the radiator cap off when you start it and you should be able to see the water flowing in the radiators. Make sure that the over flow bottle is at the minimum line so it wont suck air back into the system as it cools off.

    Hi Dale,

I posted some information and pictures on the flaperon cable setup on the topic Chris started "I just bought a Fat Avid" or something like that in th Fat Avid/Avid+ section. I think the post was around 3 January. The cables have to cross twice.

    Ed,

Sounds like a neat show; I would love to watch it but don't have cable and don't watch the alphabet channels; I just got fed up with them. I may get to see it when it comes out on a DVD.

Although I don't own a 45-70 I do really like the cartridge. I had a H.S. teacher who was really into them and had about a dozen different guns in 45-70. In the Marlin and the Ruger you can really load them up. I keep eyeing the Marlin stainless with the laminated stock; a takedown of that would be very nice for the airplane gun.

Interesting; I just talked to Mark a few weeks ago. That plane spent about 2 years in my hangar when it was on Aerocet amphib floats. It needed a little work to get it flying since it had not flown for a few years before that. I taxied it around the airport but I never flew it; the way it handled with those floats on the pavement made me not excited about trying to land it on pavement and I don't have a float rating. Then about 2 years ago Gary sold it about to a guy in Valdeze who was all excited to get it flying. Mark just bought it from him but without the floats. He had plans to get it flyable by spring but must have changed his mind. That plane has done a lot of traveling without leaving the ground.
