I am still a little confused about what to expect when I finally get the DAR to do my inspection. It has been said several times on this forum that "experimental" means I can do what I want to. What is the DAR going to look for then other than the correct markings, ie 2" experimental, passenger notice, 3" n numbers, data plate on tail, etc.

The rings are 50 cents a piece. I put one out in the tip and another by the strut attach points. I went through 3 conditional inspections with an A&P I was paying with the fabric still on them and he didn't say anything. I opened them up this year and used a mirror on a stick and an LED flashlight to look around. What do you know it looked exactly the same as when I covered the wings

    Hi Willis!
Nice to hear from you! The doors on this plane are lexan window and metal bottom. I plan to replace the metal with plastic like I did on my two other Avids. There's just too much visibility lost with the metal door bottoms. i don't think you can do it in one piece. I've always done the bottom and a second piece for the top which overlays the bottom just like if it was made of metal. Matter of fact, I've just taken the metal bottoms off and copied them out of plastic and put it back together.

On four different Avids I've owned, the reinforcement rings were installed, but the center fabric wasn't cut out. I doubt that they are required, it's an experimental airplane, and you can kindof do whatever you want. If you ever have a mouse build a nest in the wing and you want a way to get all the seeds and stuff they carted into the wing out, the inspection holes will come in handy. Cut out the center fabric, and put an aluminum cover over it. Actually if you have a few of them and paint them with the rest of the aluminum parts, they will match if you ever have to use them. I actually put in a few extra rings so if I ever had to change the pitot hose, I could. Little bit of extra work now could save a lot later. Take care, Jim Chuk

    Wing inspection plates
Do you know if wing inspection holes are required on an AVID Flyer to get the certificate of airworthiness?

Yes, evrything is Avid. I question the method in the book.... I would have threaded the axle nut all the way to the wheel without a spacer. That way, I could cotter pin the axle nut, and put the skis on or off without regard to it. What am I missing?

It is a bit confusing, maybe I should change the names... When you click on the Avidfoxflyers Forums link it will bring up all the sub catagories. The first one you are likely to see if going to be the Avidfoxflyers General Hangar.... this was meant to be the general BS hangout for those who want to bs back and forth.. then you keep scrolling and you will hit the Avid Flyer general hangar... it is here that generic avid questions were meant to be kicked about. If you scroll more you will get the sub forums with the various avid models.

I hope its a little bit clearer than Mississippi mud

    Landing gear axle assy.
I am just installing my bush gear - change from the Grove. The directions for the axle somewhat baffles me. I am using skis, so I will tap the required thread in the sides of the axle. The directions show that the wheel will go on, foloowed by a spacer of sufficent length then the axle nut, which will tighten against the spacer and be on the outter most part lf the axle. This being the case, then the ski attach bolt will interfere with the wheel nut cotter pin. Why not thread the axle to the wheel, which would eliminate the outer spacer, and allow a cotter pin which would not interefere with the ski attach bolt?

    Thanks,
    larry

    Hi Chris,

Nice to here you join the fat guys, it's Willis here the guy you ship the kitfox cowl to modify for my fat avid, been slowly plugging away on it with with a bit of luck should be flying it this winter I hope , just getting to the cables and it looks like I will have to build the same attachment as Randy did on mine to lower them down to connect to the flapper on horns.
I finally got back on the site on my iPad , the PC won't let me get on this site for some reason. . I don't want to hijack your thread but could you tell me if you have the full lexan doors if there done in two pieces, I don't see how it would form nicely in one piece even if you can heat it.

    Thanks

I did the entire bucket timing series of test because I was paranoid about it! I wasn't paranoid after finishing the tests!

The magnum gross weight is 1750 lbs and the cabin (44") is about 4" wider than the original avid flyer.
I'm thinking it might be a custom job, but I need to look at the Avid+ specs too.
I have the original bungee on it now.

    Thanks,

No worries...I just wanted to spend an insane amount of money on a project that will never be worth what I spent!
I'm sure someone else will be glad to help me out in my absurd business venture!

I'll try a couple more times.

    Thanks,

I don't know of others, but I'm not on the "inside" with Kitfox. Dave wouldn't have replaced them anyway, they were already installed in a wing and flying. Repair is holding and plane is still flying.

Guys, I've tried. I really tried. I don't know what's going on with Brett.

He told me he's had some (unspecified) medical problems and there is some medical problems (terminal?) with his family that has occupied a lot, a really lot, of his time.

That being said, he has refused my, and several other people's help in answering phone calls and emails. I don't think he gets much help on the "home front" if you know what I mean. That makes running a one man business even harder than normal.

I don't know what to say. Maybe he's getting burnt out from the stress? He's a friend, but ... ??

All I can say is, "I'm Sorry."

Were those the only bad ones to your knowledge or was whole a run of tanks affected? Kind of surprised KF wouldn't replace them if defective?

I agree Chris - no need to mess-up what we know that works.
Also, IMO, the FARs are the rules that help keep us safe, no matter what type we fly, just like rules of the roads,
and the FARs/AC43-13, gives minimum fuel flow for all piston engines, as 150% of Max full-power consumption for gravity systems, and 125% for pumped fuel systems - and some of this determines our line sizes too.
They even tell us how to do the test for this at maximum angles of attack, using a bucket and a timer. Nothing is too small to overlook when you want the fan to keep turning.

What is the "gross" on a Magnum? I would think quite a bit more than the standard LSA Avid/Kitfox. Wider, too?

It could probably be made heavy enough, but it would need to be custom.

These were brand new tanks from Kitfox, ordered about two years ago. the flaw was a small crescent shaped area on the inside wall in front of the sight view tube. Repaired with a fuel (ethanol) proof two part epoxy.

All of my comments above are in reference to these tanks.

Haven't seen one yet. How does the gear on the Magnum compare to an Avid? I would think it's a bit more heavy duty for the extra weight but I'm just guessing.

Chris just look at the little path that's located right underneath the pic of the Black and Red wing. It tells you the path. Your thread is here.
